Saint Martha’s Story Martha, Mary, and their brother Lazarus were evi-dently close friends of Jesus. He came to their home simply as a welcomed guest, rather than as one celebrating the conversion of a sinner like Zacchaeus or one unceremoniously received by a suspicious Pharisee. The sisters feel free to call on Jesus at their brother’s death, even though a re-turn to Judea at that time seems almost certain death. No doubt Martha was an active sort of per-son. On one occasion, she prepares the meal for Jesus and possibly his fellow guests and forth-rightly states the obvious: All hands should pitch in to help with the dinner. Yet, as biblical scholar Father John McKenzie points out, she need not be rated as an “unrecollected activist.” The evangelist is emphasizing what our Lord said on several oc-casions about the primacy of the spiritual: “… [D]o not worry about your life, what you will eat [or drink], or about your body, what you will wear…. But seek first the kingdom [of God] and his right-eousness” (Matthew 6:25b, 33a);“One does not live by bread alone” (Luke 4:4b); “Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteous-ness…” (Matthew 5:6a). Martha’s great glory is her simple and strong statement of faith in Jesus after her brother’s death. “Jesus told her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?’ She said to him, ‘Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world’” (John 11:25-27).

Saint Ignatius of Loyola

Founder of the Society of Jesus, Ignatius of Loyola, like Francis of

Assisi, had a conversion experience while recuperating from a serious ill-ness. Being a military man, the Rule of Life that Saint Ignatius wrote for his followers shows the discipline and rigor of a soldier, but a soldier of faith with the mercy and compassion of the Gospel.

Reminder On Saturday, August 10th and Sunday, August 11th, the church will have as its guest the missionary sisters Sister Mar-yann and Sister Carmen who will be shar-ing their experiences as missionaries with us.

Spiritual Bonsai The art of developing the potential of a seed in small pot re-quires a determined, persevering, and patient character. Our live, like seeds, are in development, in a society that seeks new

knowledge about people and their environments knowledge also requires attention and dedication, which clashes with the social tendency toward quick answers or fleeting and personal interest. In the face of this, let us re-member the words of Jesus: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away” (Mt24:35). As farmers take care of their plants until the time of harvest and the potter shapes a clay pot, transforming the life of a human being into the image of Jesus Christ is an arduous task, the result of which inspires testimony and praise. We must obey God at all time, because He knows when it is neces-sary to let the wheat grow with the weeds and how to transform clay into something beautiful and useful, because “the one who began a good work in your will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus” (Phil 1:6). Just as removing the weeds will hurt the wheat, sometimes, God does not take away the painful or questionable circumstances of life; nevertheless, like a clay pot, He transforms us to resist the difficult times. In this way He strengthens us, knowing that when the time of harvest arrives, we will be distinguished by our fruits of blessing; then, at the end of the process, “the righteous will shine like the sun” (Mt 13:43). This also implies that faith can grow alongside worldly things, but their fruits will distinguish them in their own time. To be continuing……

Continuara ……
