101 Questions about the Catholic Mass (continued) 65) What happens to the bread and wine on the altar as the priest prays over them dur-ing the Consecration? Through the priest’s words of consecration, the bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ – called transubstantiation. They still look the same. But the whole sub-stance of the bread becomes the Substance of the Body and Blood of Jesus and the whole sub-stance of the wine changes into the Substance of His Body and Blood. Jesus is present really, truly, and substantially, in His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity! This is a great mystery that we cannot fully understand except by theological faith. St. Theodore of Mopsueta reminds us, “The Lord did not say: ‘This is a symbol of my Body, and this is a symbol of my Blood’ but: ‘This is my Body and my Blood’… for by the prayer of thanksgiving and the words spoken over them, they have been changed into Flesh and Blood.” 66) Why does the priest raise the Host and Chalice after the Consecration? The Host and chalice are raised to the people for the purpose of adoration. The faithful may make an act of adoration by saying silently, “My Lord and my God” at this moment. The Host and Chalice are usually held aloft for a few seconds so that people have time to make an act of adoration. This is a very important moment in the Mass, when Christ is now truly present in the Eucharist on the altar. Our prayers are powerful during this moment as well. Sometimes, bells are rung to indicate the moment of the elevation. 67) What is the memorial acclamation? Immediately after the Consecration, the memorial acclamation or “mystery of faith” is recited, which may be one of four prayers, such as: “Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again “to proclaim our belief in the miracle that has just occurred on the altar. 68) How does the Eucharistic Prayer end? The Eucharistic prayer ends with the Great Amen after the final doxology. This is one of the key moments of the lay participation in the Eucharistic prayer. “Amen: means “I believe” - our profession of believe in all that has occurred. 69) Can we see and taste the changes of the bread and wine when they become the Body and Blood of Christ? No. St. Thomas Aquinas explained that everything is made up of “substance” and “accident.” Substance is the core of the item, what makes it be that particular thing and nothing else. Acci-dents are the qualities of a particular thing. So, for example, the substance of a stone is the es-sence that makes this particular object a stone as distinct from being a piece of wood. It is of-ten intangible. An accident, on the other hand, is a tangible quality that can vary. This particu-lar stone looks blue and feels cold. “Blue” and “Cold” are accidents. At the consecration, the substance of the bread and wine changes to the Body and Blood of Je-sus. The accidents of the bread and wine remain the same. In other words, it still looks like bread, it tastes like bread, it feels like bread, but it isn’t bread any longer. 70) What do I need to help me believe what I cannot see or fully understand about the Mass? Faith is the answer. “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews11:1). Theological faith is a gift from God. “Without faith it is impossible to please God”(Hebrews 11:6). 71) What is the role of the lay faithful during the consecration? The lay faithful are called to unite themselves with Jesus as a joint offering to the Heavenly Father.

May Rosary in Honor of

the Blessed Mother The Rosary offers us an opportunity to step back for a few minutes from the noise and din of life. In our busy modern life with its distractions and discouragements, the Rosary can be a wonderful means of prayer and an easy way to come into contact with the presence of God, Our Lady, and

the saints. It is an especially good technique for growing in deeper understanding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The mysteries of the Rosary now take us through the whole Gospel, into the mysteries of eternal life, which are dimly but powerfully portrayed in the Book of Revelation. (Father Benedict Groeschel, C.F.R) The month of May is dedicated to the celebration of Mary the Mother of God. Please join us in praying a scriptural rosary in honor of our Mother Every Thursday in the month of May (May 4, May 11, May 18 and May 25) at 7:00 pm at St. Mary’s Church.

Missionary Cooperative Appeal The Missionary Cooperative Appeal is an annual program in which missionaries from around the world speak at each parish. The goal of this appeal is to increase awareness of missionary work and to raise funds to help missionary organizations continue their evangelization efforts. In the Diocese of Sacramento, 51 different missions were selected this year to each speak at two parishes. Last year through generous denotations, we collected $426,500 for 48 missions. Next weekend, our parish will be visited by Fr. Louis Raj Porathur with Madagascar Mission of Carmelites of Mary Immaculate . He/She will share with us their courageous evangelization efforts on behalf of the Catholic Church and give us an opportunity to support their work in the field. A second collection will be taken up following their presentation. Special envelopes will be provided for your convenience. Donations made by check should be made payable to the parish. All funds collected throughout the Diocese will be equally divided among the 51 missionary organizations visiting the Diocese of Sacra-mento this year. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
