A LETTER FROM OUR PARISH ADMINISTRATOR

Promises to Keep: Listen to your Life

‘The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep.’ It’s easier said than done. Easy to make a good start - a teacher going into a classroom for the first time / a priest celebrating Mass for the first time / a couple exchanging marriage vows / a mother holding her own child in her own arms for the first time / walking into a new job. In all of those circumstances there seems to be nothing that would possibly prevent us from keeping the promises we have to keep. No matter how lovely or dark or deep the woods of life may be, there are times when we couldn’t even imagine them distracting us to such a degree that in any way we might betray the promises that we so much wanted to keep. But time passes, enthusiasm declines, converting dreams into reality becomes more difficult as the humdrum existence of daily life wears us down, as we become more aware of our own personal failures and weaknesses. So at this New Year we pray for courage, for perseverance, for love: courage to do what is right, perseverance to live up to the responsibilities we have in life, and love to help us confront in ourselves the failures and the short-cuts that we so easily substitute for right living. ‘The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep.’ Those who practice mindfulness (the act of concentrating on your breathing, being aware of your breath and what is going on for you in the present moment) note that when you are on a journey it is certainly helpful to know where you are going, but remember the only thing that is ultimately real about your journey is the step you are taking at this moment. That is all there ever is. So we discover that if we really keep our eyes peeled to it and our ears open, if we really pay attention to it, even such a limited and limiting life as the one you and I are living opens us onto extraordinary vistas. Taking your child to school. Kissing your spouse goodbye. Eating lunch with a friend. Trying to do a decent day’s work. Watching the snow flakes fall against your window. There is no event so commonplace but that God is present within it, almost hidden, always leaving you room to recognize Him or not to recognize Him, but all the more fascinatingly because of that, all the more compellingly and hauntingly….. The critically acclaimed and widely read author, Frederick Buechner, says something well worth reflecting upon at the start of a new year: “Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is. In the boredom and pain of it no less than in the excitement and gladness. Touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace” Have a blessed week. Father Aidan O’ Boyle

PARISH DIRECTORY & TRANSFORMATION

ST. ITA Our weekly comments frequently refer to the website, Catholics Online. Without the structure and Q & A approach of the old Baltimore Catechism, it opens the door to many discussions that are part of

our wonderful faith. You can reference a brief biography of any saint – by name, by feast day, by occupation, by patronage, and on and on. From time to time we have presented saints recognized by parishes in our Chicago north side locale. Today we recognize St. Ita; her feast day is January 15. In addition to the facts and figures, the website will occasionally include “fun facts” about the saint. The information provided about St. Ita is particularly interesting and pertinent to our own life styles. According to the article, St. Ita was asked which three of the infinite number of human foibles God most detested. She replied: “a scowling face,’ “obstinacy in wrong doing,” and “too great a confidence in the power of money.” St. Ita lived in the fifth century. Isn’t it interesting how up to date her perceptions were. Since the start of a new year is a good time for resolutions and life style improvements, we might take heed of St. Ita’s warnings. Start your new year with a smile of your face, a bit more flexibility and compromise in your opinions, and a generosity with your time and talents. It could be the basis for a wonderful new year.....and a wonderful YOU! Lord God, it was through the power of your Spirit that Saint Ita was tireless in caring for the afflicted, and in guiding the young to-ward holiness, and so we pray: prepare in our hearts, as you prepared in hers, a home where you will dwell.

BEYOND OUR PARISH

Dec. 20, 2017 Dear Father O’Boyle and St. Mary of the Woods Parishioners We would like to express our gratitude to you, the families and staff for participating in the 2017 Baby Bottle Program for the Women’s Center. The total collected in this year’s campaign came to a total of $4,105.70. This is a fantastic effort and we are truly grateful for everyone’s generous support. The Baby Bottle Project is our primary fundraiser and enables us to contin-ue our efforts of saving moms and their babies from the tragedy of abortion. We are able to proved women with counseling, material goods assistance, pregnancy testing, ultrasounds and more. All of our services are free of charge! To date, the Women’s Center has saved over 39,000 babies and this has been made possible because we have been blessed with the support of so many wonderful souls like you and everyone involved from the parish. Thanks to you, we will continue in our efforts to promote a culture of life. Hopefully, with your prayers and assistance, we will see an end to abortion in our lifetime. God bless you, Sincerely, Lowell Wallace Lowell Wallace Project Manager

Dear Friends in Christ, On behalf of the Archdiocese of Chicago and our brothers and sis-ters who have been severely affected by Hurricane Harvey and Hur-ricane Irma, I want to sincerely thank you for the tremendous out-pouring of support you have shown them during this challenging time. Banding together to answer the cry of those in need and bring-ing financial, physical and spiritual aid to those who have just lost so much is a reflection of how God’s love lives in all of us. As a donor to the Hurricane Relief Appeal, your tremendous gener-osity has gone towards Catholic Charities USA’s emergency relief and support efforts to those affected by these devastating natural disasters. You helped us raise over $800,000 during this appeal, a true testament to the compassion of the people of the Archdiocese of Chicago. May God bless you and your families during this holiday season. My sincerest thanks, Rev. Peter Wojcik Fr. Peter Wojcik Director, Parish Vitality and Mission

We Did It! As 2017 ended, a village in Kenya will be able to get water, girls will be protected from child labor in India, and children will have the possibility of walking in Zambia.

Those are just three of the MISSIO projects recently funded with your help.

In this New Year, let's multiply the thanks... see who else needs your help! Ongoing support of the Pope’s Missions is vital to missionaries serving in 1,110 dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America. Your gift makes it possible for these local priests, religious, and catechists to build up the Church by bringing the light of Christ to the world’s most vulnerable communities.
