This Month’s Liturgy at a Glance
The Sundays of Easter gradually offer explanation of the
mysteries of faith and discipleship of Christ, to those who have
received the sacrament of initiation during Easter and to all the
Christians who have renewed them in the Easter Vigil. The readings
help to experience the power of the resurrection of Christ, with
the reflection on the needs of the community, the life of the Good
Shepherd who gives his life for his sheep, and the call to follow
Christ, the only voice that deserves to be heard and followed
beyond the tumultuous voices of the world. The readings on the
feast of the Ascension focus on the mission of Christians to
proclaim, denounce, build, and spread the Good News with firm faith
in the promise of the coming of the Spirit. May is also the Marian
month par excellence. The customs of the May altars, the offering
of flowers, and the coronation of the Virgin offer many
catechetical opportunities, for children as well as adults. The
Argentinean community celebrates the feast of it patroness, Our
Lady of Lujan. Likewise, we have the feast days of Our Lady of
Fatima and Mary Help of Christians. The celebration of Easter is
already filled with content richness; however, there are also
saints and important popular observances. The celebration of Saint
Isidore the Farmer, patron of the farm workers, and Saint Mariana
de Jesus de Paredes, the first Ecuadorian saint, are also
significant moments in this month’s liturgy and prayers. In
addition, the celebration of First Communions and Confirmations
during the season of Easter will capture most of the attention. The
influxes of relatives, who perhaps do not visit the temple in other
times of the year, offer a good opportunity for evangelization.
DIOCESE OF PATERSON May 2019
Dear Friends in Christ, This month our parishes are asked to
take up the Peter’s Pence Collection. This collection is a unique
opportunity for Catholics in our Diocese and worldwide to come
together to help alleviate the plight of those who suffer and are
marginalized. For example, the Peter’s Pence collection helped our
brothers and sisters in Haiti as they faced difficult challenges
from the 2010 earthquake and the destruction caused by Hurricane
Matthew in 2016. Pope Francis calls each of us to see each person
as an individual “infinitely loved by the Father, an image of God,
a brother or sister redeemed by Jesus Christ” (Apostolic
Exhortation Gaudete et Exsultate, no. 98). By supporting the
Peter’s Pence collection, you help our Church respond to the Gospel
imperative to show mercy and grace to those in need. Please be as
generous as possible when this collection is taken up in your

Un Vistazo a la Liturgia de este Mes
Los domingos de Pascua ofrecen gradualmente una explicación de
los misterios de la fe y el discipulado de Cristo, a aquellos que
han recibido el sacramento de iniciación durante la Pascua y a
todos los cristianos que los han renovado en la Vigilia Pascual.
Las lecturas ayudan a experimentar el poder de la resurrección de

primera santa ecuatoriana, también son momentos importantes en la
liturgia y las oraciones de este mes. Además, la celebración de

Mayo 2019 Queridos amigos en Cristo, Este mes se le pide a
nuestras parroquias que tomen la colecta de Peter's Pence. Esta
colecta es una oportunidad única para que los católicos de nuestra
Diócesis y de todo el mundo se unan para ayudar a aliviar la
difícil situación de quienes sufren y son marginados. Por ejemplo,
la colecta de Peter's Pence ayudó a nuestros hermanos y hermanas en

Absence or Active Presence? This month of May we celebrate the
Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, the return of Jesus Christ
to the
Father. The Ascension of Jesus must not be seen only as his
physical absence from the world, but as one
where his presence is different than when he was among the
apostles who saw Jesus, touched him, and ate
with him. Our experience with the Risen Lord is similar to that
of many people who have not seen him with
their own eyes, but have real contact with Jesus Christ through
faith, the sacraments, prayer, and in the life
of the Catholic Church. Our experience of life in the sacraments
should lead us to spread the Gospel to the
world; in this manner people will encounter Jesus Christ,
through the life of the Church. We must be clear
that Jesus Christ will always be near us and with the same
redeeming love that he had for the apostles, only
in a different manner: in Spirit and Truth. As followers of
Christ, we cannot sit with our eyes towards
heaven, because the Ascension is not only about Jesus; it is
also about every man and woman of faith. Let us
remember that where Jesus is, is where we all hope to be. We
must keep in mind that before his Ascension
he said; “I am going to prepare a way for you” (Jn 14:2).
Although during our earthly pilgrimage we follow
different paths, we must be sure that our final destiny is the
same: to be united with God, the Father, the
Son, and the Holy Spirit. This is how Jesus Christ did it; he
returned to the Father and sent the Holy Spirit,
and in this way, he is close to us. The followers of Jesus
Christ cannot remain seated with our eyes fixed on
the sky. Our duty is to be witnesses and announcers of the fair
causes and solidarity that Jesus Christ began
here on earth and continue building, with help from the Holy
Spirit, the will of God. This is not the
responsibility of one or two persons, but of the entire Church.
We must not sit and wait. As witnesses and
announcers of the Word of God, we have to do something. “You
will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all
Judea and Samaria, and until the ends of the Earth” (Ac 1:8). It
is evident that Ascension is not to remain
seated and turn your back on the community where we live. We are
called to know the experience of Jesus
Christ from our own life and through the life of the Church.
Just as the Scriptures remind us of our
commitment, the Vatican Council II, through its 16 published
documents, invites us to continue the reign of
God. “The laity are gathered together in the People of
God...Whoever they are they are called upon, as living
members, to expend all their energy for the growth of the Church
and its continuous sanctification, since
this very energy is a gift of the Creator and a blessing of the
Redeemer” (Lumen gentium 33). Finally,
perhaps some people might perceive the Ascension of Jesus Christ
as his physical departure from our sight,
but not from our lives. For everything already stated, the
Ascension is not about the absence of Jesus Christ,
but about the new spiritual presence of Jesus Christ in every
man and woman wherever they are, through
the Holy Spirit and the life of the Catholic Church.

¿Ausencia o presencia activa?
Este mes de mayo celebramos la solemnidad de la Ascensión del
Señor, el regreso de Jesucristo al Padre. La Ascensión de Jesús no
debe ser vista solo como su ausencia física del mundo, sino como
una presencia diferente a la de Jesús cuando estuvo entre los
apóstoles que vieron a Jesús, lo tocaron y comieron con él. Nuestra
experiencia con el Señor resucitado es similar a la de muchas
personas que no lo han visto con sus propios ojos, pero que tienen
un contacto real con Jesucristo a través de la fe, los sacramentos,
la oración y la vida de la Iglesia católica. Nuestra experiencia de
vida en los sacramentos nos debe llevar a difundir el Evangelio al
mundo; De esta manera, la gente se encontrará con Jesucristo, a
través de la vida de la Iglesia. Debemos tener claro que Jesucristo
siempre estará cerca de nosotros y con el mismo amor redentor que
tuvo para los apóstoles, solo de una manera diferente: en Espíritu
y en Verdad. Como seguidores de Cristo, no podemos sentarnos con
nuestros ojos hacia el cielo, porque la Ascensión no es solo acerca
de Jesús; También se trata de cada hombre y mujer de fe. Recordemos
que donde está Jesús, es donde todos esperamos estar. Debemos tener
en cuenta que antes de su Ascensión dijo: “Voy a preparar un camino
para ti” (Jn 14: 2). Aunque durante nuestra peregrinación terrenal
seguimos caminos diferentes, debemos estar seguros de que nuestro
destino final es el mismo: estar unidos con Dios, el Padre, el Hijo
y el Espíritu Santo. Así lo hizo Jesucristo; regresó al Padre y
envió al Espíritu Santo, y de esta manera, está cerca de nosotros.
Los seguidores de Jesucristo no pueden permanecer sentados con
nuestros ojos fijos en el cielo. Nuestro deber es ser testigos y
anunciadores de las causas justas y la solidaridad que Jesucristo
comenzó aquí en la tierra y continuar construyendo, con la ayuda
del Espíritu Santo, la voluntad de Dios. Esto no es responsabilidad
de una o dos personas, sino de toda la Iglesia. No debemos
sentarnos y esperar. Como testigos y anunciadores de la Palabra de
Dios, tenemos que hacer algo. "Ustedes serán mis testigos en
Jerusalén, en toda Judea y Samaria, y hasta los confines de la
Tierra" (Hechos 1: 8). Es evidente que la Ascensión no es
permanecer sentado y dar la espalda a la comunidad donde vivimos.
Estamos llamados a conocer la experiencia de Jesucristo desde
nuestra propia vida y a través de la vida de la Iglesia. Así como
las Escrituras nos recuerdan nuestro compromiso, el Concilio
Vaticano II, a través de sus 16 documentos publicados, nos invita a
continuar el reino de Dios. "Los laicos están reunidos en el Pueblo
de Dios ... Quienesquiera que sean, son llamados, como miembros
vivos, a gastar toda su energía para el crecimiento de la Iglesia y
su santificación continua, ya que esta energía es un don de El
Creador y una bendición del Redentor ”(Lumen gentium 33).
Finalmente, quizás algunas personas puedan percibir la Ascensión de
Jesucristo como su alejamiento físico de nuestra vista, pero no de
nuestras vidas. Para todo lo que ya se ha dicho, la Ascensión no se
trata de la ausencia de Jesucristo, sino de la nueva presencia
espiritual de Jesucristo en cada hombre y mujer, dondequiera que
estén, a través del Espíritu Santo y la vida de la Iglesia
Católica.
