Monday July 6 Saint Maria Goretti Virgin Martyr ndash died in 1902 at age twelve born near Ancona she was stabbed to death preferring to die than to be raped with her mother present she was canonized in 1950 before the

largest crowd ever assembled at that time in Rome for a canonization patroness of teenage girls

Thursday July 9 Saint Augustine Zhao Rong Priest and Companions Martyrs ndash The 120 martyrs honored today died between 1648 and 1930 Most of them (eighty-seven) were born in China and were children parents

catechists or laborers ranging from nine years of age to seventy-two This group included four Chinese

priests The thirty-three foreign-born martyrs were mostly priests or women religious especially from the Order of

Preachers (including St Francis Capillas died 15 Jan 1648 proto-martyr of China) the Paris Foreign Mission

Society the Friars Minor Jesuits Salesians and Franciscan Missionaries of Mary Augustine Zhao Rong was a

Chinese soldier who accompanied the prisoner Bishop John Gabriel Taurin Dufresse (Paris Foreign mission Society)

to his martyrdom in Beijing Moved by the bishoprsquos courage Augustine sought baptism and not long after was

ordained a diocesan priest He was martyred in 1815 Beatified in groups at various times these 120 martyrs were

canonized 1 October 2000 by Pope John Paul II

Cross Catholic Outreach

ndash Fr Carlos Chavez will

be visiting our parish

next weekend to speak at all the Masses on behalf of

the poor in developing countries Cross Catholic

Outreach was founded to create a meaningful link

between parishes in America and the priests and nuns

working in the Church overseas in the Caribbean

Africa Asia Central and South America

Fr Chavez is a native New Mexican He was

ordained to the priesthood at St Francis Cathedral

Santa Fe NM in 1984 Hersquos been a pastor for 23 years

and Parochial Vicar at various parishes and ministries

within the Archdiocese of Santa Fe during his past

thirty years of ordained ministry Fr Chavez says

Thursday July 9 Saint Augustine Zhao Rong Priest and Companions Martyrs ndash The 120 martyrs honored today died between 1648 and 1930 Most of them (eighty-seven) were born in China and were children parents

priests The thirty-three foreign-born martyrs were mostly priests or women religious especially from the Order of

Preachers (including St Francis Capillas died 15 Jan 1648 proto-martyr of China) the Paris Foreign Mission

Society the Friars Minor Jesuits Salesians and Franciscan Missionaries of Mary Augustine Zhao Rong was a
