So when will the Church return to public liturgies? “We are keen to reopen the churches and resume public worship as soon as reasonably possible. The scenario that nobody wants is to re-open churches for public worship only to find out the virus isn’t really contained, and a bishop has to re-impose re- strictions. In Brisbane, Archbishop Coleridge was asked whether creative solutions had been considered to help Catholics start celebrating together again. “That people are hungry for the Eucharist and the gathering of the community is certain. “But it also seems clear that the spirits of pastors and people have not flagged, and that’s surely the fruit of a faith in the Risen Lord whom nothing and no-one can shut down.” April 30, 2020 By Mark Bowling 2nd/3rd May 2020 4th Sunday of Easter Year A

St Mary’s Catholic Parish Warwick Vision Statement

To live the Gospel by celebrating together, sustaining a welcoming parish

and serving Jesus Christ through the joys and sorrows of our wider

community.

When will the ‘physical’ Church resume in Brisbane archdiocese?

So when will the Church return to public liturgies? “We are keen to reopen the churches and resume public worship as soon as reasonably possible. That will happen in stages,” Archbishop Coleridge said. “A first stage will be opening the churches for private prayer, perhaps for some time of the day and ensuring that safeguarding precautions are respected. “Then there may be public Masses but in smaller groups with the precautions again respected. “None of this is as simple as it sounds, because churches used for either private prayer or smaller Masses will have to be sanitised afterwards, and that is quite a task, presuming even that there is enough sanitiser available for the purpose.” In the meantime, Archbishop Coleridge believes live-steaming is proving helpful to many. “It isn’t the same as the actual celebration of the Eucharist, but it’s the best on offer at the moment,” Archbishop Coleridge said. “Certainly there’s been a lot of energy and creativity, and that has meant, at times, unexpected blessings which we can take into the future whatever lies on the other side of the crisis. “One of those, perhaps, is a new form of family prayer which has diminished considerably since the days when the family rosary was a big thing in Catholic homes.” In each diocese, it is the bishop who decides when to re-open churches for public worship, and it’s a vexed decision for each to make since establishing dates and protocols depends on local conditions. Bell Ringing Some parishioners have asked why the Church bell is rung each day

at 12noon.

* There is a long history of ringing church bells in the Christian

tradition.|

* They are commonly rung to mark the beginning of a church service.

* Traditionally they were also rung at three different times a day as a

call to prayer(eg. Angelus) and a reminder of God’s presence.

* Bells were also rung to warn villagers of any danger or at a time of emergency.

* I think that in this time of emergency the bell reminds us of the imminent danger and also

highlights how we unite in solidarity to remember the deceased and the sick in prayer.

* Bells also announce festive occasions such as the Risen Christ at Easter. It is also then an

assurance of Christian hope.

STAY CONNECTED In recent weeks, we have maintained contact via email and sms

messaging. This has been made possible by means of a software program and has enabled us

to advise of resources that are available online. These resources can now be sourced

directly from the parish website https://www.stmarysparishwarwick.org.au/

You will find links to live-streamed masses and prayer sites and free access to the Catholic

Leader online.

This information is also available in the parish bulletin. Click on this link. https://

www.stmarysparishwarwick.org.au/uploads/5/8/4/9/58497861/26th.pdf

I will continue to send links to the readings and the bulletin via email and sms.

We are also aware that some parishioners are not familiar with the use of technology. Some

might not be connected to the internet. So, we are checking our data list for phone numbers

and, members of the parish council will make contact by phone. This won’t be fool-proof

and there is always a chance that someone might be overlooked. If so, please make contact

via the Parish phone number 4661 1033.

We would like to broaden this person-to-person contact by offering suggestions such as

sharing the bulletin with the elderly in the neighbourhood (please observe the distancing

rules). Please also refer to the flyer on page 5 of the bulletin.

REFLECTION

National Prayer for Drought

Eternal God, in wisdom & love You created our

earth to sustain us & give us life. We turn to You

in faith, hope & love, asking You to look with

favour on our drought-stricken land, on our

starving animals, on our failing crops.

Strengthen, sustain & give new heart to our

farmers & all who are affected by drought; be with

those who support them. In Your loving

providence, send abundant rain & restore our

parched earth. Father of all compassion, hear our

prayer, through Jesus Christ Your Son, in Whom

the promise of new life has dawned, & through

the power of the Holy Spirit, the Lord the giver of

life; Renew the face of the earth. Our Lady of the

Southern Cross, Mary Help of Christians—Pray

for us. St Mary of the Cross MacKillop—Pray for

us. Amen.

In the Gospel of John, we do not find parables in the traditional sense. They are not a literary device that John employs, but this text is as close an approximation to a parable as we have. The contrast he draws between the shepherd who enters the fold by the gate and the thieves and brigands who seek to enter another way is really about leadership. There are good leaders and bad leaders. The good leader of God’s people must come to them through Jesus, who is the gate. The thieves and brigands will only lead the people to fear and confusion, where they will be scattered. Perhaps John is addressing a situation in his commu-nity where those who are seeking leadership are not following the voice of Jesus but seeking their own aggrandisement or fol-lowing their own agenda. Such people will ultimately lead the flock to destruction, but Jesus gives life in abundance to all who know his voice and follow him as shepherd.

What false voices can be heard in our world today?

What message do they proclaim that is different from the

message of Jesus?

What are the things that make it difficult to resist the false

voices in our world?

PRAYER FOR PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY

Almighty and all-merciful God, lover of the human race, healer of all our wounds, in whom there is no shadow of death, save us in this time of crisis; grant wisdom and courage to our leaders; watch over all medical people as they tend the sick and work for a cure; stir in us a sense of solidarity beyond all isolation; if our doors are closed, let our hearts be open. By the power of your love destroy the virus of fear, that hope may never die and the light of Easter, the triumph of life, may shine upon us and the whole world. Through Jesus Christ, the Lord risen from the dead, who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen. Holy Mary, health of the sick, pray for us. St Joseph, guardian of us all, pray for us.
