September Letter
Dear all, September is always a time for new beginnings, new uniforms, new hopes and aspirations as the children will be returning to school, students will be preparing for the new academic term and everyone else is beginning to pack away the summer clothes and prepare for the colder season to come…(maybe with not much enthusiasm!). And we look back on a varied summer and washout August…well, up to when I am writing this….holiday, treats, and days out are in our minds. Bookings for Christmas meals are being advertised already as our year just marches on. I have tried each day this summer, whenever I have heard birdsong, to count a blessing and add it to the last one.. We all have so much to be thankful for and we should always make the most of every single day ! There is also much going on in the church, so look out for them in this magazine. Harvest Festival is on 29
th September and we are asking for food,
household and personal things to go to our local Foodbank. So, as the evenings draw in and the season of mellow fruitfulness arrives, why not join us at Harvest to thank God for our many gifts, and to treasure what we have. Autumn blessings! Bethx

HERITAGE WEEKEND
This year our Heritage Weekend is on Friday, Saturday and Sunday 13th, 14th and 15th September as part of the national Heritage Weekend.
The church and/or grounds will be open from 10am till 4pm Friday and Saturday and from 1pm to 4.15pm on Sunday
The Weekend will close with an Organ recital at 3.15pm - see below
One of the displays will be of any baptism gowns or photos or both! We are retrieving our Baptism Registers from the Chester Archives.
Linking in with that theme, we will be decorating the church with all white flowers
So, if you would like to help with that, please let Chris or Beth know.
Dave Allan, Allan Corlett and David Mottram will be taking people on tours of the Old Pleasure Grounds in Eastham Woods.
A Special Organ Recital
To mark the completion of the refurbishment of the parish church organ by Jardine’s of
Manchester, there is to be an “opening” recital at the end of the Heritage Weekend on
September 15th at 3.15 pm given by John Hosking.
John is a graduate of the Royal College of Music. His first post was Organ Scholar at
Westminster Abbey for a record three years, giving 20 recitals during that time. He then
became Assistant Cathedral Organist first at Lincoln then Truro and finally St Asaph,
before becoming a freelance organist, conductor and composer based in North Wales.
Much in demand as a recitalist, he appears on several CDs. “Crowning Splendour” was
recorded on the new organ in St Peter’s, Crownhill, Plymouth in 2012. His latest CD,
“Variation”, was recorded at St Asaph Cathedral. He made his recital debut at Notre
Dame, Paris, in 2015.
John will be able to demonstrate the full potential of our restored three-manual organ
in a wide-ranging programme, producing the brighter sounds of a cleaned-up instru-
ment and a variety of additional colours from the new specification.
Once again, I thank all those who worked so hard to raise the funds for the necessary
overhaul of the organ and also all those who donated, some very generously indeed.
This recital is the culmination of that huge effort followed by the superb skill of the or-
gan-builders in their work to give us an organ worthy of the parish church. It will there-
fore be a very special occasion and one not to be missed. I hope to see you there.

Confirmation
It was planned for Bishop Willy to preside at our Confirmation
service on 22 September 2019 but, sadly, following the death of
his wife in July and her funeral last month, he will be away in the
Solomon Islands.
It is hoped to arrange a new date for the Confirmation on Bishop
Willy’s return and we look forward to having him with us in due
course.

The Merseybeat Sound returns again for its annual memorial service and live music to remember all those who contributed in any way in creating our much loved Merseybeat 1960’s music.

8th Sept The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary In both eastern and western Churches, Mary has always been held as pre-eminent among all the saints. The unique, extraordinary privilege of being the mother of the One who was both God and Man, makes her worthy of special honour. Thomas Aquinas believed she was due hyperdulia, or a veneration that exceeds that of other saints, but is at the same time infinitely below the adoration, or latria, due to God alone.
The gospels of Matthew and Luke give Mary most mention. Luke even tells the story of Jesus’ infancy from Mary’s point of view. Her Song, or Magnificat appears in Luke 1:46-55.
The virginal conception of Christ is clearly stated in the gospels. But after Jesus’ birth, Mary fades quietly into the background. During Jesus’ public life, she is mentioned only occasionally, as at the wedding at Cana. She reappears at the foot of the Cross (John’s Gospel), and is given into John’s care. In the early chapters of Acts, Mary is with the Apos-tles, and received the Holy Spirit along with them on Whitsunday. But her role was not the active one of teaching and preaching.
Mary’s significance grew with the centuries. By the fifth century she was called Theotokos, The Mother of God, and from the seventh century onwards, she was given four festivals: the Presentation in the Temple (2nd February), the Annunciation (25th March), the Assump-tion (15th August) and her Nativity (8th September).
Marian devotion has played an enormous role in the church down the years. Mary has been the object of countless prayers, accredited with performing many miracles, and the subject of thousands of artistic endeavours. She has had hundreds of chapels or parish churches named after her. During the Reformation many images of Mary were destroyed. The Second Vatican Council 1962 made an extended statement on her, stressing her com-plete dependence on her Son, and regarding her as a model of the Church.
Principal Marian shrines of today include Lourdes (France), Fatima (Portugal), Walsingham (England), Loreto (Italy), Czesochowa (Poland) and Guadalupe (Mexico).
29th Sept Michael and All Angels
Michael is an archangel, whose name means ‘who is like unto God?’ He makes various appearances throughout the Bible, from the book of Daniel to the Book of Revelation. In Daniel, he is ‘one of the princes’ of the heavenly host, and the special guardian of Israel. In Revelation, he is the principal fighter of the heavenly battle against the devil.
From early times, Michael’s cult was strong in the British Isles. Churches at Malmesbury (Wiltshire), Clive (Gloucestershire) and Stanmer (East Sussex) were dedicated to him. Bede mentions him. St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall was believed to commemorate a vision there in the 8th century. By the end of the Middle Ages, Michael had 686 English churches dedicated to him.
In art Michael is often depicted as slaying the dragon, as in the 14th century East Anglican Psalters, or in Epstein’s famous sculpture at Coventry cathedral. Or he is found (in medie-val art) as weighing souls, as at Chaldon (Surrey), Swalcliffe (Oxon.), Eaton Bishop (Hereford and Worcester), and Martham in Suffolk. Michael’s most famous shrine in western Europe is Mont-Saint-Michel, where a Benedictine abbey was founded in the 10th century.
The ‘All Angels’ bit of this feast-day was added in 1969 when Gabriel and Raphael were included in with Michael.

Calling all St Mary’s Ladies
The Ladies Night Out is for all the ladies who worship at St Mary’s, the Church Centre and at St Peter’s and occasionally those who don’t but have friends that do. After last year’s meal and by popular request I have provi-sionally booked about 50 places at Bromborough Golf Club for the night of Thursday 21st November 2019, 7pm for 7. 30 pm. Look out for the menus and booking forms towards the middle of September. Please fill in your menu choices when you get them and let me have the money and your choic-es as soon as possible by the 1st week in November. We usually add £1 to the cost for tips but that is optional. If the forms have run out please let me know and I can run more off.

Tour of Britain Cycling Race
On Wednesday 11th September, the Tour of Britain cy-
cling race is coming to Wirral and Cheshire. This is the
biggest race that our country sees and it will pass down the
Hooton Road through Willaston towards Neston. (The bad
news is that a lot of roads in the area are likely to be
closed (details not yet available). The actual race will probably go through
Willaston in a flash at around 11.39am.

could benefit from the gift of a new garden and are seeking nominations for the series.
Over the years they have helped deserving individuals and families who are a true inspira-
tion to their local and wider communities, who through circumstances beyond their con-
trol need help with their garden, or just a big ‘thank you’. They may have given up their
time for charitable causes or their local community, showed resilience having been hit by
tragedy or be one of Britain’s unsung heroes. If you can think of anyone for whom a newly
transformed garden could change their life for the better this may be an opportunity.

St Mary’s Church Guides
A small group of dedicated people open our beautiful church for visitors from late
May to the Heritage Weekend in September on Wednesday and Thursday after-
noon between 2-4pm.
To enable us to keep doing this we urgently need more people to join us, even if
you can only spare a couple of afternoons a month it would help us. We have plen-
ty of notes for guidance. It is a wonderful opportunity to spend a couple of hours in
a peaceful and beautiful place with the added bonus of the chance to meet new peo-
ple, new friends and even visitors from all over the world. If you are interested

New Lunch group volunteers needed at the Delamere Centre
Sadly, the current group of volunteers who run the luncheon club at the centre are stop-
ping on the 8th of July 2019. The club has been run by this group for the past 9 years
and they have done an amazing job building a really successful luncheon club. They will
be missed greatly by all the diners! The luncheon club normally runs every second Mon-

of volunteers). If possible, we would love to recruit a new team of volunteers to take
over the luncheon club from September 2019. We will of course need someone who
enjoys cooking, servers, someone to do the shopping and someone who likes doing the
dishes. We will pay for new recruits to do a Level 2 in Food Safety and Hygiene for Cater-
ing and support them where necessary.

EASTHAM SAINTS—Gone but not forgotten
Bill Hughes
Bill wasn’t a member of a church until his wife Daisy died. Joan and Brian Catherall invited him for Sunday dinner to help him after she died and 15 years later he was still enjoying his dinner with them but this time it was after Church which he started to attend with them.
Bill was Joan Catherall’s uncle. I first met him when he was taking a bunch of roses to Joan from his own garden. At the time the vicar, Ron Worsley was look-ing for someone to look after the Churchyard and it wasn’t long before Bill filled the role and eventually became verger.
Joan says that Bill was a very intelligent man but he didn’t smile a lot. However, he had a very dry sense of humour. On one occasion he was stopped by the po-lice in Bromborough for overtaking a bus when he shouldn’t have done. Bill was
well into his 80’s at the time. The police asked for his details, when he was born and so on. When Bill replied, “I was born in 1912”, the policeman said, “Oh! That’s the year the Titanic sunk”. Quick as a flash Bill remarked," You’re not going to book me for that as well”
In April 1992 on Maundy Thursday he was presented with Royal Maundy Money at Chester Cathe-dral. Bill was a lovely gentle man and worked hard for God in his own quiet way. He often ferried people to and from church when they could no longer attend under their own steam. Bill used to bring Mrs Sharp to church when she moved to a Nursing Home in Beb-ington and afterwards he would drive her down to the Ferry to sit and watch the river. Bill died in 1998

St. Peter’s Sunday Lunches
The idea for these came about as there are quite a few people living alone at St Pe-ter’s and, talking, realised most did not make Sunday lunch. We thought it would be a good idea, every so often, to go for Sunday lunch after our service. To date, we have had three Sunday lunches going alternate months to the Argyle. We manage to push tables together so we can sit at one long table and there is much chat and laughter. Anyone is welcome to join us and you do not have to live alone to come!
