PASTOR’S MESSAGE A few weeks ago I and staff member Beth Duarte and Pastoral Council President Danny Padron attended a workshop sponsored by the Parish Catalyst Ministry. Its founder is Mr. William E. Simon Jr. who wrote the book Great Catholic Parishes. Mr. Simon, who works for an investment business in L.A., William E. Simon & Sons, does philanthropic work and teaches at UCLA and USC, also ran for Governor of California in 2002. More recently Bill has shifted his focus into how he can assist in helping parishes improve the way they evangelize and provide ministry to the faithful. In his book, he interviewed and researched over 240 parishes, that in his estimation were outstanding, to discover traits they held in common. He discovered four areas that outstanding parishes excel in: shared leadership; fostering spiritual maturity and disci-pleship; a vibrant Sunday experience; and entering the mission field or evangelization. Shared leadership involves the clergy working in harmony and in collaboration with lay staff mem-bers and developing lay leadership among the many volunteers in the parish. Fostering spiritual maturity includes forming parishioners as intentional disciples of Christ through various religious education, bible study, retreat and other spiritual opportunities that a parish can provide. Having a vibrant Sunday experience involves creating a welcoming spirit of hospitality at Masses, thoughtful preaching, quality music, etc. Entering the Mission Field involves having evangelical and social outreach to the wider community in which a parish looks beyond its own needs and seeks to reach out to the broader local and even universal community. A focus of this Parish Catalyst Workshop was on how we can attract millennials or the “next gen” to our congregation, those aged 18 to 35. How many parents do we have at St. Matthew who have young adults in that age bracket that are not involved in parish life? This workshop has chal-lenged us to look at how we can better reach out to those of the next gen. Even though we have

BUILDING THE FUTURE CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

There will obviously be several days of delay from the recent rain events. An additional elev-en oak trees on the site have been saved by changing the grading plan following the con-tract award. Delays by the city in implementing a portion of the last bond issue dealing with the low water crossing on Vance Jackson at the fire station means that we will have to provide a detention area on our site. The civil engineer is working to develop a least cost alternative for inclusion in the project. At our direction, the initial detention pond design is being modified to save all of the adjacent trees.

WELCOME TO OUR PARISH BOOKLET Attention parishioners and visitors: Father Den-nis, our priests, and the Parish Pastoral Council are so excited to share with you our "Welcome To Our Church" booklets that are now found in the pews. The welcome booklet explains some im-portant aspects of our Catholic faith as handed down to us by Scripture and Sacred Tradition. Find out what is in our church buildings, and learn the roles of the clergy and laypeople who partici-pate in the Mass. Flip this booklet over for a guide to Mass re-sponses and prayers, along with a commentary or explanation of what is happening. We invite you to participate in the responses during Mass. We expect that due to the wealth of information contained in this booklet, many of you might want your own copy. We are taking individual orders...$2 per copy.

To order: contact Danny Padron at: [email protected].

Thank you!

PRAYER FOR RELIEF

Loving and gracious God, All love and mercy compels us to the side of our global brothers and sisters. In our charity, and in our compassion, help us stand with them. In our solidarity and in our sharing, help us stand with them. In our advocacy, and in our prayer, help us stand with them. And as we turn to them in their peril, we ask your grace go with us: To feed the hungry: -give us your grace. To give drink to the thirsty: -give us your grace. To clothe the naked: -give us your grace. To shelter the homeless: -give us your grace. To care for the sick: -give us your grace. To reach the trapped and the stranded: -give us your grace. To mourn the dead: -give us your grace. And in reaching out, may we find you in them. And may they find you in us.

- Adopted from a prayer of Catholic Relief Services fol-lowing Typhoon Haiyan, November 2013
