PEACE BE WITH YOU Our Gospel reading today depicts the disciples in a terrifying moment. They have locked their doors, huddling together in safety at a time when the Lord has transformed the entire course of human events. Jesus has risen from the dead. He has destroyed death and unlocked eternal life. But who can fully grasp all of this? Not even Thomas, one of the twelve devoted companions of Jesus, understands what has happened. Those of us who have never faced maltreatment for our faith can only imagine the disciples panic. Unimpeded by their bolted doors, Jesus visits his frightened friends. His appearance must have been shocking, since he says to them Peace be with you not once, but twice. If the disciples hoped Jesus would come back to them, they might have wished he would appear as a victori-ous leader or glorious king. Instead, he comes as they have known him and most need him: as a companion, and he brings with him the eternal peace of God. They might have wanted a bodyguard; instead he gives them peace.
LA PAZ SEA CON USTEDES La lectura del Evangelio de hoy describe a los discípulos en un momento alarmante. Pusieron candados a sus puertas, refugiándose juntos con seguridad en un momento cuando el Señor transformó el curso entero de los eventos humanos. Jesús resucitó de la muerte. Él destruyó la muerte y liberó la vida eterna. ¿Pero quién puede entender completamente todo esto? Ni siquiera Tomás, uno de los Doce devotos compañeros de Jesús, entendió lo que había pasado. Aquellos de nosotros que nunca hemos enfrentado maltrato a causa de nuestra fe podemos solo imaginar el pánico de los discípulos. Sin ningún problema con las puertas cerradas, Jesús visita a sus amigos asustados. Su apariencia debió de haber sido impactante, pues les dice la paz sea con ustedes no una vez, sino dos. Si los discípulos esperaban que Jesús regresara a ellos, entonces deseaban que regresara como un líder victorioso o rey glorioso. Al contrario, él viene como lo conocieron y como más lo necesitaban, como un compañero, y trae con él la paz eterna de Dios. Podrían haber querido un guardaespaldas; en cambio él les da la paz.

Segundo Domingo de Pascua LAS LLAGAS DE JESÚS En el Evangelio de Juan, Jesús se aparece dos veces a sus discípulos, y en esas apariciones Jesús les muestra las llagas de su crucifixión. De hecho, Tomás las toca. Las llagas de Jesús no desaparecieron después de su resur-rección. Con eso, Jesús quiere que sus seguidores sepan que su sufrimiento, y los nuestros, sean parte de nuestro encuentro con él. Jesús reveló cómo Dios está presente en nuestro su-frimiento, uniéndose en nuestros mo-mentos más dolorosos con consuelo y misericordia. El sufrimiento es un gran misterio y no podemos explicar o justificar adec-uadamente las muchas llagas que experimentamos a lo largo de la vida. Sin embargo, en la oración Dios puede abrir un camino por delante. El Espíritu Santo puede ofrecer
sabiduría para percibir cuándo o cómo nuestros sufrimientos hacen posi-ble la sanación o la esperanza para otros y para nosotros mismos. Cuando entramos en este misterio seguimos a Jesús, quien confió radicalmente en Dios para transformar sus sufrimientos a una nueva vida.
INCORPORANDO EL PERDÓN En unos pocos versos, vemos que los discípulos no solamente recibieron una nueva perspectiva del sufrimiento, sino una nueva fuerza y una nueva tarea en sus vidas. Su nueva fuerza, el mismo aliento de Jesús, es el Es-píritu Santo. Su nueva tarea, dada en el mismo aliento, es incorporar el perdón de Dios y proclamar ese perdón a todos. Cuando Jesús se les apareció, él no los castigó por haber-lo abandonado o traicionado hacía
solo unos días. Jesús les dio la paz de ser perdonados. Él dio el Espíritu San-to para que pudieran perdonar a los demás. La experiencia de ser perdonado y perdonar a otros está en el corazón del Evangelio. Jesús vino a proclamar y a manifestar el deseo de Dios de reconciliarse con sus hijos e hijas, no-sotros como personas. Dios está siem-pre trabajando hacia la reconciliación y se regocija cuando una relación rota es sanada. Cuando aceptamos el perdón de Dios y de los demás, así permitimos que Dios entre a nuestros corazones. Cuando perdonamos a otros o a nosotros mismos, partici-pamos en el trabajo de Dios.
