Are you good at making people feel welcome?

When you meet someone new, like a new

neighbor, a new work colleague or a new

parishioner, do you make them feel at home?

Many of us can probably do a much better job at

this. When we make people feel welcome, we

make them feel like they are included instead of being

excluded. We are made for relationships � with God and

each other. A simple “hello” and a smile goes a long way.�

First Reading: Acts 2:42�47 �

In the early days of the Church in Jerusalem, the faithful

listened intently to the teachings of the apostles. They lived

a communal life, sharing all property in common and

praying and taking their meals together. �

Second Reading: 1 Peter 1:3�9 �

In this first letter from Peter, he speaks to the Christians

with great joy and confidence, reminding them that through

Christ’s resurrection, they have been given a new birth and

are heirs to the kingdom of heaven. �

�

Gospel: John 20:19�31 �

After his resurrection, Jesus appears to his disciples and

gives them the power to forgive sins. Thomas, who is

absent, sees Christ later and believes in His resurrection

after feeling His wounds. Christ admonishes Thomas by

saying, “You became a believer because you saw Me.

Blessed are they who have not seen and believed.” �

Live the Liturgy�

�

Have you ever experienced awe? Awe is commonly defined

as a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or

wonder. A moment of awe has the ability to lift us up out of

ourselves and immerse us into something that causes us to

wonder about ourselves, the meaning of life, and truth. Awe

is an experience of connection that links us to something

that is beyond the normal happenings of life. �

�

For us who believe that the resurrected Christ is present in

all of life and the totality of the universe, being touched by

awe can lead us to exclaim, “My Lord and my God!”

Pondering the vastness of God’s presence also brings us to

a profound sense of God’s mercy, which is

the showering of His unconditional love on

each of His daughters and sons. When we

internalize this mystery, we may find

ourselves standing in awe once again and

feeling an intense sense of peace.�

Gospel Meditation�

Encourage Deeper Understanding of Scripture�

�

A person was going through a very dark time, questioning

the meaning of life, not feeling very purposeful or

worthwhile, and feeling disconnected and unappreciated.

Suddenly, they gazed up at the night sky, found themselves

in awe of all the stars and constellations, and exclaimed, “I

am here on purpose and I am loved!” Having been brought

by God to this moment of intense connection and

awareness, his life changed from that moment on.�

�

If we are always preoccupied with the challenges,

obligations, and stuff of daily life, we can easily miss the

wonderful opportunities when the resurrected Christ is

knocking at our door. If we open ourselves to the fullness of

experience, we will find ourselves listening and embracing

all that is around us, being caught up in the magnificence of

creation’s grandeur and knowing in our heart and soul that

God is and I am.�

�

While that sounds like a simple, tell�me�something�I don’t�

know kind of revelation, it is life changing when it takes root

in the depth of a person’s soul. Stumbling upon this

awesome truth and internalizing it doesn’t require an assent

of the mind. It beckons for a claim on our soul. We find

ourselves knowing something profound that cannot be

explained or reasoned, but purely is. When we are caught

up in an experience and encounter the truth, it doesn’t

matter how all of the pieces got put together. Truth is simply

truth. The “my Lord and my God” responses we utter are

not evoked because all of the pieces of faith and life make

reasonable sense. The “my Lord and my God” affirmations

come when we are lifted up out of our preoccupations and

silliness and are in the presence of mystery and mercy.�

�

God is mystery, one who is beyond our grasp but at the

same time within our reach, knowable yet unknowable. And

when in the presence of mystery, there comes an intense

experience of mercy. We know deep within the essence of

ourselves � and in the very life of creation � this beating,

unconditionally accepting, life�sustaining, profound,

mysterious yet familiar presence of love. We have found

our peace. “Peace be with you.” Breathe in and breathe

out. Peace.�

Sacred Linen Ministry�

�

Each week, the Sacred Linen Ministry care for the

laundering of the purificators and towels used at each Mass

by the Celebrant and Eucharistic Ministers. Linens are

treated, washed and ironed. Volunteers are needed for this

Ministry (approximately once every two months). Linens

may be picked up and dropped off at your convenience.�

�

Diocese of Paterson by Mandate of the Bishop�

As cases of coronavirus increase exponentially, it

is a moral imperative for all people to do what is

humanly possible to prevent the spread of the

illness. Large gatherings of people have rapidly

become a health risk. The following provisions for

the Diocese of Paterson are effective immediately.�

�� All public Masses are hereby suspended in the Diocese

of Paterson until further notice.�

�� The celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation is

suspended.�

�� The celebrations of Frist Penance and First Holy

Communion are to be deferred in all parishes until

further notice.�

Five Steps for Praying�

when you’re feeling overwhelmed�

�

Stress, anxiety, and the emotions that accompany crisis are often described as feeling like giant waves crashing around

you. Calm your heart and your spirit by taking time to reflect on where you have been, where you are, and where you would

like to go.�

�

In his�Spiritual Exercises,�St. Ignatius of Loyola provides the Examen as a five�step tool for reflection. The focus of this tool

is to heighten your awareness of God’s presence in the experiences of your daily life. The following steps are an adapted

Examen for reviewing and processing your situation following a crisis. �

�

This retreat is not intended as a substitute for seeking mental health support after a situation of loss or crisis but instead is

an opportunity to process the experience through the lens of faith. As you move through these steps, consider writing down

your thoughts or feelings in a journal.�

1. Find a safe and quiet place to become aware of God’s presence�

Recent events may seem to be swirling around you. Honor your own beauty and dignity by stepping away to breathe. Jesus

told us that there is a time to “Come away … all by yourselves and rest a while” (Mark 6:31). You could say something like

“God, help me to calm the storm in my heart and mind so that I can hear your voice and feel your peace.”�

�

2. Review what has occurred through the lens of gratitude�

Gratitude is the foundation of our relationship with God. In every situation, even the most difficult, we are given gifts. Maybe

God’s gift to you is your safety or hearing a loved one’s voice or the feeling of the sun on your face. Tell your story of the

recent overwhelming event to God. Begin when you first became aware of the situation that is now affecting you. When did

you first hear about/know that this crisis situation was going to affect you? What were your first thoughts and feelings? Then

what occurred? Pay attention to the emotions that are evoked as you tell the story to God. What are the little details that

stand out to you that you may not have noticed before? God is speaking in those details. Who are the people that you

interacted with during the crisis situation? As you think about them, how do you feel? The story will take various turns;

continue to share with God in your mind and heart. As you move closer to the present in the story, how have your thoughts

and feelings changed?�

�

3. Pay attention to your emotions, recognizing they are sacred�

St. Ignatius embraced emotion. He believed that the presence of the Holy Spirit became clearly revealed in the emotions

that are evoked when we reflect on our experiences. As you reflect on your story, what were the emotions you felt? When

were they stronger than others? What were the moments when the feelings that surfaced surprised you? Can you pinpoint

one or two moments or interactions where emotion arose from within you? Thank God for speaking to you through those

emotions.�

�

4. Ask God to speak to your open heart�

Now that a couple of moments have been pinpointed where feelings surfaced in the recent situation, you can pray to receive

insight from these experiences. Allow the Holy Spirit to direct you toward one or two moments, images, or feelings that God

is calling you to examine with greater intensity. It could be one word or phrase that someone said to you. It could be your

emotional reaction to something that occurred. It could be a tiny detail that you think no one else noticed. As you hold that

moment or feeling in your heart, words of prayer may begin to form around that experience. Let the prayer grow.

Somewhere in your reflection on this recent crisis situation, God is providing you with messages. With the Holy Spirit’s

guidance, begin to look for those messages in the emotions, images, and interactions. What can you learn about yourself?

What might some of the messages be that can be taken away from the experience? What is God whispering to you in your

heart?�

�

5. Look toward tomorrow�

These messages have been given to us as a gift from God. When waves of stress and crisis are crashing over us, it is

difficult to see the shoreline. Having embraced the truth in emotion and extracted messages, however, we now can choose

our next destination. You are now seeing the shoreline more clearly. You are strengthened to look forward to the future.

How can you incorporate the wisdom that has been given to you into the next steps of your journey? Ask God to provide you

with strength for the challenges that lie ahead. Pray this prayer: “God, in the next few hours and days, please help me to …”�

Address any concerns that are in your heart about the next steps of your journey in prayer. Your life is a gift, and it is

adorned with gifts from God. Recognize with gratitude that you are loved and never alone as you walk forward on your

journey.�

�

End with the Our Father or pray quietly in your own way.�

Celebrate the Sacraments�

�

Baptism: Baptism is celebrated on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the

month after the 11:00 am Mass and on the 4th Sunday during the

11:00 am Mass. Please call the Parish office at least two months

in advance to make arrangements.�

�

First Reconciliation & First Communion: Our Faith Formation

Program begins with Grade 1. First reconciliation and First

Communion is a 2�year program. Please call the Faith Formation

office to register your child.�

�

Confirmation: Confirmation is a 2�year program beginning in

9th grade. Students will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in

the spring of their 10th grade year.�

�

Matrimony: Couples are asked to contact the Parish at least

one year in advance.�

�

Anointing of the Sick: Please call the Parish office at anytime

for Communion calls or visitation of the sick or elderly. Holy

Communion may be brought to the home of any person who is

temporarily or permanently homebound.�

�

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA): RCIA prepares

adolescents and adults for Baptism and full Communion into the

Catholic Church. Please call the Parish office for information�

CRS Rice Bowl is Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten faith�in�

action program. It offers opportunities for your family to

engage daily with spiritual pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting and

almsgiving. It is an opportunity to come together as a

community and reflect on what it means to live out our

Gospel call and encounter those most in need.�
