SEND OUT YOUR SPIRIT
Last week we heard that, following the Ascension, the disciples, Mary,
and other followers of the Lord retreated to the upper room in prayer. This
week we hear that, while praying in that room, the Holy Spirit comes upon
them. Jesus’ post-Resurrection promise, recounted in today’s Gospel, is ful-
filled: the power of the Holy Spirit comes upon Jesus’ followers. Saint Paul
tells us that all of us, in some way, are given gifts of the Holy Spirit, gifts
that can be used to spread the Good News. Today is one of the Church’s
greatest festivals. Let us carry the refrain of the responsorial psalm with us
throughout the coming week: “Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the
face of the earth!” (Psalm 104:30). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Today, the languages of the whole world arise to
God in a Pentecost of praise. In some American
dioceses, the Mass is offered every Sunday in more
than thirty different languages, including the silent
praise of American Sign Language. Fifty years ago,
the landscape of liturgy was very different. It was
grounded firmly in Latin, which is to the present day
still the official language of the Roman Rite. Very few
people were fluent in Latin, even though in those days
Latin was far more widely studied in school.
Nevertheless, almost every Catholic was competent in
the responses and chants of Latin since it is not
difficult to pronounce. The clergy were normally
minimally competent in Latin, since much of seminary
education was conducted in that language.
When the Second Vatican Council was
convened, all of the debate and daily work of the
council was to be in Latin. In the first session in
1962, Boston’s Cardinal Richard Cushing continually
complained about it, and threatened not to return in
1963 if something wasn’t done. He convinced the
fathers when he rose to speak in fairly fluent Latin in
an unforgettable Boston twang. The next year, he
returned, but with a simultaneous translation system
funded by the people of Boston. The ordinary
everyday language of the people, the vernacular, had
arrived at the Vatican via Boston! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
“I Am” Stewardship Prayer
My parish is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am.
It will be holy, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them.
It will do great work, if I work. It will be prayerful, if I pray.
It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring others into worship, if I invite and bring them. It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of
fearlessness and faith, of compassion, charity and mercy, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these same
things. Therefore, with the help of God, I now dedicate myself to the task of being all things that I want my parish
to be. Amen.
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Filled with the Holy Spirit, the
apostles begin to speak in tongues (Acts 2:1-11).

into one body and given to drink of one Spirit

******************************************* The annual picnic is one of the oldest activities that the parish puts on every year. One of the reasons, early on for it was to raise money to pay the teachers salaries. It was more of an ice cream social at first before it became a Bar-B Que over time. It is a time of hard work as well as fun for all. It is a time when many of the former parishioners come home to see many old friends. It as known by many here in Daviess County as having some of the best chicken, mutton and burgoo that there is. The picnic has changed over the years in size and location but not good fellowship. In the early years it started on the Church grounds and was later held in Tlmbrook Woods down the road. For two different years there were three different picnics in the same year. Some being held on the John Tong farm, one here at the Church grounds and the last of the year at Timbrook Woods. In the early years the pits were dug by hand every year until finally the block pits were built in the early 40‘s. The band featuring Leo Thompson, Genevieve Willett, Frankie Pass, and Francis Feldpausch played for several years at the picnics. They would play music for the people to dance to and from what is understood, Lois Knott was the first to hit the dance floor in her younger days. The priests would ask the parishioners after mass what they could donate for the burgoo and so on. Some years there was not enough of one thing and too much of another so there come a time to get better organized. In 1962, Bernard Beyke and Charlie Thompson help to form the picnic into the so called modern age picnic. The committee would buy everything the same and started keeping better records of it. Then the following year it would be easier to see if more or less was needed of each item. Bernard and Charlie ran the picnic for six years until Hugh Ebelhar, Ira Hardy and Gene Thompson took over. Since then a rotating committee has taken over. A new person joins the committee every year and the others move up until the third year when they would become the chairman of the committee. During that time, the chicken pit ran from east to west until the parish purchased additional property from the Hancocks in 1885 and was moved along the gravel road. Most of the parking now is on the land we borrow from the Hancocks's for a day. The picnic grew from 350 chickens, 3500 lbs of mutton and 9 kettles of burgoo in 1962, according to Bernard Beyke's records. to 700 chickens, 5500 lbs. of mutton and 13 kettles of burgoo by 1983. The present mutton pit was built in 1982. We will make about 625 chickens, 18 kettles of burgoo and about 2,000+ pounds of mutton, this year plus about 1,000 pounds of pork. There have been a lot of nice picnic days but there have been some bad storms too. According to Frank Sauer. “Mr. Sug”, 1978 ranks at the top of the bad days. It rained over four inches the day of the picnic. The morning of the picnic, the ladies of the church prayed the rosary in the parish hall to hopefully ward off the rain. The rain was coming down so hard you couldn't hear the rosary being said. The burgoo kettles filled with water and the men had to dig ditches around the kettles to keep the fires lit. The fires under the mutton vats were floating. It was a blessing that we had our new parish hall to feed the crowd in that year. However, all the food managed to get served that year. The burgoo was transported to the parish hall by a bobcat in10 gallon cans to be sold. Most of the games were cut out because of the standing water on the church grounds. Due to all the rain, the parking area had become quite a large mudhole. Paul Cecil went and brought his tractor to the grounds to pull the cards through the mud. Bobby Jackson had the job of laying in the mud to hook up the cars to the tractor. Other years we have had big summertime thunderstorms to hit as soon as the last bingo game was called. On Friday nights the woman would come to the Parish Hall to make potato salad for the dinner stand and the next day help prepare the ingredients and debone the meat for the burgoo to be made by the men. Today we buy the Potato Salad from Moonlite, so in some ways it's much easier today than in times past.
Mr. "Sug“ is no longer with us and will be missed by many. He was usually the first one to show up on picnic day to light the fires under the
vets. He would arrive around 3:00am. Today that is Dan and Josh Thomas and a couple others, then they work all day to complete the burgoo
and clean up.
