GIVING DURING the
Summer Season

Temporada de Verano“We’ve stopped delivery of the newspaper
and mail. We’ve taken the dog to the kennel. The iron is unplugged, and the stove is turned off. Is there anything else we need to do before we leave on vacation?”
Aren’t you forgetting something? Did you remember to write a check to your parish for the Sundays you’ll be gone?
“But I won’t be at Mass at home those Sundays. Can’t I skip those envelopes when I’m away?”
Even as we form the question in our mind, we know the answer. The prime reason for keeping up our pledge all summer long is that God doesn’t go on vacation. He continues to sustain us throughout the summer months, meeting us in His sacramental presence when we go to Mass wherever we travel. As God remains faithful to us during the summer, we are called to be faithful in our commitments to Him and our parish family, even during our vacation time.
God’s steadfastness in giving to us is the primary reason for us to respond by being faithful in our giving toward Him. But there is also a practical reason why we need to keep up our pledges of time, talent and treasure throughout the summer — the Church needs our involvement year-round.
Our generosity needs to be maintained throughout the summer, just as God maintains His generosity to us. Our stewardship is a response to God’s gifts. And God pours out His gifts and His grace upon us all year long.

Incluso cuando formamos la pregunta en nuestra mente, sabemos la respuesta. La razón principal para mantener nuestro compromiso durante todo el verano es que Dios no se va de vacaciones. A Letter From Our Pastor Una carta de nuestro pastor
By now, many schools across America have let out for the summer. Whether
or not we’re directly involved with schools — as students, teachers or parents — we find that the calendar for the school year also impacts our lives at work, at church and in our leisure time. And although some people are on vacation at any time of year, summer traditionally retains its place as the vacation season.
Vacations, no matter when or where we take them, provide us with a wonderful opportunity to refresh our lives by following a totally different daily pattern. A vacation also provides a good opportunity for us to make some permanent changes in our use of time. When we’re free from the demands of everyday life, this is a perfect chance to try something that is not part of our regular routine, such as spending a few minutes a day in prayer or meditation. It may have some lasting, positive results in fostering a stronger spiritual life.
Importantly, we must also remember that this is a time of year when our parish will be welcoming visitors who are on vacation themselves — whether they are visiting family, spending time in the area, or just happen to be passing through on the way to their next destination. So, let us all uphold the Stewardship Pillar of Hospitality and provide a warm welcome to those visiting our parish.
Be sure to worship at Mass, wherever you happen to be each Sunday. You’ll come back from vacation refreshed both emotionally and spiritually.

Puede tener algunos resultados positivos y duraderos para fomentar una vida espiritual más fuerte.
Es importante destacar que también debemos recordar que esta es una época del año en la que nuestra parroquia recibirá a los visitantes que estén de vacaciones, ya sea que visiten a su familia, pasen un tiempo en el área o simplemente pasen por el camino hacia su próximo destino. SPIRITUAL NOURISHMENT: The Extraordinary Ministers
of Holy Communion
There is a kind of hunger that is often ignored in our world — loneliness, anger, bitterness, feeling worthless
or unloved. These things are signs of a hunger that no natural food can satisfy. These are examples of spiritual hunger, and they can only be satisfied by spiritual food.
Along with priests and deacons, lay people within our parish serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, or EMHCs. Recognizing the spiritual hunger in their community, they choose to serve the parish by helping bring nourishment to those in need of

Parishioner Don Chaffin has been serving in this role for over a decade, and also serves as a sacristan, coordinating and training the EMHCs, among other things.
“God said, ‘Whoever eats my Body and drinks my Blood will have everlasting life,’” Don says. “It’s always my honor to give the Body or the Blood to our parishioners.”
Don has found his own faith growing since he has become involved in this role.
“My appreciation of the Eucharist has grown deeper since serving in this role,” he says. “It’s very humbling. This is the True Presence of Jesus Christ and we need to honor it and protect it.”

Parish Youth Looking Forward to Steubenville
Conference TripJohn and Kelly Harris, Religious Education teachers here
at St. Michael, are getting ready to accompany 20 of our parish’s young people to the upcoming Steubenville Conference.
“Go with an open heart and mind, and just experience what God has in store for you,” John says.
The conference is slated for July 12-14 at the John Q. Hammond Center on the campus of Missouri State University. The group, along with nine other adults, will travel by private vehicles. Registration took place in January and reached capacity.
The conference runs from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon and offers several speakers, live bands playing praise and worship music, and opportunities to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Last year, more than 2,800 confessions were heard.

Between 3,000 to 4,000 teens, Catholic and non-Catholic alike, in ninth through 12th grades attend the Steubenville Conference from Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, Missouri, Arkansas, and Illinois. As many as 40 priests attend, some accompanying groups, as well as seminarians.
“It’s a really neat experience for youth, especially Catholic youth,” John says, “They have praise and worship music that is not something they are used to in the structure of the Mass. It’s really neat for them to get the opportunity to interact with other Catholic youth. Coming from a fairly small parish, it’s great for our kids to see how many Catholic teens there are very involved in their Catholic faith.”

“It’s just become my family and something that I truly enjoy,” James says. “I give a lot of my time here and it just makes me feel good to know that I’m accomplishing something instead of just sitting around and watching TV. And when you feel like that, I think that joy just spreads. People notice it and they start to want some of that joy too.”
Thanks to stewardship, James says he has come to truly love Christ and His Church. He feels grateful to be part of the St. Michael’s parish family and hopes to continue giving of himself for many more years to come.
