Huddled inside the storm door, were two children in ragged out-grown coats. "Any old papers, lady?" I was busy. I wanted to say no...until I looked down at their feet. Thin little sandals, sopped with sleet. "Come in, and I'll make you a cup of hot cocoa." There was no conversation. Their soggy sandals left marks upon the hearthstone. I served them cocoa and toast with jam to fortify them against the chill outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started again on my household budget... The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, "Lady...are you rich?" "Am I rich? Mercy, no!" I looked at my shabby slipcovers. The girl put her cup back in its saucer carefully. "Your cups match your saucers." Her voice was old, with a hunger that was not of the stomach. They left then, holding their bundles of papers against the wind. They hadn't said thank you. They didn't need to. They had done more than that. Plain blue pottery cups and saucers. But they matched. I tested the potatoes and stirred the gravy. Potatoes and brown gravy, a roof over our heads, my man with a good steady job: these things matched, too. I moved the chairs back from the fire and tidied the living room. The muddy prints of small sandals were still wet upon my hearth. I let them be. I want them there in case I ever forget again how very rich I am.

St. Michaels cemetery is now offering above ground interment for ashes.

Cremations now represent 60% of the burials at St Michael’s Cemetery. Families bury ashes in

standard grave plots, often two family members per plot, at an approximate cost of $2600 (for

the two family members including a headstone).

The cemetery has been serving parishioners for over 200 years. If we continue to use grave plots

for the burial of ashes, the cemetery will be full in 10 to 15 years.

In September St Michaels will be installing a new Columbarium for above ground internment of

ashes.

Each Columbarium niche can hold two standard size urns. There will be a total of 48 niches for

(96 urns).

St Michaels is now offering these niches for sale at a cost of $1,700. The placing of ashes and

inscription on the granite doors will be an additional $240 (at the time of burial).

The total cost for this new service will be approximately $1940.

Porcelain photo’s can also be purchased for an additional cost and placed on the doors.

The Columbarium will be in the new section of the cemetery, and the area will have lighting and

benches, providing a tranquil place to visit loved ones.

For more information on the new Columbarium, or any lots in the cemetery, please visit the

church office or call 778-5150. You can now make arrangements at the parish office to reserve a

niche in the Columbarium. Payment must be made in full at the time. Further inquiries can be

directed to Steven O’Reilly at 773-9380.

As people arrive for Mass, you are asked to follow ALL the instructions of the ushers.

Please bring a piece of paper with your name and phone number, we need to have this

information in case a contact trace needs to be made due to COVID-19; the ushers will

remind you of this, if you do not have this, THEY will right it down, and they will be

guiding you to the pews and for Communion, and at the end of Mass for the dismissal.

Given the need for social distancing, people will be seated in the first available pew from

the front as they arrive - this eliminates the need to walk around in search of an empty

pew which are not so easy to spot due to the spacing.

NOTE: it is important to bring the paper with the information already on it so the

entrances do not become ‘bottle-necked’ waiting; also, if you pick up a pen and write the

information, then that goes counter to the measures to reduce the risk of spread of the

virus.

If there are members of your ‘Family and Friends’ who will be arriving later, please

indicate this information to the ushers.

You are asked to remain in your pew at all times until directed to move by an usher;

however, the washrooms are now open.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

An elderly couple was worried because they kept forgetting things all the time. The doctor assured them there was nothing seriously wrong except old age, and suggested they carry a notebook and write things down so they wouldn't forget. Several days later, the old man got up to go to the kitchen. His wife said, "Dear, get me a bowl of ice cream while you're up." "Okay," he said. "...and put some chocolate syrup on it and a few cherries, too," she added. "You'd better write all this down." "I won't forget!" he said. Twenty minutes later he came back into the room and handed his wife a plate of scrambled eggs and bacon. She glared at him. "Now, I told you to write it down! I knew you'd forget." "What did I forget?" he asked. She replied, "My toast!"
