190 ST. MARY’S COLLEGE ANNUAL 2006

Rory Moore came to TY in St. Mary’sfrom London in September 2004. Thechange was difficult for him –especially as he had recently sufferedthe loss of his closest friend in afreakish accident.

One of Rory’s close relatives remarkedthat Rory was “popular, he wassensitive and loving, he was a doer forothers, especially his less privileged

peers; he was non-judgmental aboutthem and kind towards them”.

Suffering and death are mysteriousenough, but when death is so suddenfor someone so young, it is thebereaved who suffer from the tragedyof it. Rory’s death has shocked andsaddened us all: especially his Mumand Dad, his sisters, his relatives, andall his friends. We offer them oursincere sympathy.

There is no such thing as death withouttears, even for the Christian. A youngand sudden death makes us ask: why?Why did it have to happen?

He returned to London after oneacademic year in St. Mary’s, moving toa new school there, where he hadsettled down well since Christmas.

The sudden accidental death of Rory, ina fall from a high window in a friend’shouse, has shocked us all, especially hispeers in 4th Year. He is buried beside hisfriend in London. May we one daycelebrate with him at the banquet ofeternal life.

Fr. J. Flavin, CSSp

ST. MARY’S COLLEGE ANNUAL 2006 191

The 2005/2006 academic year, onceagain, saw an increase in the number ofpupils involved in Scouting.

As in previous years, we had a full Cubpack made up of boys in 4th and 5thclass, in the Junior School. Max Smyth, who ran the Cubs for the last six years, retired, during the year, following awork move to Cork. The Cub pack isnow run by Katie Mooney and StephenHutton, together with their threeassistant Cub leaders.

The two Scout troops, (the 6th and 7thScout troops) continue to do well withover 55 members (boys in 6th class to4th year). The Scout troops are run byDaniel Carvill (6th) and Gavin Fogarty(7th) and they are assisted by eightother Scout leaders.

We were delighted to be able to re-open our Venturer group lastSeptember. It has been a number ofyears since we last had Venturers in St.Mary’s. The Venturer group is run byLiz Elliott and two other Venturerleaders. The Venturer group currentlyhas twelve members.

This year our Cub pack went onsummer camp in Altringham inManchester. Congratulations to LeoPhelan who was awarded Cub of Camp. The 6th and 7th went on a joint Scoutcamp to Switzerland. The Venturer’sundertook an expedition to Italy andCroatia.

Finally, this year Karl McBrien retired asGroup Leader, having been in chargefor the last seven years. The new leader

6TH TROOP, SUMMER CAMP.

With 3 patrols ably lead by BenShaffrey, John Jones and the combinedbrain power of Odhrán Byrne and BrianBourke, camp was set up to be neverdull. Due to a fault in the train line, toand from Italy, the Swiss had routed alltraffic through the line that happenedto pass directly behind our campsitebut, thankfully, for the first night only!

Our days on site were spent rockclimbing the Alpine slopes, cratestacking, t-shirt printing, having snowfights on glaciers, or having fun downin the local swimming pool. At thepool, the scouts fought to rule theinflatable shark and learned the art ofdiving from the 1 and 5 metre divingboards.

On one of many adventures in thesurrounding mountains, the Alpsreminded us all of its power when agroup from the 6th and 7th battledthrough a thunder and lightning storm

(during which they couldn’t even touchthe mountain side for risk ofelectrocution) to overnight at theFruindehutte at 2,566 metres. It was avery relieved and slightly frazzled groupwhich returned to Kandersteg the nextday. As always, when camping, we weredependent on the weather and, for themost part, we were lucky.

The city of Bern was explored for thesummer camp city visit; bears werephotographed and local cuisine wastried out; in the form of a little knownrestaurant called the Golden Arches.

A hard fought Patrol Competition wasrun throughout camp, with the PantherPatrol emerging victorious on the finalday of competition.

VENTURER, Summer Camp

11 Venture Scouts, 4 leaders, 2countries, 1 goal … the summer campof a lifetime! And, as leaders, we werethere, mostly, to facilitate and helporganise ideas – which the Venturerscame up with. This is the freedom ofVenture Scouting.

This was the last Venture Camp forSection Leader, Liz Elliott and the firstfor Colm Quinn, Brendan Shortt, Shane

Timmons, David Shaffrey, ConorMcGlade, James Mullen, WilliamParkinson, Ruth McCullough, ColetteO’Neill, Eimear Byrne and CatherineEgan.

Italy was the first destination, a sunnycity at the North-Eastern coast, on theborder to Slovenia, called Trieste. Afterthree days of camping with the Italians,we travelled on through the night, across Slovenia, to our main destinationof Pula, on the North-Western coast ofCroatia. The small island-campsite,about three miles off the coast, did notmeet our needs, unfortunately. However, within a day, the perfect sitewas found, on the mainland, and thenfollowed eight days of sun-soakedactivities and fine scouting cuisine. Onenight in Venice concluded the camp –which set very high standards, indeed, for the years to come.

Senior Cup Team Report2005-2006

St. Mary’s 34 – 22 St. Gerard’sOur first Cup match was against astrong St. Gerard’s side, which hadeight players returning from the sidethat had beaten Terenure the yearbefore. Some newspapers had themdown as favourites, as we had only twoplayers from last year’s side returning. With two Irish School’s players, KyleTonnetti (outhalf) and Burschi Wojnar(backrow) we knew this was a team fullof confidence and that we would haveto be on top of our game. Straightfrom the kick off, Cowhey “put snowon it”, as John Wynne would say, and

Shane Timmons sprinted up andsmashed Burschi Wojnar back about 10yards; it certainly set the tone for thegame. Our pack was well on top, securing possession at the rucks andline-out and Cowhey orchestrated thebackline magnificently. Cowhey landeda penalty in the first few minutes andthen, on the 8th minute, Ray Crottyslipped three tackles to score in thecorner. From the touchline, Cowheyconverted. We were putting Gerard’sunder all kinds of pressure. In the 20thminute St. Gerard’s had a scrum fivemetres out, in front of their own posts.Marc McKay and Darran Kennedy droveour scrum forward, which allowedPadraig Lalor to put pressure on theirscrumhalf and, being the scavenger

that he is, he snaffled the ball awayfrom him and went over for a try.Cowhey converted. Then, just beforehalf time, from another scrum, JackBuggy attacked the blindside and steamrolled the Gerard’s fullback (much tothe delight of the St. Mary’s pastpupils). Once again, from the touchline,on fire, Cowhey converted. Just afterhalf time, Cowhey struck anotherpenalty. A few minutes later, we had aline out and decided to go for them upfront. We put together a strong rollingmaul which allowed Eamon Moran toget over the line to make it 34-3 by the51st minute. Unfortunately, from themon, we took our foot off the gas andSt. Gerard’s came back strongly tomake the score at full time 34-22. Thefinal scoreline gave us a lot of food forthought as faced into the next round.

St. Mary’s 13 – 10 CastleknockThat week in training we upped thephysicality and intensity as we wereaware of how big Castelknock’s packwas. All the hype in the media wasabout Brian Collins, the Ireland U19outhalf and Neil Cowhey, the LeinsterU18 outhalf, both of whom had “manof the match” performances in theprevious round and who would comeout on top. Castleknock had someother very good players also, includingthe Ireland U19 No. 8, Tom Walsh andthe Leinster U19 prop Ruaidhri Murphyand backrow Eoin Cummins. We wereall a bit edgy that week at training. Iremember, at a forwards lineoutsession, myself and Slowey getting intoa bit of a scrap, which was probablyquite a positive thing as it got all theforwards into the right frame of mind

for the game. We started off brightly,Cowhey’s out of hand kicking wassuperb – although he did miss a fewshots at goal, including one in front ofthe posts!. Our lineout and scrum werefunctioning well. The game was playedmostly around the halfway line and thetackling from both sides was fierce. Theopening score of the game didn’t comeuntil the 27th minute when Collins gota drop goal. For the last ten minutes ofthe first half Castleknock upped theante. From a Castleknock lineout,Collins received the ball and slippedthrough our defence to score the firsttry of the game. He then converted andCastleknock led 10 – 0 at the break. Athalf time, Mark Sexton came on for theinjured Ray Crotty and Conor McGladeswitched from second centre to rightwing. In the 42nd minute we wereawarded a penalty which Cowhey

slotted to make the score 10–3. A fewminutes from normal time, we had ascrum, to the left, in Castleknock’s 22and Cowhey attacked the blindside andsent a long pass to Colm Quinn, whoraced over the line in the corner.Cowhey’s conversion attempt hit thepost and the score remained 10–8, witha minute or so to go. Castleknockregathered Collins perfect restart, whichput us under huge pressure. Poordecision making by Collins relievedsome of the pressure however. Fromthe bottom of a ruck Mark Sextonnudged the ball forward with his rightboot, just as the ‘Knock scrumhalf wasabout to put his hands on it; which theref believed to be a knock-on andawarded us a scrum. It was the 74th

minute, deep into injury time, andCowhey’s ability to overcome his twoearlier penalty misses came through.

Finlay delivered the perfect pass toCowhey; he landed an exquisitecrossfield kick into the arms of “themagician” McGlade, who ran the lengthof the pitch, evading the Castleknockfullback and out-sprinting their wingerto the line. What a finish!

St. Mary’s 6 – 21 St. Michael’sThis was a match that passed us by.We didn’t give St. Michael’s the respectthey deserved, especially after they hadbeaten a strong Clongowes side. Theoccasion got to us, which was hugelydisappointing. Only a handful ofplayers stepped up on that day – suchas Cowhey, Timmons and Quinner andthe rest of us were way below average. The most frustrating thing that day wasthe lack of intensity we brought andthere was no urgency about us. St.Michael’s, on the other hand, were

bitter about losing to us in a “friendly”and were ruthless and determined. They put some good phases togetherand got over our try-line three times. All we could manage in response wasto get a penalty and a drop goal. It wasa truly disappointing end to a goodseason.

I was very proud to be Captain of St.Mary’s and it was a huge honour forme. Overall, the season was anenjoyable one. I would like to thank theplayers for their commitmentthroughout the year. I would also liketo thank David Breslin, Clive Byrne,John Wynne, David Dunne, KieranO’Donnell and Paul Rock for all theirhard work and effort as well as all thegood memories.

202 ST. MARY’S COLLEGE ANNUAL 2006

Junior Cup Team Report2005-2006

This year’s JCT had an excellent seasonbut an ultimately unfulfilling one.Having done tremendously well toreach the Under 13 Cup Final two yearsago, the evidence was there that thisteam contained both potential and anunbelievable spirit.

Following a disappointing away loss toBlackrock, the team picked up toovercome leading schools such asBelvedere College and St. Michael’sCollege. The team’s spirit wasencapsulated in these wins withcommitted defence resulting in narrowbut well deserved victories.

The team’s form continued to improvegradually, as the season progressed. Areal turning point in the season was theteam’s trip up to play Ballymena. Thiswas an overnight trip and it providedan opportunity for team bonding. The

team produced one of its bestperformances to overcome a veryphysical, and talented, Ballymena team.

The team had a very settled lookthroughout the year. Killian GrumleyTraynor was a solid fullback while JeffGlynn and Maurice Walsh werethreatening presences on the wings, scoring many fine tries. Daniel Barnwellwas a very strong runner and was thespearhead of our attack, while beingably assisted by Eoin Moriarty. Theteam’s half back combination ofDarragh Fitzgerald and Tim Ryan hadan excellent season providing directionand control.

The team’s strength lay in the forwards. The frontrow of Shane Clarke, JJMcLoughlin and Niall Croke matchedup manfully against bigger opposition. The secondrow duo of Sean Corcoranand David Callanan were good aroundthe pitch and ensured qualitypossession. O’Connell was as strong as any in thecompetition. The side was captained byRonan Lennon and his leadership wasevident throughout the year. He wasassisted by joint vice captains BrendanO’Connell and Daniel Barnwell. Otherpanellists included Matthew Creedon,Eoin Carroll, Mark Fallon, Ian Hickey,Daire Horgan and Simon O’Donnell, each of whom made valuablecontributions throughout the year.

The Cup draw was very difficult with allthe top schools on the same side of thedraw. We were drawn against Terenurein Donnybrook. On a wet day, the teamproduced a spirited and determinedperformance but in the end it provednot to be enough. Outhalf Tim Ryanwas injured in the first half, leading toa shuffling of the backline, with SimonO’Donnell manfully coming in. Despiteour dominating possession, Terenurescored a well worked try, which wasduly converted. St. Mary’s displayedgreat determination and were dominant

especially in the mauls. The team’sefforts were rewarded when EoinMoriarty scored a fine try in the secondhalf. Unfortunately, the conversion wasmissed as were subsequent penaltychances. With the game in the dyingminutes, Terenure scored another try toput daylight on the scoreboard.

Nothing became this team like theirfinal game. The effort, commitment, and ability to fight back wasoutstanding. The disappointment wasconsiderable after the match, especiallyin light of the magnificent effort thatevery team member displayed. It provedto be a disappointing end to anotherwise great season.

Special thanks go to Mr. Smyth and hisassistants Alex Kelly, Martin Burmeisterand Rory O’Connor for their dedicationand application to the job and forgreatly contributing to an enjoyableseason.

Templeogue before losing to WillowPark, away. This resulted in our playingan away semi-final against St. Michael’sin dreadful weather. St. Mary’s put up agreat fight, but St. Michael’s got theupper hand late in the match and wenton to win by 15–7. The whole teamhad played their hearts out. The teamspirit shown by our lads was fantastic, and one of which all were very proud.

There were notable performances allseason from Ben Matthews, EoinFarrell, Cillian Barden, Stephen O’Carrolland Tim Shaffrey. Unfortunately, forsome games, we missed the considerable

talent of Gerry Gallivan and MatthewAndreucetti due to injury.

The year ended, for the extendedsquad, with a great night in the school, with parents also in attendance. Thecoaches complimented us on the spiritin which we played and also the verylarge numbers of boys who trained andplayed games during the season. TheCup Team appreciate the support of alltheir class mates: we also thank ourparents and our coaches, in particularFr. McNulty who helped us so muchduring the year.

ST. MARY’S COLLEGE ANNUAL 2006 221

It was a privilege for me to succeedLeonie Blackburn as Chair of theParents’ Association in September2005, but not a little daunting too. Themonthly meetings of a 22 personcommittee had proved quite stressful attimes in the first year of the Associationand now it was all ahead of me again. How fortunate I was though that HelenMurray, Rachel Larney and PatriciaGolden all agreed to join me as officersthat year to share the leadershipresponsibility.

As Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurerrespectively, they worked tirelessly tosupport and promote the aims of theAssociation over the nine months ofour term of office. Helen with her ownsub-committee took on a big fund-raising challenge and, through a quiznight and auction held at St. Mary’sCollege RFC, generated over €12,000 infunds for special projects for theschool. Elsewhere we discussed andresolved issues at our monthly meetingswith the school principals andorganised special talks/workshops forparents – two in particular on thesubject of Internet usage and security.(Dr. Vincent Molony was our guestspeaker on Coping with Adolescents atthe AGM in September 2005 and heproved very popular with the largeattendance that night.)

The committee year runs, from AGM toAGM, but our term did not end withthe AGM! Our biggest challenge wasstill ahead of us the following month –to organise the annual parents’ socialevent in the Fr Barry Hall. Another sub-committee had worked throughout thesummer with the new school catering

company, a willing pub owner (with ason in the school), a furniture rentalcompany and a band called Girl Talk todeliver the ‘gig of the year’ after the2006 Ryder Cup circus had left townthat autumn. A great night was had by all and I still hear peoplecomplimenting the event ever since.

A tiring but enjoyable year for me,made possible by the willingparticipation and encouragement of allthe parent class representatives on

committee, theprincipals of bothschools, and thePresident, Fr. JohnFlavin. Go raibhmíle agaibh go léir.

Friday 7th AprilArrive in Accra. Overnight in CSSp house, Adenta, Accra

Whatever we told the boys couldn’t haveprepared them for the sights from thebus. The narrow roads are lined withstalls and shacks and teem with people. It’s cultural inversion: whereasEuropeans live their lives behind thewalls of their homes, in Ghana a home iswhere you sleep but the street is whereyou live. The buses crawl through thecrowds, while hawkers try to interest us… Arriving in the calm of the ProvincialHouse was a relief. There’s time to sit, relax and let the images of the day settleinto some sort of order.

Saturday 8th AprilTravel to Sunyani

The road journey took eleven hours. Wehave two buses, both air-conditioned,and every couple of hours we stopped tostretch, use the bathroom, and changeplaces…. Having the air-conditioning inthe buses makes a big difference…Rather than excessive tiredness, cabin-fever sets in as the hours passed. Theafternoon began with school stories…Later, the singing started. Supported byan i-pod and speakers… By the day’s endit was time to ask for quiet; everybodywas tired.

The boys are delighted with the hotel in

GHANA IMMERSION 2006 From 7th April to 20th April, 2006, twenty six 4th and 5th Year St. Mary’s andTempleogue students, along with adults from both schools, Aidlink, the HolyGhost Order and the parent body, travelled to Ghana as part of an Aidlink andSpiritan run initiative - which aims to keep the issue of Development Educationand Aid in Africa to the forefront in St. Mary’s. During the trip a Web Diary wasprepared by Mr. Denis Murphy. What is reproduced here are extracts from that

Sunday 9th AprilMorning Mass. Afternoon relaxation.

The lads looked and felt fantasticallywell turned out in the white shirts andkhakis. Mass was celebrated in theCathedral by Bishop Matthew and was arelatively subdued affair, it being Lent. Itlivened up at the end when people werecalled up to give a contribution… Thenthe formalities. We were called to thealtar before the packed church andformally welcomed… There was silencefor our Linguist, Colm Quinn, who wentto the pulpit to explain who we were, why we are here, and to ask ‘for theroad’, or permission to leave. We meetthe teachers of St. James at 6.00 pm fora briefing on what to expect from ourweek in school….The lads were buzzingafterwards with excitement and admittedto some nervousness.

Monday 10th AprilAttend class St. James School

We walked over the road and up thelong driveway to the church, where FrDick presided over a Mass for the wholeschool. The College chapel was full and

the youngsters were giving plenty to thehymns… A camera crew from the StateTV station arrived to record the visit …Carl Mullen and Colm Quinn wereinterviewed on camera as ‘linguists’ fromthe visiting schools. It’ll be broadcast inthe next days… the group (go) over tothe classroom block, three (go) intoeach class …. After lunch Eddie Smithfrom Concern Universal brought us to avillage about an hour’s drive away to seea project which involves planting trees asfire-breaks. Michael Fitzsimons waslinguist… Afterwards, local volunteerstook us in groups of one and two andshowed us around their village.

Tuesday 11th AprilAttend class St. James SchoolAttend dinner with Bishop MatthewGyamfi, Bishop of Sunyani

I asked the boys today what happens inthe breaks between classes, or when lefton their own. Apparently, they’repeppered with questions about family:…and the rest… St. James, as well asbeing a secondary school, is also a juniorseminary, and some of the boys arestudying for the priesthood. Several ofour students have been asked if theyhave considered this…There’s a fair bit ofteasing in class and general goodhumour….They’re also busy swoppingphrases in the respective languages. There’s pages of this stuff on the desks:English into Twi, and vice-versa… Ourschool day finished with an outdoorclass given by Mr Hall-Baidoo on African

traditional religions and beliefs. The ladswere riveted… At lunchtime today theheads were beginning to droop so weintroduced compulsory rehydration. Thegroup sat for 30 minutes in the diningroom after the food, working their waythrough the coke-and-water mixture: twolitres each, and by the end of it werelooking more energetic. Angela Russ fromConcern Universal was waiting at 2.30pm to take us to see Bernard Bempah, whom we met first in 2004. Since thenthe students from St. Mary’s have fundedhis project, where groups of women learnhow to grow mushrooms in bags ofcompost made from treated sawdust….The St. Mary’s funding from the 2004visit launched 16 such groups, and therewere two journalists there to record thevisit. James Speers did the newspaperinterview, Cillian Keogh the radio.

In front of the bishop’s house were seatsfor all, neatly laid out in the usualsquare formation. We sat for a minute ortwo in absolute silence, under themoonlit African sky, listening to thenight sounds. At seven pm, to thesecond, the bishop came out, dressed inhis full robes. We stood as one and hegreeted us formally,

Wednesday 12th AprilAttend class St. James School

After first class, Mr Hall-Baidoo took usout under the tree for a seminar on theimpressions Africans and Europeans haveof one another… We were joined byabout ten teachers from St. James andinvited to put on a class about Irishculture for them…Our final seminar ofthe morning was given by Nana (chief)Oko Agyemany, a teacher in the school. He described the selection process forthe chiefs in the villages… After lunchthe lads went outside to practice theirIrish dancing for tonight’sentertainments in St. James, then gotchanged for a soccer match against thehost school.

leaving the hotel at 9.30 am to visit aConcern project involving the rebuildingof a village burnt in a bush fire, and willbe doing a spot of manual work for themorning….The drive was supposed totake 40 minutes; we budgeted one hour, and it took two…

…This village was completely burnedout eleven weeks ago, and the Irishgovernment gave €5,000 to help buymattresses, cooking pots, and buildingtools. The people are very, very poor, dressed in rags with many showingvisible signs of poor health. We weresupposed to spend several hours herebut the mess-up over the journey timemeant we’d to rush everything… Theafternoon was left free… the teacherswent with the boys for a swim… In theevening, the Concern Universal officeorganised drumming lessons.

Friday 14th AprilTravel to Kumasi Afternoon ceremonies with SpiritanCommunity

We left Sunyani at 9.45 and arrived inBantama at 12.15. We are staying in theHoly Ghost house with the novices...

Kumasi is an enormous city withvirtually no European residents andBantama is probably equivalent to theLiberties in Dublin. Kumasi was a bigstep for the group… there is no runningwater to be had, anywhere in theneighbourhood, or, it seems, the city.Washing in buckets is a newexperience… Here, every single sight, sound and smell are constant remindersthat we are in the middle of an Africancity.

After lunch we go to the Good Fridayceremonies – ceremonies unlike anythingwe’ve previously seen. Whereas normallychurches are bursting with exuberance,on this occasion the funeral clothes wereworn. Songs were hauntingly doleful;Christ had died and was being buried. We all felt a little odd wearing the whiteshirts. The heat in Kumasi is immense….We set up a room across from thechurch where everybody could take timeout, and the fellows went backwards andforwards as they felt the need. Theceremonies lasted from 3.00 to 5.00.

We had dinner about six, a huge fishcooked over a fire, with various localvegetables. Afterwards Fr Dick and half adozen postulants from the house

brought the group for a stroll abouttown, where they had their introductionto the open sewers, the hot dusty streetsfull of beeping cars, the music beltingout from every building, the peoplecalling to them as they passed.

Saturday 15th AprilVisit Adamkwame schoolKapro and Kumi water projectEvening Easter Vigil

We are guests at the opening of aclassroom block in a village near Kumasi.Aidlink had funded it, with acontribution coming from the moneyraised in the 24-Hour Fast in St. Mary’s.The St. Mary’s money put the finaltouches on the place: doors, windowshutters, paint. It looked very well…

In the afternoon, we visited the marketbut most stalls were closed for EasterSaturday… In the evening, we gatheredfor the Easter Vigil. A pyramid ofbamboos the height of a one-storyhouse had been built in the yard in frontof the church. An altarboy was chuckingkerosene about with good-intentionedabandon. It flared right up and the firstcandle was lit. We processed into thechurch. The vigil went all the way: six orseven readings, adult baptisms, offertory

procession, consecration, communion, the works…. It was the liveliest yet andthe hours flew.

Sunday 16th AprilEaster Mass

The Easter Mass at 10.00 was thenoisiest yet. A brass band and extradrummers joined the choir and theprocessions were spectacular… Followinglunch, we lounge about for theafternoon. The ‘Immersion’ part of theproject is coming to an end. Fr Dicktakes the fellows for the preliminarydebriefing. In the night we go for dinnerin a pizza place, with everybody togetherfor the first time this weekend. On theway home from dinner it began to rain, very heavily. The temperature droppedfrom 37 to 23 – the coolest we’ve had it.

Monday 17th AprilTravel to the Cape Coast

We are travelling to Elmina Village, onthe Cape Coast, which is effectively aEuropean-style holiday destination. Onebus is designated for sleepers, the otherfor singers…. The hotel here is on thebeach; there’s a breeze and a tropicaldownpour threatens but it’s relatively

Tuesday 18th AprilVisit Elmina Castle Visit Vocational Training SchoolVisit Elmina fishing village

We’re guests of the parish priest of thetown, Fr Francis Amonoo, who plans onbringing us to his school in the morning, then to Elmina Castle in the afternoon...Our first visit of the day was to avocational training school for girls, which teaches cookery and clothesdesign. We were met by a dancing congaline of teenage girls in traditionalcostume; the tour was good. The ladsinteracted with the girls and the smallkids. As usual, there was no sign of the‘missing generation’…. We’d a quicklunch in a hotel on the road…. Then itwas on to a national park containing350 square kilometres of rain forest. After a stiff walk upwards through thetrees we had the chance to take a ropewalk across the treetops. It turned out tobe not one span but a vast circle ofsuspension bridges connecting one gianttree to another…. We decided to move

our visit to Elmina Castle to tomorrowmorning.

Wednesday 19th AprilTravel to Accra – stay in CSSp house

The lads had a good morning visitingthe slave fort in Elmina, although somefelt a little self-conscious about theirwhiteness…. Following lunch we packedthe buses, and set off on the three tofour hour drive to Accra…. We arrived inAccra to be met by Br Constant, FrGabriel and Fr Jas Duncan. It gives agreat feeling of completion when you end in the same house that youstarted in…. Tonight we’ll do the formalfull-group end-of-tour evaluationsession.

Thursday 20th AprilVisit Accra marketLeave for home

The group are generally bursting withgood feeling: a different bunch than thetimid one which arrived here two weeksago….. We’ve an hour or two here in themarket, then it’s back for lunch andpacking, and on to the airport to beginthe saga of the return.

The very worthwhile work of the St.Vincent de Paul Conference continuedthis year with a committed group of 4th

and 5th Year students giving their timeto a number of ventures throughoutthe year.

The outgoing 6th Year members had seta very high standard in terms ofdedication and maturity. This was well

matched by our new senior members, the 5th Years, while an enthusiasticgroup of 4th Years greatly added to thespirit of the conference. The memberselected Eoin Lynagh as president.Declan Harmon was voted in assecretary of the Conference.

The year began with a Mass celebratedby Fr. Kennedy for all of 4th Year, on

the Feast day of St. Vincent de Paul, inlate September. Several 4th Years joinedup as a result of this.

Like in previous years, the main work ofthe Conference involved visitation inFatima Mansions, with our sisterConference, St. Joachim’s in Rialto. Theformer Deputy Principal Mr. Noel Doyleis the treasurer in St. Joachim’s andremains a vital link between bothConferences. As well as visiting some ofthe older residents in Fatima Mansions, our 4th Year volunteers helped out in anafter school homework club once aweek, spending time with some of theyounger residents of the area.

During the year we were also involvedwith the students in St. Michael’sHouse, on Grosvenor Road, helping outat their Christmas party and their sportsday.

The Conference has had a link with thewomen’s refuge in Rathmines for anumber of years and at Christmas a

group of members visited the refuge, accompanied by a rather slim SantaClaus (Eoin Lynagh), to distributepresents to the children staying there. We had a wonderful party with thechildren and left full of yuletide cheer.

The main fundraiser for the St. Vincentde Paul is our annual cake sale held inDecember. The cake sale could not goahead without the wonderfuldedication of the mothers from boththe Junior and Senior schools who helpout.

Particular thanks must go to AileenMcCarthy who has co-ordinated thecake sale for the past few years andwho has retired this year as her sonAndrew has now graduated from 6th

Year. Many thanks Aileen for all yourhard work.

Thanks also to all the mothers who givetheir time throughout the year to helpthe Conference and, of course, to allthe members without whom the St.Vincent de Paul could not function.

YOUNG SCIENTISTS COMPETITION

The Isopoda of Pollardstown Fen

Three first year students, RowanMoorkens O’Reilly, Philip Dix and CillianBarden entered the Young ScientistsCompetition this year. They studied thevariety of Isopods, more commonlyknown as Woodlice and plotted speciespresence against habitat.

Thier work took them from wetlands, toforests and under logs in search of thelittle insects and besides learning a greatdeal about ecology and species mappingthey also discovered a protected area richin wildlife.

Congratulations to all three but especiallyto Rowan who spent several days duringthe summer at the Fen, collecting theearly data.

Many thanks to Dr. Evelyn Moorkens forher assistance and inspiration during thisproject.
