Advent Wreath Lighting Ceremony – Year C First Sunday of Advent (Promise — Jeremiah 33:14-16) President: Advent is here, and the wait for the birth of the Christ has begun President: As we light the first candle we are reminded of God’s promise of a Saviour.

Reader 2 lights the candle Reader 1: The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I

made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: “The Lord is our righteousness.” (Jeremiah 33:14-16)

Reader 2: God‘s promise of hope is for all people;

together, we anticipate the day of his coming.

All: Holy God, you have promised to

bring salvation and justice to your creation. As we wait for the arrival of the Saviour, may we live as those who have already been saved by your grace - and may we share that grace with others. Amen.

The First Sunday of Advent

Lections are from the Revised Common Lectionary.

Daily Readings Scripture texts are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible.

The Collect

ALMIGHTY GOD give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Lesson ~ Jeremiah 33: 14 - 16 A Reading from the Word of God written in the Thirty-third Chapter of the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah, beginning at the fourteenth verse. THE DAYS are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time

I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: "The LORD is our righteousness." The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 25: 1 - 10 Ad te, Domine, levavi UNTO THEE O Lord, will I lift up my soul; my God, I have put my trust in thee: O let me not be confounded, neither let mine enemies triumph over me. 2. For all they that hope in thee shall not be ashamed: but such as transgress without a cause shall be put to confusion. 3. Shew me thy ways, O Lord: and teach me thy paths. 4. Lead me forth in thy truth, and learn me: for thou art the God of my salvation; in thee hath been my hope all the day long. 5. Call to remembrance, O Lord, thy tender mercies: and thy loving-kindnesses, which have been ever of old. 6. O remember not the sins and offences of my youth: but according to thy mercy think thou upon me, O Lord, for thy goodness. 7. Gracious and righteous is the Lord: therefore will he teach sinners in the way. 8. Them that are meek shall he guide in judgement: and such as are gentle, them shall he learn his way. 9. All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth: unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies. 10. For thy Name's sake, O Lord: be merciful unto my sin, for it is great.

Glory be to the Father, and to Son and to the Holy Ghost As it was in the beginning Is now and ever shall be World without end. Amen.

Epistle ~ 1 Thessalonians 3: 9 - 13

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Third Chapter of Paul’s First Letter to the Thessalonians, beginning at the ninth verse. HOW CAN we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and restore whatever is lacking in your faith. Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you. And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we abound in love for you. And may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Gospel ~ Luke 21: 25 - 36

The Lord be with you And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. Glory to Christ Our Saviour. JESUS SAID “There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among

nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in a cloud’ with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” Then he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” “Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.” The Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ Our Lord.

The Season of Advent Advent is the beginning of the Church Year for most churches in the Western tradition. It begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day, which is the Sunday nearest November 30, and ends on Christmas Eve. The Meaning of “Advent” The word Advent means "coming" or "arrival." The focus of the entire season is preparation to celebrate the birth of Jesus the Christ in his First Advent, and the anticipation of the return of Christ the King in his Second Advent. Thus, Advent is far more than simply marking a 2,000 year old event in history. It is celebrating a truth about God, the revelation of God in Christ whereby all of creation might be reconciled to God. In this double focus on past and future, Advent also symbolises the spiritual journey of individuals and a congregation, as they affirm that Christ has come, that He is present in the world today, and that He will come again in power. That acknowledgment provides a basis for Kingdom ethics, for holy living arising from a profound sense that we live “between the times” and are called to be faithful stewards of what is entrusted to us as God’s people. The Spirit of Advent Advent is marked by a spirit of expectation, of anticipation, of preparation, of longing. There is a yearning for deliverance from the evils of the world, first expressed by Israelite slaves in Egypt as they cried out from their bitter oppression.

Page 17: St Mary's Parish Bulletin November 29, 2015 (online version)

17 |

It is the cry of those who have experienced the tyranny of injustice in a world under the curse of sin, and yet who have hope of deliverance by a God who has heard the cries of oppressed slaves and brought deliverance!

Daily readings expand the range of biblical reading in worship and personal devotion by providing daily citations for the full three-year cycle of the Revised Common Lectionary. These readings complement the Sunday and festival readings: Thursday through Saturday readings help prepare the reader for the Sunday ahead; Monday through Wednesday readings help the reader reflect on and digest what they heard in worship.
