Our Vision With Jesus Christ as our inspiration and guide,
St Mary's Catholic Primary School Orange is a Professional Learning Community that works in collaboration with family, church and community to celebrate high levels of learning for all.
Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time
Mark 1:40-45
A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.”
Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, “I do will it. Be made clean.”
The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean. Then, warning him sternly, he dismissed him at
once. He said to him, “See that you tell no one anything,
but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed;
that will be proof for them.” The man went away and began to publicise the whole matter.
He spread the report abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly.
He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to him from everywhere.
Reflection:
So often, I think that it may be, I wouldn’t say impossible, but very difficult to do good without getting
our hands dirty. And Jesus got dirty with his closeness. But then, He went even further, saying to the man
who was freed from his illness: “Go to the priests, and do what must be done when a leper is healed.
Jesus includes that man who was excluded from social life: He includes him in the Church, includes
him in society. “Go, so that everything is just as it should be”. Jesus never marginalises anyone, ever.
He marginalises Himself in order to include the marginalised, to include us, - sinners, marginalised people,
- by His life”.

Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday is the first day of the season of
Lent. The ashes are placed on our heads in the form
of a cross. This is a reminder that we have turned
away from sin and are being faithful to Jesus. In
2021 in the time of Covid, ashes were sprinkled on
top of the head. The act of placing ashes symbolises
fragility and mortality, and the need to be redeemed
by the mercy of God. Far from being a merely
external act, it symbolises that attitude of internal
penance to which all the baptised are called during
Lent.
On the 17th of February the school celebrated Ash
Wednesday. Grades 3 to 6 celebrated with Mass,
Grades 1 and 2 then separately Kindergarten
gathered at St Mary’s Church and had a special Ash
Wednesday liturgy and prayed to Jesus to be their
‘special friend’.
“2020 NAIDOC Week Winners”
Koori Kids and the NSW Department of Education along with state counterparts were instrumental in the overwhelming success of the 2020 NAIDOC Week School Initiative
Competitions.
During NAIDOC week last year, some of our students entered the NAIDOC week competitions. The ultimate aim of these initiatives was to provide our children with a greater understanding on
the importance of friendship and cultural diversity.
The judging of entries was adjudicated by a panel including; our patron, Aboriginal Elders, Agency Delegates and other members of the community.
Congratulations to Elwyn Evans & Lacey Reiss on being selected as recipients of the ‘NAIDOC Medal of Excellence’ (out of 25 awarded across the state) as part of last year’s initiatives.

From the Principal: Gayle Stratton
This week at St Mary’s we have been thinking about the Love dimension of
our school motto. In particular, the children have been focusing on how
they can show love for their peers through positive and encouraging
behaviours. These behaviours, when observed on the playground, may earn
our students house points which are totalled at the end of each week.
The ‘winning’ house, that is the house showing most Christian leadership
or love towards others are rewarded by being able to wear their house
colour t-shirt on sports days (these are Fridays this term for all
grades). If you can, please take some time to discuss with your child/
children ways that acts of love and service can be demonstrated towards
others and the school community.
One of the most important ways to show love to each other is in the way
we speak to each other. We encourage our students at St Mary’s to choose
kind words and we take it seriously when a child is purposefully mean to
another person.
This also goes for what I refer to as ‘ugly language’ (swearing), which if
and when it happens, results in a playtime detention.
Thank you for bearing with us as we make some adjustments to access to
our school during the school day. We are currently undergoing a routine
safety audit and this was one of the early recommendations. Our students’
safety and wellbeing is of the utmost importance to us.
Our House Point Challenge Winner this week is:
Shannon The members of Shannon may wear a plain yellow t-shirt tomorrow with their sports uniform.
Year Four Gold News, Term One, 2021
We have had a very busy start to the year in 4 Gold! We are loving our new learning spaces and furniture.
Last week we participated in a virtual classroom webinar with many other schools. We learned about detecting fake news online and appropriate sites. In Religion this term we are learning about the commandments God gave to
Moses. We have rewritten the commandments in our own words and are remembering these rules and how God wants us to live and treat others.
We participated in our first Reconciliation this year in the church and attended Ash Wednesday Mass.
In Maths, we are learning about place value and reading and locating large numbers on number lines. We are practicing our automaticity skills
each morning as we try to beat our own scores in BLITZ. We have been talking about non-fictional texts in English. We are learning
about the features of information reports and are writing our own. In Science, we are learning about plants. We have dissected different types of
seeds and have looked at the features of plants. We have been discussing Aboriginal beliefs and have watched and analysed some
Dreamtime stories in History. We understand that for Aboriginal peoples, our country is much more than a place. Rock, tree, river, hill, animal, human
– all were formed by the Ancestors who continue to live in land, water, sky. In Creative Arts we have been learning about the strong connections that the Aboriginal people have with their land and are creating Aboriginal artworks. In Health, we are investigating the act of compassion and having empathy for
others. We are revisiting the idea of focussing our attention and being good listeners and learners.
We are getting ready for our Athletics carnival later in the term in Sport – participating in running and field events. We can’t wait!
St Mary’s Swimming Carnival 2021
On Wednesday the 10th of February, we held our annual school swimming carnival at the Orange Aquatic Centre. It was a fantastic day of swimming and
school spirit. We were very proud of the sportsmanship displayed by all students in and out of the pool.
Before the carnival commenced we honoured Mrs Janet Miller and her contribution to past swimming carnivals by having a minute silence.
Mrs Miller provided so many sporting opportunities for the students at St Mary’s and she always enjoyed watching her students swim
and succeed in the pool.
Students who finished in the top three in their individual events will now advance to the Southern Region Swimming Carnival to be held at the Orange
Aquatic Centre on the 1st of March. We wish them the best of luck.
We would like to thank all parent volunteers for their assistance on the day along with the students from James Sheahan. We would not be able to hold
such a fantastic carnival without you!
Who will be the winning house? We will find out tomorrow! Stay tuned.

STUDENT MOBILE PHONES
Students at St Mary's are not to keep mobile phones,
iPods, iPads, smart watches or other personal
electronic devices in their pockets or school bags.
All students are expected to hand these personal
devices to the front office each morning when they
arrive at school.
The devices are collected at the end of the day from
the front office by individual students.
Latest COVID-19 Update
Students and staff must not attend school or work if they are unwell, even
with the mildness of symptoms including fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, loss of taste, and loss of smell. Students need to be symptom free and a negative COVID-19 test result must be received and sighted by the school prior to their return to school.
Students who do not undertake a COVID-19 test are not permitted to return to school for a 10 day period and they must be symptom free for at least 3 days prior to their return.
Students who have seasonal allergic rhinitis or another condition that presents similarly to flu-like symptoms are still required to get tested for COVID-19 and return a negative test result. Where their symptoms continue beyond 10 days, students should provide documentation from their GP confirming their symptoms are typical for their condition.
Isolated incidents of sneezing or coughing may not indicate that a student is suffering from an illness. Staff should talk with students about how they are feeling to determine if a cough/sneeze is an isolated incident or whether the student is unwell. Where a student is unwell arrangements should be made to send them home.
COVID-19 testing for very young students or students with complex health or disability may be challenging. In these situations, schools are to ask the parent/carer to have their child assessed by their medical practitioner. Where a medical practitioner determines that a COVID-19 test is not indicated, a medical certificate must be provided to the school to confirm that the student does not have symptoms that warrant a COVID-19 test. The certificate must also indicate that the student is able to return to the school environment.
