~Parish Mission Statement~

We are the Family of St. Maurice at Resurrection Parish joined together

sacramentally in Jesus Christ, sharing our skills and abilities across the world to

nourish all human hungers. We continually renew our energies by celebrating

around the Table of the Lord and grow to be more effective ministers

in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Born to be Wild!

"Why...did it bring forth wild grapes?" —Isaiah 5:4

God took perfect care of His vineyard, the house of Israel (Is

5:1ff). With a perfect Gardener and perfect care, you would

expect the vineyard to produce domesticated, fruitful

grapes. No one would logically expect wild grapes to be

produced. For this to happen, the domesticated grapevines that

were planted and cultivated would seemingly need to have new

DNA, that of wild grapes, and that is what resulted.

Therefore, God told the people of Israel, and us also, that if they want

to change their nature to be wild, He would let them live in a condi-

tion which fits their desire for wildness. Thus, the Lord tore down the

walls which protected the vineyard, allowing wild conditions, wild

plants, and wild animals to invade (Is 5:5-6). Perhaps then the Israel-

ites, and us as well, would come to their senses (see Lk 15:17ff) and

return to the Lord. Perhaps the wild grapes would learn from the mer-

ciless effects of wild living and humbly return to their domesticated,

fruitful nature that comes with being a child of God.

When Jesus proclaimed the parable of the vineyard in today's Gospel

reading, those who heard understood Jesus' message all too clearly.

It was not that they couldn't understand Jesus; it was that most of

those who heard Him rejected His message, rejected God and His

protection, and chose wildness and separation from Him.

The message is clear. God's plan is to bring us into His family so we'll

bear good fruit. Repent of any desire to "run wild" and rebel against

the Lord (Ex 32:25).

Prayer: Father, do in me whatever it takes in order to do through me

whatever You will.

Promise: "Then God's own peace, which is

beyond all understanding, will stand guard

over your hearts and minds." —Phil 4:7

Praise: Praise You, Jesus, "my Lord and my

God!" (Jn 20:28)

Hunger News

Blessed are the merciful, for they will

be shown mercy. Matthew 5:7

We saw many examples of merciful people in the af-

termath of hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria and the

earthquake in Mexico. On television, I saw men and

women forming a human chain through flood waters

to rescue a man from a sinking car in Texas, and peo-

ple digging through the rubble to save children in

Mexico. Merciful people were shown dropping off cas-

es of water, food and supplies for the Keys and Puerto

Rico. The St. Maurice Hunger Program is taking part in

acts of mercy by sending $1,500 to supply food and

water to the needy people in Puerto Rico, and we are

sending $1,500 to aid the survivors in Mexico.

The members of the Summer Bowling League demon-

strate mercy by donating $2,200 to the Hunger Pro-

gram. Cecile Erlsten, President of the Board sent the

members a thank you letter in which she said, “Over

the years, I am blessed to say that one thing did not

change and that is your love, concern and support for

the poorest of the poor. With your help children can

have food in their bellies and have good clean water

to drink, and families can have a meal together rather

than having to rummage through garbage for their

daily bread.” We appreciate their continued support.

The St. Joseph’s Social Welfare Center feeding pro-

gram located in Vallamadam, Kaniyakumari District,

South India was reviewed at the September 25 th

meeting of the Board of Directors of the Hunger Pro-

gram. The population being fed consists of orphans

and destitute elders, totally 165 in all. There are also

some lepers in a nearby shelter that are fed. Ramona

Rung has visited this project and attested to the good

work being done there. Project Leader Chuck Kelley

recommended that this project continued to be fund-

ed. St. Joseph’s Social Welfare Center will receive

$4,600 annually.

Casa San Jose’ Center for Children in Cochabamba,

Bolivia was reviewed at the July board meeting. The

children living at the center were abandoned by their

parents or have run away from homes in which they

suffered physical abuse. There are 120 children housed

at the center where they receive shelter, food and

affection.

Project Leader, Meredith Shuster recommended that

this project continue to receive $3,000 annually. We

wish to thank all those who participate in donating to

the St. Maurice Hunger Program. It is only through your

continued help that we are able to follow the exam-

ple of Jesus in showing mercy to those who desperate-

ly need it.

How to Save Your Children Through the Rosary

Pray the Rosary Every time you pray the Rosary, say: “With this Rosary, I bind all my children to the Immaculate Heart of Mary for her guidance and protection.”

In doing so, Our Lady promised “to see to their souls.”

Mother Mary to Fr. Gobbi
