PASTOR’S MESSAGE “On the evening of that first day of the week,

when the doors were locked, where the disciples were,

for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst

and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’” John 20:19-20

In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks the word “peace” to his disciples three separate times. In his post-resurrection apparitions Jesus assures his followers that his divine presence will be with them although he will no longer by physically pre-sent to them. The gift of peace and faith are inter-twined: Thomas has no peace until he finally gains faith, albeit through having to physically see and touch Jesus. Remember how blessed we are for having never seen the Son of God yet still be-lieving in him. We are all familiar with the Prayer of St. Francis. Here are two other prayers for peace.

Prayer for Peace Anonymous from Lord, Hear Our Prayer

O God, from whom proceed all holy desires,

all right counsels and all just works,

give unto your servants that peace which the world cannot give,

that our hearts may be set to obey your commandments

and, being delivered from the fear of our enemies, we may pass our time under your protection in peace and rest. Through Christ our Lord.

For Reconciliation From the Visigoth Liturgy

Lord God, out of your great love for the world,

you reconciled earth to heaven through your only-begotten Son our Savior.

In the darkness of our sins, we fail to love one another as we should;

please pour your light into our souls and fill us with your tenderness

that we may embrace our friends in you and our enemies for your sake, In a bond of mutual affection.

We make our prayer through the same Christ our Lord.

ST. MATTHEW PARISH REACHING A MILESTONE!

Many of you know that this year, 2018, marks the 300th anniversary of the City of San Antonio. Did you know that this November our parish will realize its’ 50th year of existence! Also, our school was founded in 1993 and is celebrating its’ 25th anniversary this year as well. What a blessing our founding families and first pastors have given us as they laid the foundation for what has become the second largest parish in the Archdiocese of San Antonio, with over 5,000 regis-tered families, and arguably the parish with the most ministries and organizations and certainly the largest Catholic Elementary and Middle School! We have much to be proud of. In upcoming bulletins we will be announcing future events that will be offered as we celebrate our parish’s 50th anniversary.

CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR 2017

were mailed to all parishioners who contributed $500.00 or more. If you did not receive a copy and need a statement for tax purposes, please contact the Administration Office at 210-478-5000.

SO THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE It is not often that the author of one of the books of the Bible comes right out and tells us directly why he is writing what he is writing. In this Sunday’s Gospel reading, taken from the con-clusion of John’s Gospel, the author tells us that he has chosen to record these events so “that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name” (20:31). The letter of John echoes this idea by saying that “[e]veryone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God” (5:1)—what we might refer to as being “born again.” Our reading from the Acts of the Apostles for this Second Sunday of Easter shows us exactly what it looks like when believers are born again through faith. Copyright (c) J. S. DIVINE MERCY The celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday is an opportunity to reflect on the theme of how God’s mercy can overcome sin and, as the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments states, “a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face, with confidence in divine benevo-lence, the difficulties and trials that mankind [sic] will experience in the years to come.” This article appeared in the May 2011 issue of U.S. Catholic (Vol. 76, No. 5, page 46).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Sometimes children acquire nicknames in childhood that stalk them through adulthood: "Pinky," "Boo-boo," and the like. This Sunday was once called "Low Sunday," a step down from Easter glory, and an unfortunate nickname since Easter rejoicing goes on for fifty days. Traditionally this is the day when the newly baptized put away their white baptismal robes and returned to their everyday life after a week of in-tense celebration. Of course, the goal was to take up everyday duties with a very new point of view.

A long title for the day was Dominica in albis deposito, or "The Lord's Day for Putting Away the Albs," so no wonder the nickname "Low Sunday" arose. In the old calendar it was also called "Quasimodo Sunday," after the first word of the opening chant, Quasimodo geniti infantes, or "As newborn infants," a reference to the newly baptized taken from the Epistle of Peter. Victor Hugo's bell-ringing hero in The Hunchback of Notre Dame was abandoned as an infant on the threshold of the cathedral of Paris on Low Sunday, 1467, and named "Quasimodo" for the feast.

PERPETUAL ADORATION UPDATE

He Is Risen! During Holy Week we recall the events of the Passion of Jesus. We re-live the agony of Ho-ly Thursday and the horrific pain and suffering of Good Friday. At Easter we celebrate the most joyful event of history. The tomb is opened and the brilliance of the Eternal Light, the resurrected body of Jesus Christ, illumines a darkened world. At every mass we experience Easter when we are presented the Holy Eucharist at communion. We hear the words “The body of Christ”, then see and receive the host, and our bodies, our minds, our hearts and our souls are enlightened by the Real Presence of the Eternal Son of God. That moment just before actually receiving communion should be for us a mo-ment of worship and adoration. But that moment is all too brief. In the Blessed Sacrament chapel we have the chance to do what we cannot do in a communion line – spend time in the presence of the Blessed Lord Jesus. It is as if time has stopped at that moment of being presented the Holy Eucharist and we can wor-ship and adore Him as he truly deserves. The chapel is always open because many faithful people make the commitment to be there for a weekly hour of prayer and adoration. Please join us in spending time with Our Risen Lord Jesus. Sign up today! Call Mike at 210-579-0716 (voice only)

ANOINTING OF THE SICK The practice of offering the Sacrament of the Sick will take place on the second Sunday of this month, following the 12:45 Liturgy. This anointing is not a Mass. The format used is called “Anointing Outside Mass.” Fr. The following is the outline of the service that will be used April 8 for the Anointing of the Sick. It will begin approximately at 2:00 p.m. and conclude within 30-35 minutes afterwards. SAVE THE DATE Our parish will be celebrating our 50th Anniversary

with a special Mass. We are blessed to have Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller, M.Sp.S., preside at our Anniversary Mass on Sunday, November the 18th at 2 p.m. in the afternoon. After the Mass we will have a celebration with more details to come.

Please save the date.

PLEASE USE YOUR PRE-PRINTED ENVELOPES Registered members of the parish should be receiving a packet of contribution envelopes every month from St. Matthew. These envelopes have vital information printed on them to assist the staff in accurately posting and subsequently reporting your contributions at the end of the year. We are requesting that all parishioners make use of these convenient envelopes to facilitate our work here in the office. If on occasion, you do forget your envelope, please do one of the following: (1) Use the red and white envelope in the pew, being sure to write out your full name and address on the front of the envelope. Put your check or cash inside and drop it into the collection basket; or (2) You may also put a “loose check” (no envelope) in the basket provided that your checks have your name and address on them. St. Matthew cannot give credit or verification of donations made with “loose cash,” that is, cash which is not in a clearly marked envelope. Full name and address are important because of the large numbers of parishioners with similar names. We at St. Matthew are grateful for the generosity of our members. In addition, we would like to be of assistance to you when tax season comes around by providing you with an accurate accounting of your sacrificial giving. In order to accomplish this, we are in great need of your help in the ways outlined above. May God bless you for your continued support of our parish. Thank you very much.

PRAYER LIST Please pray for those suffering from illness that they may find relief from their burdens, especially:

MASS REMEMBRANCES WEEK OF APRIL 9—15, 2018

“For me, prayer is an upward leap of the heart, an untroubled glance toward heaven, a cry of gratitude and love which I utter from the depths of sorrow as well as from the heights of joy. It has supernatural grandeur that expands the soul and unites it with God.” — St. Therese of Lisieux
