HIS EUCHARISTIC CHALLENGE
"Jesus was fully aware that His disciples were
murmuring in protest at what He had said. 'Does it
shake your faith?' He asked them." —John 6:61
Jesus challenges us to believe His mysterious statement:
"The bread I will give is My flesh, for the life of the world" (
Jn 6:51). A typical reaction to this challenge is to ask the
question: "How can He give us His flesh to eat?" (Jn 6:52) Jesus does not
directly answer this question. Rather, He extends an even more puzzling
challenge by repeatedly insisting that we eat His Flesh and drink His Blood
(Jn 6:53-58). If we do this, He will raise us from the dead (Jn 6:53-54), live in
us and we in Him (Jn 6:56), and give us life forever (Jn 6:58). If we do not eat
His Body and drink His Blood, we "have no life in" us (Jn 6:53).
Then "many of His disciples remarked, 'This sort of talk is hard to endure! How
can anyone take it seriously?' " (Jn 6:60) "From this time on, many of His
disciples broke away and would not remain in His company any longer" (Jn
6:66). Nevertheless, Jesus continues to insist that we believe in and receive
His Body and Blood.
Joshua challenged the people: "Decide today whom you will serve" (Jos
24:15). Jesus, the new Joshua (Jeshua), also challenges us to decide today
about living to receive His Body and Blood. Will we receive Him in
repentance, joy, and love? Will we receive Holy Communion as often as
possible and center our lives on the Eucharist? Jesus is challenging us. Our
actions will speak louder than our words. Will we accept Jesus' challenge?
Prayer: Father, grant me the grace to
come to the Eucharistic Jesus
(see Jn 6:65).
Promise: "Defer to one another out of
reverence for Christ." —Eph 5:21
Praise: Praise Jesus, the Gate, the
Door, the only Way! Praise You, Jesus,
our "Leader in the work of
salvation" (Heb 2:10).

Saint André Bessette’s Story Brother André expressed a saint’s faith by a lifelong devotion to Saint Joseph. Sickness dogged André from birth. He was the eighth of 12 children born near Montreal. Adopted at 12, when both parents had died, he became a farmhand. At 25, André applied for entrance into the Congregation of Holy Cross. After a year’s novitiate, he was not admitted because of his weak health. But received an extension at the urging of Bishop Bourget. He was given the humble job of doorkeeper at Notre Dame College in Montreal. In his little room near the door, he spent much of the night on his knees. On his windowsill, facing Mount Royal, was a small statue of Saint Joseph, whom he was devoted to since childhood. When asked about it he said, “Some day, Saint Joseph is going to be honored in a very special way on Mount Royal!”
When he heard someone was ill, he visited to bring cheer and to pray with the sick person. He would rub the sick person lightly with oil taken from a lamp burning in the college chapel. Word of healing powers began to spread. When an epidemic broke out at a near-by college, André volunteered to nurse. Not one person died. “I do not cure,” he said again and again. “Saint Joseph cures For many years the Holy Cross authorities tried to buy land on Mount Royal. When, the owners yielded Brother André collected $200 to build a small chapel and began receiving visitors there—smiling through long hours of listening, applying Saint Joseph’s oil. Some were cured, some not. The pile of crutches, canes and braces grew.
St Andre died at 92. He was beatified in 1982 and canonized in 2010.
Window Saint Stories
WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK??
The Purpose and Meaning of the Ten Commandments
The 8th Commandment is about Truthfulness “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.” God says if we love others we should not deceive or lie to them. How im-portant is truth? The Bible says that Jesus is “the way and the Truth” John 14:6. As the source of truth, God requires that His servants always speak truthfully. Under God's inspi-ration, King David wrote, “…LORD, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy hill? He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from his heart and has no slander on his tongue, who does his neighbor no wrong and casts no slur on his fellow-man, who despises a vile man but honors those who fear the LORD, who keeps his oath even when it hurts” Psalms 15:1-3, NIV. God expects truth to permeate every facet of our lives. Everything in the life of a Christian is anchored to truth. God wants us as His children, to commit ourselves to truth and reflect it in everything we do The Eighth Commandment condemns lying. Because God is regarded as the author of all truth, the Church believes that humans are obligated to honor the truth. The most obvi-ous way to fulfill this commandment is not to lie — intentionally deceive another by speak-ing a falsehood. So a good Catholic is who you want to buy a used car from.
