Do you have a little time to share to help our less fortunate neighbors?

Here are the current volunteer needs for the Catholic Charities Neighborhood Center: Meal delivery drivers are needed for Thursdays, Fridays

and Saturdays. Pick up meals between 10:30am and 11:30 am. Routes can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on volunteer’s availability. Meal line (traying up meals for meal delivery) on

Thursdays from 9:30am to 11am. Food pantry assistance on Thursdays 11am to 1pm.

If you can help, please call Corinne Chamberlin at 304.232.7157, EXT 5, or email her at

[email protected].

Sponsor a Student!

The upcoming 2018-2019 school year finds several school families in need of tuition assistance. We are asking those parishioners who are willing and financially able, to consider sponsoring a child for the upcoming school year. Tuition for one child is $3490; for two children $6300; and for three or more children $8515. If you able to provide assistance or have questions regarding this program, please call Shandi Nodurft for further information at 304.242.3966. If your child has benefited from a quality Catholic education at St. Michael Parish School, perhaps you would consider offering that gift to another child. Many families are struggling in our present economy and could truly use some help. Thank you for your consideration!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serve with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the "Military Vicariate." In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the "Archdiocese for Military Services, USA." Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in 1825. He was assigned as a "schoolmaster," but he sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti-Catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant services. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the "Nuns of the Battlefield" (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese.

FATHER BILL HOSTS TRIVIA COMPETITION AT OUR LADY OF

GRACE PARISH, ROMNEY My former parishioners have asked me to conduct a "trivia night" at the parish on Sunday, August 19. Proceeds will go to the Catholic Charities office in Romney. An Italian dinner prepared by the parish's Knights of Columbus Council will begin festivities at 4:00 PM and the trivia competition begins at 5:00 PM. There will be trophies for first and second place winners. We can spend Sunday night at the rectory in Keyser (the rectory has several bedrooms). If any of our parishioners want to come with me to form a team, you are welcome. Please let me know by email [email protected] or phone 304-242-1560 ext 7.

Consider enrolling your family in the CMA: Commemorative Mass Association

The CMA is a special program which allows our parishioners and friends to remember their loved ones in a beautiful way. A total of 18 Masses will be celebrated for the repose of the souls of those inscribed in the Parish Commemorative Mass Association throughout the year of enrollment. The cost to enroll is $50. The bulletin will regularly list the names of those enrolled in the CMA. At the time of enrollment, you will receive a beautiful leatherette-type folder (as seen above) describing the Commemorative Mass Association. Please contact the Parish Office with any questions or to enroll someone in the CMA. --Eternal Rest Grant Unto Them Lord, and Let Perpetual Light Shine Upon Them and All the Souls of the Faithfully Departed.

Mary, Ark of the New Covenant Statue Here at St. Michael for a Visit Saturday June 30 through Wednesday July 4 After beginning to practice her faith more fully through the Divine Mercy devotion, and the total consecration of herself to Mary, Bernadette Conklin, found that the words, “There needs to be a greater devotion to Jesus within the womb of Mary” began to resonate in her soul. Shortly after, “Conklin was inspired to begin her Preborn Jesus Ministry (PrebornJesus.com) in the Pittsburgh area, to bring to fruition a new icon called Vessel of the Preborn Jesus, and then to follow it with a statue combining the ministry and a specific role of our Blessed Mother in a unique statue called Mary, Ark of The New Covenant.” Bernadette was inspired, “…that the base of the statue would be the Ark of the Covenant since Mary perfects the Old Testament ark.. leading the battle as the ark led the Israelites in the battle of Jericho… We need Our Lady now, more than ever in the battles we are fighting.” The statue has two main features: “…First, nine-month old Jesus is totally visible in the womb of the Virgin Mary with the Rosary encircling him in the womb. Second, Mary is atop the Ark of the Covenant from the Old Testament, superseding it as the New Ark…” [http://www.ncregister.com/blog/joseph-pronechen/unique-new-image-of-mary-combines-revelation-both-testaments-marian-an#view-comments] The Mary, Ark of the New Covenant Statue will be displayed at the following masses at St. Michael’s Sat. June 30: 4:30pm Mass Sun. July 1: 7:30 am; 9:00 am; 11:30 am Weds. July 4: 9:00 am A Pro Life Rosary will follow the Sunday 11:30am mass.
