After weeks of preparation the First Eucharist candidates will tomorrow come together for their Sharing day as part of their final preparation for the sacrament. The students are very excited about this next important step in their faith journeys and our prayers go with them. Please pray for the following students: This month’s Winter Appeal couldn’t be more timely considering the extremely cold weather we’re experiencing. This year we have been asked to provide non-perishable food items and classroom baskets are beginning to overflow. With just over a week to go let’s step it up and make this year’s Winter Appeal the best ever! Please refer to Mrs Evans’ report for more information. Well done MP-J, your Basket is looking good !! Last weekend’s Major Fundraiser was a huge success. All those who attended thoroughly enjoyed the evening’s entertainment particularly the games run by Brian O’Dwyer who was ably supported by his wife Cath, colleague Martin Keating and parent James Fulton. The Spinning Wheel was again a great hit and staff member Andrea Williams must be thanked for her persistence all night in selling the tickets and spinning that wheel!! Other games on the night were run by Jana Ash, Gen Gordon, Rochelle Gough, Catherine Evans and Jennine Brock who seemed to have as much fun as the guests!

A huge, huge thank you is reserved for all the businesses and supporters of St Mary’s who contributed so

much on the night. The quality of prizes was amazing! It is always an important task to make sure that the evening is well organised and that the Hall is looking its very best. Special thanks to Kellie Graham, Jana Ash, Katy Lee and Karen Glen who with their families spent many hours setting up. The photos say it all! Also, very special thanks to the following P & F members who put in a lot of the hard work collecting donations and prizes: Susy Lubeck, Megan Cox, Bronwyn Martin, Katy Lee, Roxanne Tipping. And to Louisa Munro for her organisation of the funds and to Amanda Quigg whose work as communications person is amazing. Finally, we say thank you to Karen Glen for her amazing leadership and drive – always supporting, always following up and always smiling!! An amazing effort! A special thank you to Michael O’Sullivan who auctioned some great prizes on the night. Thanks for all your support Michael! The Major Raffle was again organized by Ms. Lynne Morgan who took on this huge job coordinating the sale of tickets. It was great to see some locals win some of the prizes. Street Sales - Word of Thanks: Lynne Morgan would like to extend an extra special thanks to the following helpers for braving the winter chill to assist with ‘Street Sales’: Lyn Watson, Brenda Henderson, Roger Mansbridge, Jeanie Potts, Sue Wilson, Jenny Ritchens, Siobhan Thornberry, Roxanne Tipping, Pam Jarvis, Jordan Graham, Catherine Plessey, Clare O’Connell, Louise Munro, Cherie Matthews, Aileen Wall, Melva Gardner, Regina Schaefer, Danielle McKay and Anne Welsh

This week, we celebrate two significant events.

World Refugee Week This is the week the world commemorates the strength, courage, and perseverance of millions of refugees. Held every year, World Refugee Week also marks a key moment for the public to show support for families forced to flee. In September 2016, global leaders agreed to work towards a Global Compact for refugees in 2018 where all parts of society stand together with refugees. The Refugee Week theme in Australia of With Courage Let us all Combine, encourages Australians to celebrate the best aspects of our nation’s welcome of refugees. In doing this, we celebrate the positive contributions to Australian society made over the past 70 years by the 800,000 Australians who once were refugees, taking inspiration from the second verse of Advance Australia Fair: Let us pray this week for all those people who are refugees, just as Mary, Joseph and Jesus were over 2,000 years ago. We can take inspiration from the words of Pope Francis in his address on Migrant and Refugee Sunday…….

Lastly, I wish to address a word to you, who walk alongside migrant children and young people: they need your precious help. The Church too needs you and supports you in the generous service you offer.

Do not tire of courageously living the Gospel, which calls you to recognize and welcome the Lord Jesus among the smallest and most vulnerable. I entrust all child migrants, their families, their communities, and you who are close to them, to the

protection of the Holy Family of Nazareth; may they watch over and accompany each one on their journey. With my prayers, FRANCIS

Winter Appeal We are nearing the end of our Winter Appeal and we are very grateful for the wonderful support from our families. Baskets are nearly full and only need a few more items to fill them to the brim!!! We will be attending Mass on Wednesday 28th June as part of our Winter Appeal focus and invite parents to join us at

9.00am in the church. On Friday 30th June, we will be holding our annual Rug Up Day. For the past 4 years, we have ‘rugged up” together to stand in solidarity with all those who are homeless, hungry, and without warm clothing or shelter. It is a small gesture to show that as a Catholic community we are following in the footsteps of Jesus..

‘for whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, that you do unto me’ We are asking for a gold coin donation on Rug Up Day that will be sent to St Vincent de Paul to assist in their

Winter appeal. On Rug Up Day, students wear their school uniform (sports uniform only if they have PE on Friday) but may wear scarves, beanies, gloves, coats in any colour. Students may bring blankets or rugs for the classroom but these will not be taken outside. It’s a fun day and a great way to finish off the term as well as supporting and raising awareness of a significant issue in our community.

All parents are invited to the final College Assembly for the term on Friday 30th June at 12.30pm in the M/P Hall. (note earlier time as school finishes at 2.30pm) Thank you for your support.

It is always important to revisit our Student Expectations. These expectations stem directly from our work with the Positive Behaviour model and are aligned with our College TAG…

- Act Justly - Show Respect - Do our Best.

The expectations are a significant document in the life of our College and community. Student expectations contain a number of key statements that highlight the positive behaviour that we want to affirm and strengthen in the culture of the College. Within each statement are key words such as Pride, Respect, Inclusive and Challenge. On Tuesday night we held a fantastic information evening with our current Yr.9 students who are heading into Year 10. The challenge was made clear to these future leaders of our College….. They are not expected to follow the expectations…. They are expected to live these expectations.

If any parent has any concerns relating to the wellbeing of their child please contact me by

phone or email: [email protected].

Winter Holidays Are Fast Approaching! It’s a time for a sleep in and a time to relax and recharge the batteries! Staff will be looking forward to a well earned break after the extra work done in preparing to learn the new reporting system.

Reporting Update As promised in my last article, here is an explanation of what the summary of learning pages will look like. The callouts explain the purpose of each section on the page.

There is one page per primary student – primary sample page.

My work this week included witnessing the wonderful year 8R sharing their rainforest research with MP-J. They were able to engage the students and explain clearly some facts about rainforest locations, habitats and animals. Their discussions were informative, and the younger students learning were certainly enhanced by this interaction.

This term, the MP’s have been working on a Science unit for their Integrated Studies, ‘The Rhythm of Life’. They began by looking at what made things living and what a living organism needed to have/do to be considered alive. The MP’s met up with 8R, who had just been discussing the very same questions in Science, to find out more… Students began by cutting out and drawing pictures of things and categorised them into living, non-living and unsure. They then moved on to listing the characteristics they thought living things had or did. The initial poster was reviewed and changes made according to the criteria. The MP’s recently went on an excursion to the Healesville Sanctuary and on their return, they were given a task of researching an animal. The Year 7 students had just finished working on a Science research task where they investigated an endangered/vulnerable animal and had completed a class presentation. 7A and 7M worked with each MP class and discussed topics such as; what makes a great poster and the types of things you need to remember when completing assessment tasks. The MP’s also looked at the work the Year 7’s had completed to get ideas about presentation, content and diagrams.

Upon completion of their tasks, the MP’s invited the Year 7’s back to have a look at their work. Here are some of the comments… When the MP’s came, I made sure I asked them why they chose that animal and what fact they enjoyed. I also couldn’t believe how much work and effort they put into their work. Jayne I enjoyed listening to the information the MP’s gathered. They had some interesting information and they presented their work really well. Kade I was amazed at the standard of work that all of the kids did and was surprised at how well they answered the questions we asked as they were reading their information. Jonty When the MP’s came and presented their work to us I was pretty surprised at the high standard their work was completed to. It was good that they were so knowledgable about their topics and were really excited to talk to us and share what they had learnt. They were very good at presenting and were willing to keep talking to us about their animals. Overall it was a great standard of work and was great to be able to see the work they had completed. Courtney I was surprised by how good their work was and how much information they had. Their slideshows and posters were very creative and colourful too. Bella I thought it was cool seeing the MP classes work, I liked how a lot of them were really interested in their animal they worked on and they would tell us more information about their animal that wasn't even on their project. They were great at discussing their project and interacting with us. Jess
