Thank you for reading this Handbook on Sports processes and procedures at St Mary’s College. It has been
produced to facilitate communication between students’ parents, coaches, managers and school
leadership. This will ensure that the focus in sport is on participation and enjoyment and that students are
supported to reach the level they are capable of, and in a way that incorporates our Mercy Values.
St Mary’s College views extra-curricular activities as an essential part of forming Mercy Women of the 21st
Century, and we offer a holistic vision for our students. We are focused on providing activities that
enhance the wellbeing of all while building relationships with teachers and adults who have a positive
impact on the lives of our young women.
Sports is an extra-curricular activity and receives no government funding. We rely on parents’
contributions and financial support while having measures in place to ensure sport is accessible to all,
regardless of financial circumstances. Our Parent, Teachers and Friends Association, the Past Pupils
organisation, Board of Trustees and Board of Proprietors all provide support through various means and I
would encourage you to support their activities that will benefit our students.
We have high levels of participation in sport with over 60% of students taking part in some form of sport.
There is a great deal of success up to Representative level and in 2018 we have had 9 New Zealand
representatives.
No matter what level your daughter or team participates in, I would like to wish them success and
enjoyment as they reap the benefits of involvement in a sporting activity.
Yours in Mercy
Bernadette Stockman Principal

Through the direction of the Board of Directors, Board of Trustees and support of our PTFA, St Mary’s College
has seen significant investment in sporting facilities and sports staff.
Our focus for 2019 and beyond is to increase the number of students taking part in physical activity. We offer
a wide variety of sports to meet the needs of our students. We will also support our top teams and individual
athletes, to enable them to be competitive at regional and national level.
The success of sport at St Mary’s College is highly dependent on the volunteer support from our community
by way of coaches, managers, and support with fundraisers to enrich the community experience.
Pesio Matiseni Director of Sport

Regulations Cancellations Team managers will be contacted once notification of cancellations have been received and will inform all team members. Last minute cancellations will be advised via a notification on the school app. Registration Fees All registration fees must be paid before a student can participate. Once a student is named in a team, she is committed to that team. Withdrawing her after being named will result in a forfeit of the registration fees. Uniforms Where a uniform is provided, the uniform must be returned in good condition, at the conclusion of the program. Any uniform not returned or returned damaged will result in a $60 charge being added to the students account. School PE Uniforms, tracksuits and netball skirts can be purchased from Elizabeth Michael Ltd. (www.elizabethmichael.co.nz/) Number of Sports A student may only take part in two regular sports per winter or summer season. There is no limit on the amount of one day events. Playing up and Premier selection Students must play in their own age group and not play up in a higher aged team or competition. Students in Year 9 or below are not eligible for selection into a Premier team. Exceptional circumstances will be considered with the final decision being made by the Director of Sport and/or Principal. Tournaments To be eligible to attend multi-day tournaments, student attendance rate must be at a minimum of 90%. Tournament approval is at the discretion of the Deans, Director of Sport and/or Principal. All Sports fees must be paid before a student can be entered for multi-day tournaments. Fundraising All fundraising proposals must be received by the Director of Sport at least two months prior to any intended fundraising activity. The Director of Sport will liaise with the Development Manager to ensure the activity aligns with our Mercy Values and Special Character.
24 | P a g e
Grants/Funding Requests for grants or funding may be sought for assistance with tournaments, equipment or other purposes. Any request must be for the benefit of groups rather than individuals. The request must be submitted to the Director of Sport at least three months prior to funding being required. The Director of Sport will liaise with the Principal and Development Manager, and a decision will be made as to whether an application will be carried out on your behalf. All decisions are final and are at the discretion of these parties. Prize Giving The annual Sports Awards evening recognises outstanding players in each sport. This is held annually, and award recipients will be notified at the start of Term 3. Individual Codes may decide to hold their own informal prizegiving and students are expected to attend as part of signing up to a Sport. Volunteering We would like to hear from you if you would like to volunteer in any capacity; coach, manager, transport, parent group. It is a school requirement that all our coaches and managers are police vetted. Where payment is offered for a coach, a contract will be offered and once all parties agree, the contract must be signed before any duties are carried out.
Contract All students that wish to play sports must complete a player contract signed by parent and student.
