Pastor’s Weekly Message
The Greatest Commandment With some 613 commandments in ‘the Law’ by rabbinical
count, the question of which was the greatest of them all was
often discussed among the rabbis. In today’s gospel, the
lawyer asked Jesus, “Teacher, which commandment in the law
is the greatest?” Even though the lawyer asked Jesus to name
one, Jesus responded by naming two: Love God with all your
being (Deuteronomy 6:5) and love your neighbor as yourself
(Leviticus 19:18). Jesus summarized the whole of the Law and
the Prophets in these two laws which in actual fact is one law.
For Jesus, the second followed directly and necessarily from
the first. The love of God must show in the way we respond to
our neighbor and that response must flow from our love for
the Creator! To love God with our whole mind, our whole
heart, and our whole soul, and loving our neighbor as
ourselves, is more of an attitude in life than a list of things to
do. The question then is: how well am I keeping these
commandments?
The church exists to preach this love of God and neighbor to
people of every nation. We are not to choose between two
laws but rather we are called to keep the two. Evangelization
is not just telling people about God and baptism, it is also
about social justice and option for the poor. That is why the
Church teaches that social justice is an integral part of
evangelization, a constitutive dimension of preaching the
gospel, and an essential part of the Church's mission. In the
first reading today (Exodus 22:20-26), God commanded the
Israelites to care for the widow, orphan and the stranger. As
Communities of Salt and Light, a 1993 document of the US
Catholic Bishops stated: “We are called in a special way to
serve the poor and vulnerable; to build bridges of solidarity
among peoples of differing races and nations, language and
ability, gender and culture … to show our respect for the
Creator by our care for creation and our commitment to work
for environmental justice.”
Fun-filled Festival:
We had an amazing fall festival last week! It was a great joy
to see so many people having fun and mingling with others.
The God of rain and bright sunshine gave us both on the same
day! He worked everything out in His own way and it all
turned out perfect for us. An event of that magnitude required
a lot of coordination and organization. So I am grateful to
everyone who helped in small or big ways to ensure the
success of the festival. Without you and your involvement, we
would not have been able to have as much fun and well
organized event as we had. Congratulations to the festival
chair and co-chair and all the booth coordinators for a job well
done! I also congratulate all those who won the raffle prizes.
Even if you did not win a prize, I hope you enjoyed the food
from different nations, the games, entertainment and maybe
just an opportunity to meet another parishioner or make
friends with someone in the community. There is no prize
greater than building community and relationships! Thank you
all for sharing your faith and your resources with our parish in
this spectacular way. We will soon update you with the
financial report of the festival.
Rite of Acceptance and Welcoming:
At the 11AM Mass today, we are having the rite of acceptance
and welcome for those preparing for the sacraments at Easter.
During this rite, those who have been inquiring about the
Catholic faith will now begin a conscious preparation towards
the reception of the sacraments of initiation. Inquirers who
were never baptized will now be called Catechumens while
those who were baptized in other Christian traditions will be
called Candidates. During the rite, these catechumens and
candidates will literally be marked with the cross of Christ as
God’s own. As they begin this journey to full membership in
the Catholic Church, they will need the support of the parish.
Their sponsors have made the commitment to accompany
them on this journey and they too will need our prayers. We
are blessed with a large number of catechumens and
candidates this year. If you are able to share your faith as a
sponsor, please talk with Judy Bitowf our Adult Formation
and RCIA director.
Young Adult Ministry at St. Mary Magdalene: Our parish is exploring ways to reach out to our young adults,
those ages 18-39. If you or someone you know is in this age
bracket then visit our parish website for more information.
The link is https://www.st-mm.com/young-adult-ministry. We
invite you to register next Sunday after each Mass to register
and get to know more about this ministry and how to serve
you. Our vision is to create together programs that will benefit
you as a young adult of our parish. Fr. Tony is already
working with some young adults and parish staff to jumpstart
this ministry and we hope to work with neighboring parishes
and the archdiocese.
My Grandmother:
My maternal grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Fayemi Gbodi
(aged 110), died on October 7, 2017 and will be buried on
November 10, 2017 in Nigeria. I will be travelling to Nigeria
next Sunday after my assigned Masses for the funeral. It is
going to be an emotional moment but also a special honor for
me as a grandson to preside at my grandmother’s funeral
Mass. She lived a long happy life and we count it as a great
blessing to celebrate. I have a lot of good memories of her.
She taught us the power of prayers and dependence on God,
the value of hard work and showing hospitality and
generosity. Even in adversities she showed a deep faith. She
was survived by my mother and three other children, 14
grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.
Kindly keep in your prayers as I travel and
for the eternal repose of my grandma and the
consolation of our family.
Check the bulletin for the Mass schedules
on the Solemnity of All Saints and Mass
on All Souls Day.

October 29 is Priesthood Sunday! Catholic parishes throughout the United States will show
support for their priests with prayer. In addition with
great celebration and appreciation for our priests,
especially our very own Father Felix and Father Anthony.
Priesthood Sunday was established in 2003 to express
appreciation for the devoted priests who serve them their
communities so faithfully. Such a celebration is
increasingly relevant in light of the declining number of
priests in the U.S. Only about 4,000 of the 19,000
parishes in this country currently have more than one
priest. Many priests serve two or more parishes by
themselves.
In the spirit of Priesthood Sunday, say thank you to our
priests of St. Mary Magdalene or other parishes you may
visit for their vocation and service to the Church!

No Other School
Teaches Them To
Shine Like This.
When you choose St. Mary Magdalene for your children,
you surround them with a community that shares your
faith and your values. Here your children will learn to shine
- with a light that they will carry with them into the world.
The faculty and staff of SMMCS would like to wish all students throughout
our community a happy, blessed and safe return to school.
Each night in the United States, an
estimated 600,000 people live on the streets.
This October, St. Mary Magdalene
Catholic School wants to do its part in
showing that even a small act of love, such
as donating a pair of socks, can make a big
difference in the lives of our neighbors who
are homeless.
Socktober giving has already begun.
Collection baskets have been placed outside
of each classroom and/or socks can be
brought to the school’s front office. We are
looking for socks of all sizes.

Breaking Open the Word for Families for the 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time
By: Ginger Herrington
Reading 1: Exodus 22:20-26 If you cry out to Me, I will hear you, says the Lord. In the Book of Exodus, God instructs the
Israelites in their behavior towards those who are vulnerable: the alien/stranger (immigrant); the widows
and orphans; the poor. God warns the Israelites to take special care of the vulnerable, for He will hear
their cry and respond to their need.
Reading 2: First Thessalonians 1:5c-10 From you the word of the Lord has sounded forth. St. Paul praises the community in Thessalonica for sharing their
faith, the Word of the Lord they received
Gospel: Matthew 22:34-40
The Great Commandment. Jesus is tested again this week for the purpose of getting Him in trouble, but He
confounds His testers. He declares the greatest commandment and marries another to it: we are to love the Lord our
God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Give God all your love, and love your
neighbor, for they are made in His Image.
Wednesday, November 1 is the Feast of All Souls, a Holy Day of Obligation. Come to Mass!

diferentes razas y naciones, idiomas y capacidades, género y
¡Felicitaciones a
