Do I Know You? What a frightening thought, that the master would reject us and deny that he knows us. To think that we would have done our best to live a good life, only to meet him at the narrow door and be denied admission! Yet many of us think we have it all sussed. Like those in today’s Gospel, we think we are surely safe. But there is a certain complacency in the voices that plead to the master ‘ We once ate
and drank in your company; you taught in our streets’- as if it is enough to have a passing acquaintance with Jesus. Those are not the words of someone who really knows the master and deserves to enter his house. We may think we won’t be denied eternal salvation because we say our prayers, go to Mass every Sunday, and try our best to live good and holy lives. Wouldn’t it be disappointing after all that if we turned into someone that Christ does not recognise?

Monday the 15th The Feast of Our Lady’s Assumption into heaven, the Pilgrimage Season opened at Our Lady’ s Island. This year the theme is “Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s Mercy”. This opening phrase of “Misericordiae
Vultus” by Pope Francis in effect sums up the ethos of our Diocesan Marian Shrine; while at the Island we walk in Our Lady’s Company the face of Christ is
always discernible through the beauty of the surroundings and most especially in the ebb and flow of Island Liturgy. His face is always the Father’s mercy, in the Confessional, in the Breaking of the Bread of God’s Word and in the Anointing of The sick, in the Eucharistic presence, in the kindness and welcome of out hosting parish, in the infinite procession of
footsteps whosejourney across the centuries is accompanied by the Rosary which in the words of St Pope John XX111 is “the compendium of the Gospels”.
The year of Mercy opened on the Feast of Our Lady's’ Immaculate Conception. On that day
the door at Our Lady’s Island Church was proclaimed to be a door of mercy. During the oncoming season I invite all who can to pass through the Door into the heart of God’s Mercy;
the presence of Christ in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the healing presence of Christ in the Eucharist. I ask all to pass the causeway onto the Island where He will lead us to the green
pastures beside the still waters.
Priests who hear confessions are called by Pope Francis right into the heart of Christ: “Every confessor must accept the faithful as the father in the parable of the prodigal son: a father who
runs out to meet his son despite the fact that he has squandered away his inheritance. Confessors are called to embrace the repentant son who comes back home and to
express the joy of having him back again….Confessors are called to be a sign of the primacy of mercy always, everywhere and in every situation no matter what”.

Isaiah calls the people to look forward to a time when Jerusalem will be the glory of the nations. The dispersed children of God will come on pilgrimage to Jerusalem to witness the glory of God. Not only will they find Jerusalem to be their spiritual home, but some of them– unusually!- will be chosen for ministry as priests and Levites. God’s salvation will reach beyond the borders of Israel.
The author of the Letter to the Hebrews sets out to offer a way of understanding suffering. It can be understood as a form of correction, God’s way of’ training’ his sons and daughters whom he loves. Just as any parent would ‘train’ a child by imposing some form of sanction, so too does God allow us to suffer so that we can grow and bear fruit in terms of ‘peace and goodness.’
A question from an anonymous person provides the launching pad for what follows: ‘Will there be only a few saved?’ The answer begins with a wisdom saying (‘the narrow door’), followed by a parable (‘knocking on the door’), followed by an apocalyptic description (‘men from east and west..’), and concludes with another wisdom saying (‘last will be first’). The answer goes further than the question: the issue is not how many but who! The answer given by Jesus shifts the conversation away from numbers to a teaching on who can be saved. The exclusion of those who are not known to the master of the house suggests that only those who are known to the master may enter. This implies the primacy of relationship for salvation.
