�� Have a bible, small notebook or journal, and commit to a #me each day to Live Lent!�
�� Read the cita#on given for each day �
�� Take #me to sit quietly with the reading and let it fill your thoughts, finding a word, phrase or
image to connect with and open your heart to hear God’s response�
�� Using your journal, make note of what emo#on comes to the surface � are you angry with
someone? Hurt by someone? Is someone ill? Do you need to change a bad habit? Where is God
in your life? Do you want to be kinder? These are just examples of things that may come to the

LENT - PREPARING FOR EASTER
ST. MARY OF THE NATIVITY (SCITUATE HARBOR) PARISH LENTEN
MISSION takes place March 16�19 (Mon�Thurs). There will be a
morning mission at 8:30 in the Parish Center and an evening mission
at 7:00 p.m. in the main church.� Both morning and evening talks will
be the same.� The theme of the mission is: "The Freedom to Believe:
Becoming an Adult Catholic".� Fr. Simeon Gallagher, OFMCap will be
the guest homilist.� All adults are welcome! �
Once again, the generosity of you, the parishioners, is amazing.
You donated $805 to our high school service trip Mardi Gras Bake
Sale Fundraiser. The service trip will be happening July 19 �24. Eve-
ry summer our high school students embark on trip they think is
about “helping others” which is true but which doesn’t even come
close to describing the experience. These trips are transforma#on-
al #mes when the students learn that giving to others as people of
faith is a deeper and richer experience than they could have imag-
ined. Thank you for your generosity and support of this and other
fundraisers that help make these trips possible each year. �

Live Lent�
Do not merely give something up…make a permanent change…
to do this is a journey. God is present in our life now. To recog-
nize these moments puts us in deeper union with Him. “Turn
away from sin and be faithful to the gospel”. What is holding
you back in your rela#onship with God? When we Live Lent
with purpose we build a solid founda#on for living our Catholic
faith everyday with purpose long a<er Lent.�

Visit our Live Lent table in the gathering space a<er Masses
throughout the Lenten season. Talk with a partner in faith and
gain some new ideas for prayer, fas#ng and almsgiving. Please
fill out a Live Lent Card located on the table with your Lenten
promises. Your personal journey shared can be inspira#on for
renewal for others. �

During Lent we focus on repentance and bap#sm. Those who
are not yet bap#zed enter final prepara#ons for Bap#sm, Con-
firma#on, and Eucharist. We who are bap#zed devote ourselves
to prayer, fas#ng, and almsgiving and embrace a spirit of re-
pentance as we prepare to renew our bap#smal promises. For
those of us bap#zed as infants, the Easter renewal of bap#smal
promises is the opportunity to make an inten#onal decision to
add our “I do” to the “I do” voiced by our parents and godpar-
ents long ago.�
�
Even as we focus on Lent with its themes of repentance and
bap#sm, we need to look forward and plan for Holy Week, East-
er and beyond. The “beyond” part is to create a mini fourteen�
month pastoral plan for April 9, 2020 (Holy Thursday) through
June 6, 2021 (Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of
Christ) to give us some direc#on and focal points while we work
on a three�year pastoral plan for 2021�2024. Our priori#es for
the fourteen�month pastoral plan are the Year of the Eucharist,
communica#ons in our parishes, and voca#ons.�

ACTIONS TO ENHANCE LIVING LENT
Jesus was like us in all things but sin. In today’s gospel, Jesus is tempted over and over but does not give
in to the tempta�ons. This first Sunday in Lent is a good �me to look at our lives and to ask ourselves
what tempts us away from God and from the light of Christ. There are three spiritual prac�ces of Lent
that are intended to help us improve our rela�onship with God: prayer, fas�ng, and almsgiving. Which of
these prac�ces will be most helpful to you in avoiding tempta�on this Lent? Don’t wait. . . start today!�
DISCIPLES IN MISSION
Do you have ideas for the Year of the Eucharist, communica'ons, and voca'ons?�
Please email them to [email protected] as soon as possible, but no later than Sunday, March 15.�
Year of the Eucharist: Cardinal Sean has called the Year
of the Eucharist to help people gain a be?er understand-
ing of the Eucharist and to invite and encourage our
brothers and sisters to find the consola#on of the Lord
through par#cipa#on in the celebra#on of the Eucharist
and in #mes of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.�
�
Communica#ons: How can we strengthen communica-
#ons in our parishes by making be?er use of our exis#ng
communica#ons tools and adding other communica-
#ons tools?�
�
Voca#ons: How can we create a culture of voca#on in
our parishes by helping each person to discern and fol-
low God’s plan for his or her life, with a par#cular focus
on diocesan priesthood?�
Our world is full of so many images that lure our minds and hearts elsewhere. Does your home reflect the peace of Christ? Does your
home include symbols that help all who enter know that God is part of your life? Here are some suggested symbols that may en-
hance your home for your Lenten journey: �

Crucifix: Many probably have this symbol of Jesus willingness to die for us, but if you don’t have one, this may be a good #me to
get one . . . or maybe a child could draw one and it can be displayed for all�
�
Water: A simple bowl of holy water in a central place can be reminder of our bap#sm. Perhaps you could bless yourself with this
water as you start each day.�
�
Sand: Perhaps a bowl of sand can help us remember our journey. Jesus himself spent #me in the desert in prayer. The desert
can be a good place of retreat, where there is freedom from distrac#ons. It is a good place for us to face our tempta#ons. �
�
Candle: A wonderful symbol of light, a symbol of the light of Christ, the candle can become a symbol of our faith in God’s pres-
ence among us. Imagine ligh#ng the candle when we feel tempted, when we feel tension, when we need the light of Christ to guide
us reminding us of the power of that light in our lives. �
�
Bible: Keep the bible in a prominent place displaying the priority of the Word of God in your home. Perhaps, when sensing God’s
presence, when needing God’s presence and love, one can simply touch the Bible, lingering for a few seconds with the simple prayer
of “I love you Lord.” �
Something well begun is half done! Let’s have a good beginning.�
