Pastor’s Weekly Message
Word of Life
P. 2
15th Sunday of the Year B, July 15, 2018
The second reading from St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians tells
us how blessed we are in Christ because we were chosen from
the beginning. Therefore, our existence and our faith are not
based on chance or accidental circumstances but on the
deliberate choice of God. Our coming to church this morning is
really a response to God’s choice of us. He is the one who chose
us first and that choice was not based on our intelligence or
extraordinary gifts but rather on His love for us. “In love He
destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ…”
(Ephesians 1: 5).
God continues to choose ordinary people to accomplish His
mission. That was the story of the prophet Amos in the first
reading who was called from his ordinary workplace of being a
shepherd and a dresser of sycamore to be God’s mouthpiece. In
the gospel, Jesus summoned the Twelve (ordinary fishermen,
tax collectors, and lawyers) and sent them out to preach the
news of the Kingdom of God. Their authority to preach was not
based on their own knowledge or wisdom but rather on the
command and love of God who entrusted them with the
mission. They have experienced Jesus and now it is time for
them to share those experiences with others.
Jesus gives us some principles of how to do missionary work in
the gospel today. He sent out the disciples in pairs to stress the
importance of community. Christians are called to walk with
one another and support one another on the journey of faith. No
one can go the road alone. Since every Christian is called to be a
missionary, we must take a cue from today’s gospel. Jesus told
the disciples not to carry food, sack, or money. They were to
depend totally on God and the generosity of those to whom they
were sent. The essential things we need to carry with us all the
time are: our conviction of the saving power of God and the
support of the community. We must note that the truth of God’s
message does not depend on its acceptability or its popularity.
There are things that may be popular and acceptable but are not
God’s message of Truth. Jesus told His disciples not to
compromise the message He gave to them. If people listen to the
message and do what they were supposed to do, that is fine. If
they do not heed the words, the disciples should move on and
preach it to others who are willing to listen.
Jesus shared his work with his disciples and today, he is sharing
the same work with us. He has chosen us and blessed us, so we
are to respond by going out to be his hands and feet to our
world. We do not have to have all the theological degrees before
we function in the church. The church needs willing and warm
hearts to carry out her many ministries. If we know the master
who sends us, and we are convinced of the message of
repentance, then we are ready to go. Knowing that he chose us
first, we are not afraid to choose him in return. May our faith be
strengthened, and our hearts be large enough to give of our time
and resources for the spread of the gospel.
Feast of St. Mary Magdalene: Next Sunday, July 22nd is the
feast day of our patron, St. Mary Magdalene. Since this feast
falls on Sunday this year, we have obtained the permission from
Cardinal DiNardo to elevate the feast to a Solemnity in our
parish thereby replacing the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time for
our parish. The readings for next Sunday will be proper for the
feast of St. Mary Magdalene. This is such a blessing for our
parish to have the opportunity to celebrate our patron as a
community. Two years ago, Pope Francis elevated the
celebration of our patron from an obligatory memorial to a feast.
In his letter affirming this decision, he described St. Mary
Magdalene as the apostle to the apostles. There will be a
reception after each Mass next week for our feast day. We are
glad that our parish choir will be singing at 11AM for this
special feast also.
Reception for Fr. Tony next week: As you already know, Fr .
Tony will be leaving our parish to go to Holy Family parish in
Las Vegas, diocese of Las Vegas, Nevada in the next two
weeks. His official assignment begins there on July 28th.
Therefore, next Sunday is going to be his weekend as our
associate pastor. We will combine his farewell reception with
the parish Feast day reception after all Masses next week in the
Family Life Center. He will most certainly love your kind
words, prayers, and gifts as he goes to Las Vegas for pastoral
ministry. We will miss his warmth and his cheerful heart, but
we trust that God will be his guide as he leaves us. Fr. Tony will
certainly be back to visit us soon. He will still be leading the
pilgrimage to the Holy Land and Rome in November as
scheduled.
Archdiocesan Youth Conference: Our high school-age youth
are geared up for the annual 3-day archdiocesan conference that
will be held from Friday July 20th to Sunday, July 22nd at the
Hilton Americas Hotel. The mission of this conference is to
deepen their Catholic faith by fostering a closer relationship
with Jesus Christ. It engages the teens through prayer, music,
the Word, evangelization and catechesis, sacraments,
community life, and service. In this way teens can deepen their
understanding and commitment to faithfully live the mission of
Jesus Christ for others. Let us pray for our parish youth who
will be attending and others from different parishes in the
archdiocese that God will enrich them through the conference.
Fr. Felix Osasona ([email protected])
Gracious Father, I thank you for the mercy you have shown in forgiving my sins and for the peace that comes from being reconciling with you and with your church.

The peace and joy of the Gospel be with you! As Pope Francis likes to remind us, the Good News of the Gospel is one of joy, the joy of knowing that we are all in the embrace of a God who knows us inti-
mately, loves us fiercely with a love beyond all telling, and has invited us to share life with him in eternal glory. Even when we fail, he never abandons us but is there to put us back together again with his for-giveness, love and mercy.
We are asking for your generosity and prayers to continue to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. Your support will help the Basilian Fathers make others more aware of this great invitation to a live of joy and purpose. Please be generous and help us. God is never outdone in generosity and will surely bless your efforts. Please know that you are always in our prayers as you partner with us in spreading the Gospel. FESTIVAL OF MINISTRIES. . .
COMING SEPTEMBER 8 & 9!
Our Parish Stewardship Committee plans and presents the
Annual Renewal & Commitment Event – “Festival of Ministries”.
The event includes a series of focuses on Stewardship education
and celebration of ministries in the Parish.
Time, Talent and Treasure are discussed and commitments are
requested.
Why a Festival of Ministries?
Because the focus and center of our parish life is the Eucharist—where we are nourished at the table of the Lord and sent forth to fulfill God’s will in our lives.
Because Christian Stewards fulfill God’s will by responding to God’s call to share with others and return to the Lord with increase.
Because God’s stewards are called to be accountable, but
it’s more than that – it’s also being accountable for our brothers and sisters. We are called to witness our faith, to make a difference in people’s lives and to help others discover their
gifts for service.
Because the Festival of Ministries gives everyone the opportunity to fulfill their call to imitate Jesus by sharing their time, talents and treasure.
The Festival will be held after all Masses that week-end in

2018 AYC:
Next weekend, our 13 youth and 3 chaperones will be
joining 2,500 high school youth and youth leaders from
across the archdiocese for the Archdiocesan Youth
Conference (AYC). Please keep praying for everyone in-
volved with this amazing event! AYC will be held July 20th
- 22nd at the Hilton Americas Hotel in downtown Houston.
It is an opportunity for our youth to grow their faith
through fun and fellowship. May God speak into the hearts
and lives of the Young Church.
AYC Fundraisers:
Thanks to your generosity, we were able to raise over
$1,100 for our high school Youth Ministry during the Jesus
Mosaics fundraiser! These funds will help to offset
expenses for AYC {see above}. Many of you expressed an
interest in these beautiful pieces of religious art… we will be
back for another fundraiser in November, ahead of the
Christmas season. As always, you can go to the website to
review the amazing artwork: www.jesusmosaics.com !
Looking ahead for School-Year Catechists: July may seem like a funny time to be thinking about school, but CCE never really stops… and we have already started planning for the school-year CCE program (Sept. - April). We offer three CCE sessions (Sunday afternoon, 3:00pm - 4:30pm / Tuesday evening, 6:00pm - 7:30pm / Wednesday evening, 6:00pm - 7:30pm ), and each one needs 50+ adult catechists to fully staff the classrooms. If you are a confirmed Catholic who loves their faith and likes kids, we need your help! This doesn’t happen without amazing people… would you be one of them? Please contact Mike Smith for more details.
“Regular Registration” for CCE:
If you are the parent / guardian of a student (entering
Kinder - High School) who has not yet registered for CCE /
Sacramental Preparation classes during the 2018 - 2019
catechetical year, you must attend the “regular” registration
event on Saturday, August 18th from 2:00pm - 5:00pm in
the FLC. This will be your only remaining opportunity to
sign up your child(ren) before the start of classes in
mid-September. We will not register anyone in the Parish
Office. The “school year” program meets weekly on
Sunday afternoons (3:00pm - 4:30pm), Tuesday evenings
(6:00pm - 7:30pm), or Wednesday evenings (6:00pm -
7:30pm); Home-Based Catechesis is also available.
Registered families should bring a parish offering envelope
so we can verify your parish membership status. “Late”
registration will begin the week of September 30th; student
absences will accrue during this time.
NOTE: It is our policy that no one will ever be turned
away due to an inability to pay CCE tuition… however,
those families MUST speak with Fr. Felix PRIOR to the
family registering for Formation classes to get a waiver
from him. You may contact him at [email protected] or
281-446-8211. Again, full payment of CCE tuition is
expected at the time of registration. If you do not pay on
the day of registration, we cannot guarantee there will be
room for your child(ren).

Reading 2: From the Letter of St. Paul to the Ephesians 1:3-14 Be holy and without blemish before Him; exist for the praise of His glory. God has filled us with every spiritual blessing under Heaven and sealed us by His Spirit. He made Himself known to us throughout history by His prophets, and most definitively by His Son. God is love, and God loves us. He made us, He redeemed us, and our eternal destiny is to be joyful with Him forever. With the graces He gives us, we can be holy, peaceful, joyful, and Spirit-filled, for nothing is impossible with God. Cooperate with the graces the Lord pours out upon you, and inherit eternal happiness!
Gospel: Mark 6:7-13 Jesus summoned the Twelve and gave them authority. Jesus sent His Apostles out two by two to preach repentance, drive out demons, and heal the sick by anointing them with oil.
