To the left is an article published in the Age about NAPLAN after it had been compulsory for five years. The most important aspect to remember is that we have a range of tests that measure student development. Well done to our children who performed so well this year. NAPLAN is the measure through which governments, education authorities, schools, teachers and parents can determine whether or not young Australians have the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community. The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. They also provide schools, states and territories with information about how education programs are working and which areas need to be prioritised for improvement. NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each schools assessment and reporting process, and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each students performance. Next week the children in Grade 5 and Grade 6 will set off to Melbourne for camp. This will be a great experience for teachers and children and the agenda for the three days is very busy. We look forward to sharing the experience with you on our return. On Wednesday night we had a Parents and Friends Meeting and it was good to meet to begin our list of goals and events for the future. At our next meeting we will be discussing a range of ideas for families and ways to fundraise for the school. Please come along if you have some spare time and find out what is planned for the future. Please remember that next Friday is a school closure as the staff complete a full day requirement of First Aid. It is also a special day this Sunday for all of our Mums and carers. On behalf of the school we wish you all a very happy Mothers Day and hope all families get the chance to spend time with one another. I hope you all have a fantastic weekend. Jason Our Mission: At St. Marys School Maffra, we are a Catholic School that strives to be authentic to the teachings of Jesus and the teachings of the Church. We aim to be an inclusive and nurturing community that respects, values and empowers each person to fulfil their dreams and potential. We envisage a School that provides challenging, relevant and child-centred learning experiences. We believe that the social, emotional, moral, spiritual and physical wellbeing of our students is pivotal to student health, safety, learning and success.

Dear Parents

This week children in Grade 3 and Grade 5 sat the NAPLAN test which is has been part of the school system for nearly twenty years.

NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process, and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance.

It is also a special day this Sunday for all of our Mum’s and carers. On behalf of the school we wish you all a very happy Mother’s Day and hope all families get the chance to spend time with one another.

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend.

Jason

HDSSA Cross Country: Congratulations to the 29 students who represented St. Mary’s in the HDSSA Cross Country event on Monday. St. Mary’s came

home with the winning shield, well done to everyone who competed. We have 10 students going through to the Wellington Zone Cross Country which will be on Monday 22nd May at the Yarram Golf

Course. A note was sent home earlier in the week to those students involved.

Winter Sports: Our Grades 5 and 6 will be playing a Winter Sports Round Robin on Tuesday 23rd May against other schools in the HDSSA. The Round Robin will be at Gordon St Reserve in Heyfield. The sports that will be played on the day are football, netball and t-ball. A note has been sent home this week.

We have been invited by AFL Victoria to bring along 24 Maffra Auskickers to attend the July 9th Etihad Stadium – North Melbourne V Fremantle AFL match, and play at half time in front of a packed Etihad stadium crowd as part of the AFL Auskick program. We are seeking 12 boys and 12 girls (Grade 2 or above) that might be interested in participating in this great offer. Maffra Auskick has missed out in the past couple of yeas in being allocated grid games, so it would be fantastic to turn up in all full force and make the most of this wonderful opportunity. Each participant will be given a ticket for themselves and a parent to attend the game, and Maffra Auskick will arrange for a bus to travel to and from the game*. (details to be finalised) If anyone is interested in participating on this day and showcasing the amazing talent that our local Maffra footballers have to offer on the big stage please contact myself Luke Goldsmith directly on 0412020675 ASAP.
