PARISH MISSION STATEMENT: The very heart of St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church is Jesus Christ present on
the altar. Our mission, born at that altar, is to be sent forth into our neighborhood in
order to build up the Kingdom of God. The labor of this effort must address in deed
more than in word the needs of our people.

Reflection: The prophet Isaiah speaks of
the promised one as he who will bring forth
justice to the nations. That justice will become
the covenant with the people and the light for
the world. Do I find myself living outside of
the darkness and in the light of Christ?
Psalm 29
The Lord will bless his people with peace.
Reading II
Acts 10: 34-38
God anointed him with the Holy Spirit.
Reflection: St. Peter announces how God
shows no partiality, but rather the light of
Christ is for all people. When anointed with
the Holy Spirit, the power of God is seen.
Do I know the peace of Christ in my life,
that reveals the glory of God in our world?
Gospel
Matthew 3: 13-17
After Jesus was baptized, He saw
The Spirit of God coming upon Him.
Reflection: St. Matthew descr ibes the
Baptism of Jesus by John. John is humbled
and Jesus is glorified. The Spirit of God comes
upon Jesus as he is named as “the Beloved in
whom God is well pleased”. Do I feel the
Spirit of God naming me as a beloved child of
God, humbly allowing the light of Christ to
shine in me?
Anima Christi
Soul of Christ, sanctify me.
Body of Christ, save me.
Blood of Christ, inebriate me.
Water from the side of Christ, wash me.
Passion of Christ, strengthen me.
O good Jesus, hear me.
Within your wounds, hide me.
Permit me not to be separated from you.
From the wicked enemy defend me.
At the hour of my death call me,
bid me come to your side, that with your
saints I may praise you forever and ever.
Amen

PASTOR’S CORNER
Happy New Year to you and your
families. May this Christmas Season
offer each of us great joy and profound
peace!
The New Year is full of resolutions and
discoveries. On New Year’s Day, as we
began our new year, we prayed with the
Kwanzaa principles and with Mary’s
guidance. Using a typical Ignatian
Examine, we join the Magi and look for
the light in our lives that lead us to Jesus.
In the past year,
what have I done for Christ?
With new resolutions,
what will I do for Christ?
In the year ahead,
what am I doing for Christ?
Today’s celebration of the Epiphany
quickly moves us as a faith community
from ‘just us’ as a family of believers, to
include our neighbors from different
countries and distant lands. The
sacredness of sharing our faith takes us
beyond our own families into the bigger
and broader world. The Magi teach us
not to fear or distrust the other. Rather,
we are invited to discover what the other
may see. Their dreams and their hopes
may help us see the world anew, and
come to recognize and reverence where
Jesus is dwelling among us. We pray for
this openness to accept and share the gift
of Jesus in the year ahead. Happy New Year! Pastoral Team

PARISH NEWS
Feast of the Epiphany of Our Lord
Our second Sunday in the Christmas Season celebrates the Epiphany of Our Lord.
Epiphany, as revelation, speaks of the Magi from other lands discovering the child Jesus.
The light of Christ brings them to the manger with gifts. These events transcend time. As
revelation of God and the plan of salvation, Epiphany brings God’s presence to all people
and all the nations.
Light shines among us – Emmanuel within us!

Blessing of Our Home on Epiphany
May all who come to our home this year rejoice to find Christ
living among us; and may we seek and serve, in everyone we
meet, that same Jesus who is your incarnate Word, now and
forever. Amen.
God of heaven and earth, you revealed your only-begotten
One to every nation by the guidance of a star. Bless this
house and all who inhabit it. Fill us with the light of Christ,
that our concern for others may reflect your love. We ask this
through Christ our Savior. Amen.
Loving God, bless this household. May we be blessed with
health, goodness of heart, gentleness, and abiding in your
will. We ask this through Christ our Savior. Amen.
After the prayers of the blessing are recited, the home is
sprinkled with Epiphany water and incensed. The initials of
the Magi are inscribed upon the doors with the chalk:
20 + C + M + B + 20
