Twenty Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3
Prayer for a New Bishop Almighty and all loving God, Eternal Shepherd
and Guide, we are grateful for Bishop Lynch and his twenty years of ministry in our diocese.
During this time of transition, we trust in Your love, confident that You will once again give to the Diocese of St. Petersburg a shepherd who will inspire us to be Christ’s heart of mercy,
His voice of hope and hands of justice.
Guide our new bishop to enlighten our hearts and minds with the truth of the Gospel, the power of the sacraments, and the desire to
serve you in all things.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Dear Friends in Christ:
I was thinking of putting a quote from today’s gospel on the marquee this week:
“We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.” (Luke:17:10)
What do you think? That I have completely lost it? You’re probably right because, taken at face value, these words of Jesus are not likely to inspire. But they do reveal something about human nature or perhaps human nurture, that we could benefit by examining.
Let me give you an example. I am acquainted with a very wealthy couple who donate to many philanthropic causes. But before they give up a dime, they sit down with those institutions to dictate the ways in which they must be recognized for their gifts. Recognition might include a dinner, a magazine article and/or the naming of a building. Truly, some of their gifts are quite large and it is much better that that they share than not share. And you can even say that making their gift known likely inspires other people to give.
Perhaps they require recognition because we are brought up this way. Children are often trained by using rewards and punishment. “If you don’t eat your vegeta-bles, you won’t be getting dessert.” Or, “If you don’t straighten out your room, you cannot go out and play.” This can continue on as we grow older. If you participate in a walk for charity, you get a shirt to show that you did, a reward to give you recognition for doing something good; organizers will tell you that this works.
The ideal that Jesus wants us to aspire to is to do what we ought to do because we ought to do it, not merely for recognition. In another place, Jesus says,
“But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing so that your almsgiving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.” (Matt 6:3-4)
Therein lies the key. God has given us all that we have. And we give glory to God when we share, without looking for special rewards for doing so, because our Father who sees all will be sure to reward us.
Sincerely in Christ,
