Mark 12:28b-34
“You are not far from the kingdom of God”
Imagine how we would feel if Jesus approached us and said “You are not far from the kingdom of God!” Well, it turns out that it is not
very complicated to be far from the kingdom of God. We must love God with our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength; and love our
neighbors as we love ourselves. Loving God is not too difficult, especially if we believe that God is the creator and source of all that we
are, all that we have and all that we ever will be. And loving our neighbors as ourselves is not that complicated. But it is not easy. It
means wanting and doing for our neighbors what we want and do for ourselves, including those neighbors who do not return our love;
those who reject us; those who clearly do not love us. When we do meet Jesus how far will He say that we are from the kingdom of
God?

31st Sunday of the YRB
1st Reading (DEUT 6:2-6) tells us that to love God means to keep His commandment, especially the great commandment of love.
2nd Reading (HEB 7:23-28) this reading shows the superiority of Christ over the priests of the Old Testament.
Gospel (MK 12:28-34) Jesus tells us what the two most important of God’s commandments are: Love of God and Love of neighbor.
Theme: The love of God and the love of neighbor as the entire law.
According to today’s Gospel reading (MK 12:28-34), one of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him, “what is the first of all the commandments?” Jesus replied, “The first is this: Hear, O Isra-el, the Lord our God is Lord alone; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: you shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these” (MK 12:28-31).
In answering the scribe’s question Jesus was not saying that the other commandments do not count or are unimportant. He was saying that love is the spirit behind all of them. If we follow the command of love, we will keep the others, but if we keep others without love, we are doing nothing and that makes us legalists. Thus St. Paul says, “And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away my possessions, and if I even let them take my body to burn it, but do not have love, I gain nothing” (1COR 13:2-3).
In this Gospel, Jesus is teaching us that the love of God and the love of neighbor are insepa-rable twins. Where you find one, you find the other. And where you don’t find one, you won’t find the other. Mother Teresa was correct when she said, “you can speak the Gospels in five words: “you did it for me” (MH 25:40). The rabbi Hillel, the Nazarene’s contemporary, put the same case negatively. A disciple asked him to sum up the whole law while standing on one leg. Immediately he took his right leg off the floor. He said simply, “what thou hated for thyself, do not do to thy neighbor. This is the entire law. Everything else is but a commentary on it. Go and learn! Hillel placed his right foot back in the floor and smiled at his astonished disciple.
In line with today’s gospel, the beloved Apostle John writes in his first letter: “if someone says he loves God, but hates his brother, he is a liar. For he cannot love God, whom he has not seen, if he does not love his brother, whom he has seen. The command that Christ has give us is this: whoever loves God must love his brother also” (1JN 4:20).
Today’s Gospel invites us to reach out in love to members of our own family and to reach out in love to our neighbor. Love of God and love of others. Everything else flows from that. St. Augus-tine said, “love God and do as you will for the soul trained in loving God will do nothing to offend the one who is beloved”. We are often overwhelmed by number of laws we are to follow. There are federal laws, state laws, and county laws, even insurance laws and policies. Added to these are the Christ laws which main body is the Code of Canaan Law. There are divine laws, natural laws, and civil laws. These makes us to ask like the scribe, what is it that God really wants us to do to please Him. And Jesus says, “It’s not so difficult, love God: love others”. The great theologian Karl Barth after writing volumes about God defined Him in five words - “the one who loves me”.
Dear friends in Christ, the gospel reading today invites us to apply the love of God and the love of neighbor in our everyday activities. It also invites us to ask one of the most important ques-tions we can ever ask ourselves. Is the love of God and the love of others seen in our actions? Or is our selfishness, our desire to take care of number one, even if that means using others, the real reason we want to do this or that? If our actions are prompted by the love of God, and the love of others, then “we are not far from the kingdom of God”. If on the contrary, we have to stand up for today’s Gospel is a challenge from Jesus Himself to do something about it. Let us apply the Law of love. Love of God and love of neighbor. When we do this, life becomes far less complicated. For anything that does not reflect the love of God and neighbor is just a leap into a void.
The Mystic Julien of Norwich sensed this back in her time, the late middle ages. She said that we simply need to conform to Christ and all will be well. Today’s Gospel concludes by saying that after the people heard what Jesus said to the scribe, no one dared ask him any more questions. All answers to the complications of life are found here: We are to love God with our whole heart, mind, and soul and love those He created in His image and likeness as we love that image within ourselves.
May the Lord enkindle in us the fire of His love and may He help us learn the true meaning of love. Amen.
