WELCOME DEREK MOBILIO SEMINARIAN INTERN

This weekend we welcome DEREK MO-BILIO to the St. Mary’s Parish communi-ty. Derek recently completed his second year of Theology at St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, MA and will be with us for a ten-week summer internship. Derek’s home parish is St. Francis of Assisi in Barre. We look forward to being a part of

Derek’s formation for the priesthood in the Diocese of Worcester. Please be sure to welcome Derek when you meet him over the coming weeks.

CONFESSIONS RESUME ON JUNE 6 The Sacrament of Penance will be offered once again on Satur-day afternoon from 3:30 – 4:15 pm beginning next Saturday, June 6th. Our parish confessional remains unsafe due to the closeness of the priest and penitent seated only a few feet apart or separated only by a grill not designed to prevent virus transmission. For the time being Confessions will be heard in the Large Meeting Room opposite the elevator. Penitents will be seated six feet from the priest and will have the option of ano-nymity or facing the priest. The penitent and priest should both be wearing a face covering or mask. A waiting area will be found outside of the large meeting room with chairs also six feet apart. Confessions should not last longer than three to five minutes, in order to limit exposure of both priest and penitent.

ON CARE FOR4 OUR COMMON HOME (Laudato Si’)

Fifth Anniversary of Pope Francis’

Encyclical The week of May 16-24 marked the 5th anniversary of the publication of Pope Francis’ encyclical on the care of crea-tion and the environment We are members of the mystical body of Christ. As members of His body - “through whom all things were made”. We have re-sponsibilities towards all God’s creation, the most precious of whom is the human person. Practices which lead to environmen-tal degradation negatively impact the poor the most. In his video message to celebrate Laudato Si Week, Pope Francis encouraged reflection on the “kind of world…we want to leave to those who will come after us, to children who are growing up…The cry of the earth and the cry of the poor cannot continue…Let us take care of creation, a gift of our good Creator God.” ( https://www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/2020-03/pope-francis-laudato-si-week.html) During Laudato Si Week, the Environmental Stewardship Com-mittee of the Diocese of Worcester, held a diocesan-wide ‘Day of Prayer’ for the Earth, for our brothers and sisters in need, and for the mindful use of the Earth’s resources. Other events originally planned for the spring have now been moved to the fall due to the pandemic. Here are two simple but important ways in which we can reaffirm Laudato Si’s call to be good stewards of creation and to thank God for the wonderful gift of our common home: 1. Reduce waste and counter our “throwaway culture”. (LS no. 22). Let us identify ways in which we can use reusables instead of disposables, and let us commit to making one change that reflects good environmental stewardship, this month. 2. Pray before and after meals, giving God thanks for what we have. Saying a short prayer not only makes mealtimes special and blessed but also helps us recognize what Laudato Si teaches – that this “moment of blessing, however brief, reminds us of our de-pendence on God for life.” (LS no. 227)

The WALK FOR THE HOME-LESS must go on (line) Over the past 15 years, St. Mary’s has participated in the CMHA Walk for the Homeless in Worcester. Since we cannot walk shoulder to shoulder because of Covid-19, they have planned a virtual walk so that much needed funds can be raised for an array of programs provided to thousands of Worcester County residents. As a parish community we can still be involved with this cause by visiting the website walkforthehomeless.org. By selecting DO-NATE NOW you can make a pledge directly to St. Mary’s Team Shrewsbury. If you would like to set up a personal account and join the team, select BECOME A FUNDRAISER and follow directions provid-ed. People who sponsor you can now see your page. Between now and May 31, walk around your neighborhood, yard, or home with family and friends (social distancing of course) and even hold a sign!! If you can send a photo to [email protected] that would be great. For more information email Jeanne Vaccaro at [email protected]. We will keep walking together although apart until we can overcome homelessness. God bless and stay safe.

BEWARE!! SCAM EMAILS Please be aware if you receive an email from Msgr. Mike asking you to do a favor for him. More often than not the request is for the purchase of gift cards. Msgr. Mike will never send you and email asking you to buy gift cards. Be sure to check the email address. If it comes from a gmail account, know that it is a scam.

ST. MARY’S SUNDAY OFFERTORY THANK-YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT

During the past two months as Masses were suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic, the people of St. Mary’s have con-tinued to be very generous in their stewardship and support of our parish. Many parishioners mailed in or dropped off their Sunday envelopes. As we return to the celebration of Mass in our church, we will not be able to pass the basket for collections. Instead, a basket will be placed at the entrances of the church so that you may drop off your offering on the way into Mass or on your way out of church afterwards. I invite and encourage you to continue your support of St. Mary’s through our online giving tool called WeShare. WeShare has implemented the safest security standards for online transac-tions and your privacy will be protected at all times. You will be able to set up one-time or recurring donations and choose when and how to give to any of our different collections. You will also be able to view your complete, accurate financial records at any time during the year. Sign up on our parish website www.stmarysparish.org If you have any questions about WeShare, please do not hesitate to call Kerry at the parish office at 508-845-6341.

THANK-YOU.

“And they were all filled with Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled

them to proclaim.” (Acts 2:4) Dear friends in Christ, Our mission as the Catholic Church relies on our ability to proclaim -to communicate- the Good News of salvation. Pen-tecost reminds us that we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to get out from behind closed doors and to have the courage to share God’s love with others by our words and our deeds. I am sure it has occurred to you as it has to me that recently we have been living our lives like the Apostles who were locked away in the upper room after Jesus ascended into heaven. Public safety measures have not only encouraged “stay at home” measures but prohibited gathering as a com-munity to be fed by the Word of God and the Blessed Sacra-ment. Now, while following proper precautions, we are be-ginning to gather responsibly as a community. What kept us feeling like we were part of a parish family while we were isolated? Communications: emails, social media, websites, videos, conference calls, even bulletins and letters in the mail; all served as means by which we combatted social and spiritual isolation and by which we were at least fed by the Word of God while fasting from the Eucharist. Next weekend I invite you to participate in the nationwide Catholic Communications Campaign. Half of that collec-tion is used to support the national office whose voice repre-sents the Church in the national media and provides interdi-ocesan communications. The remainder serves as an im-portant part of a multi-faceted funding for our local commu-nications which provide, among other things, a framework for parish and diocesan-wide email, websites, online and ca-ble Masses and local representation in secular news outlets. Had it not been for the Communications Ministry set in place nearly three years ago, it would have been very difficult for us to have been so connected and informed throughout this pandemic. In the “New Normal” of parish and diocesan life, we will be stronger still, thanks to improved social communi-cations. Please accept my sincere thanks for any contribution you can make for the Catholic Communications Campaign in your parish collection on the weekend of June 7th, or online at worcesterdiocese.org. My fervent prayer this Pentecost is that the Holy Spirit will bestow on each of us “the joys that never end.” With every prayerful best wish, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, Bishop Robert J. McManus Bishop of Worcester
