Augustinian News
Last weekend Father Carlos read a letter from Father Michael Di Gregorio, OSA, our
Provincial, informing us that the Augustinian community will return the pastoral care
of St. Mary of the Assumption to the archbishop. We have included a copy of that
letter in this week’s bulletin for parishioners who may not have been at Mass last
weekend.
All parishes are the responsibility of the local bishop. For more than 170 years the Augustinians
of the Province of Saint Thomas of Villanova have served here. The archdiocese has appointed
Fr. Israel Rodriguez, a diocesan priest, as the administrator here. Fr. Rodriguez was ordained in
2009 and served for a few years at Saint Patrick’s Parish in South Lawrence. Presently he is the
pastor of Saint Joseph in Lynn. At least one other priest will be assigned with him. The date for
this transition is June 1 and during the next weeks we will work on facilitating this transition for
you and Fr. Israel.
We Augustinians do not know our next ministries. As soon as we have this information we will
let you know. We thank you for your prayers and support during the years we have served here,
especially during this time of transition.
To Parishioners who are preparing for Marriage and other Special Celebrations...
The dates you have reserved for your celebrations have been reserved. Father Carlos and John
will be in touch with you about the preparation for your celebrations.
Israel.

First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-7 Isaiah describes an individual who had been taught by God to reach out to others. He also describes this individual's willingness to be beaten and spit upon, secure that with God's help, he will not be disgraced.
Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11 Paul discusses how Jesus did not declare equality with God, but took on human form. He humbled Himself enough to accept dying on the cross. God in turn exalted Him and wants us to respect Jesus' name and worship Him.
Gospel: Luke 22:14—23:56 Luke gives a detailed account of Jesus' last supper with the Apostles, where Jesus tells them He will soon suffer in fulfillment of God's will. Then Jesus prayed that He might be spared if it suited God's will. After Judas betrayed Jesus, He was arrested. Although Pilate did not think Jesus was guilty of a crime, he gave in to the will of the people, and sentenced Jesus to death on a cross. Then Jesus was crucified and His body laid in a new tomb.

The Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday (The Easter Vigil)
We, the Church, enter into the Triduum. We make that passage with our Lord. Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday are not historical flashbacks of what happened to Jesus; neither are they an annual pilgrimage back to the First Century to be present at the important events of salvation. Each year, the whole church enters into this celebration of the Paschal Mystery, proclaiming the life-giving death of Jesus, dying with Him in order to lay hold of life at a deeper level. This is especially true for those who will enter the death-resurrection waters of Baptism at the Vigil. The liturgies of the Triduum are one three-day liturgy, one continuous celebration with one central focus: Christ is our salvation — through Him and through His cross we are saved and made free. Our participation in these liturgies and our living of these days lead us to our celebration of Easter and the new life promised us by our Savior.

GOOD FRIDAY PROCESSION Every year, our parish offers the Living Stations of the Cross. Youth, adults, and children from our Parish, process through the streets of our surrounding community, and stop along the way to reflect on the pain Jesus endured for us.
This is not a devotion, we believe that He gave His life for our life today. He is with us in our own sorrow, our trials and our joys. As members of St. Mary of the Assumption Parish community, we share in these Stations, the struggles we face – and the hope we have in Jesus. If you would like to participate, please be mindful of the weather and dress accordingly. Take along a Way of the Cross booklet, pamphlet, or prayer book to make this a more meaningful experience. All are welcome.

HOLY THURSDAY
Washing of the Feet
The Gospel of Holy Thursday (John’s account
of the Last Supper) features the washing of the
feet. In hearing the Gospel, we reflect on the
implications of the Eucharist which calls the
faithful into service. The homily leads from the
Gospel to the Washing of the Feet.
This ritual is not a reenactment of what took place at the Last
Supper. This gesture of humility and service expresses the
responsibilities of those who share the Eucharist. Our
Baptism calls all believers into lives of service.
JUEVES SANTO
BILINGUAL LITURGIES
At Saint Mary of the Assumption we celebrate these
liturgies with bilingual celebrations. It is important
that the entire community pray together. It is also a
challenge. It can be difficult to listen to a foreign
language, particularly during the homily. We try to
facilitate the participation of all in several ways by:
Preparing programs which have the translation of the
readings
Choosing music which invites the participation of all
Preparing homilies in a way that people are involved
The Eucharist is a sacrament of unity. Jesus prays at his
Last Supper “that all may be one as He and the Father are
one” (John 17:21). He offers this prayer as He prepares
to go to the cross for the salvation of all people. Our
coming together for the Mass of the Lord’s Supper is a
sign of our desire to live as one and calls us to a deeper
unity.
comunidad entera ore junta.
