KEEP IN MIND that the cr itical moral imperative at the moment is for the leaders of the world to work for peace. All leaders are called to serve as statesmen responsible for the common good of their own na-tion and at the same time for the wellbeing of the whole world. (Vatican Council II). “Me-first” divides nations, causes hostility, and creates distrust. Nuclear war will destroy humanity. The Gospel calls us to a change of heart de-voted to the hard work of securing honest and binding agreements for peace rooted in justice.

Joke of the Day!
Six legged turkey
A turkey farmer was always experimenting with breed-ing to perfect a better turkey. His family was fond of the leg portion for dinner but there never was enough legs for everyone. After many frustrating attempts, the farmer was relating the results of his efforts to his friends down at the general store.
“Well, I finally did it! I bred a turkey that has 6 legs!” said the farmer.
They all asked the farmer how it tasted.
“I don’t know,” said the farmer. “I never could catch the darn thing!”
In all things give thanks
There was a four year old boy who was asked to return thanks before a Thanksgiving dinner. The family mem-bers bowed their heads in expectation. He began his prayer thanking God for all his friends.
Then he thanked God for mommy and daddy, brother, sister, grandma and grandpa and all his aunts and uncle.
Then he began to thank God for the food. He gave thanks for the turkey, the dressing, the salad, the cran-berry sauce, the pies and cakes and even the Cool Whip.
Then he paused and everyone waited and waited. After a long silence, the young fellow looked up at his mother and asked, “If I thank God for the broccoli, won’t he know I’m lying?”
Four old Catholic women sit and brag about their sons. The first Catholic woman tells her friends, "My son is a priest. When he walks into a room, everyone calls him 'Father'." The second Catholic woman chirps, "My son is a bish-op. Whenever he walks into a room, people call him 'Your Grace'." The third Catholic mother says, "My son is a cardinal. Whenever he walks into a room, he's called 'Your Emi-nence'." The fourth Catholic woman says, "My incredibly hand-some son is 6' 2 with broad, square shoulders, good manners and impeccable style. Whenever he walks into a room, women say, 'Oh my God!'"
A little girl became restless as the preacher 's sermon dragged on and on.
Finally, she leaned over to her mother and whis-pered, "Mommy, if we give him the money now, will he let us go?"
Catechism classes are currently collecting non perishable foods to feed the hungry this holiday season. Please place your donations in the barrel located in the vestibule (front of church).

PERPETUAL ADORATION NEEDS YOUR HELP
We are in the process of registering volunteers for Perpetual Adoration and we ask all members of our Parish to consider. We have registration forms un-der the podium sign at the vestibule of the church. There is information attached to help you understand what Adoration is.
We offer shared hours for those who might consider a long term commitment. We also are in great need of substitute volunteers - those who would be avail-able to take the place of a permanent adorer who is ill or on vacation. Time periods convenient to you are offered. We urge you to check the bulletin board for substitute needs as well.
All of our current Permanent Adorers are required to re-register to update our data. All information submitted by current and new volunteers is strictly confidential. Our deadline is January 1, 2018.
Please consider this beautiful ministry. Your blessings from Our Lord are bountiful. Call Rob-erta, Jackie (Spanish) or Jan for questions and thank you.
Everyone is invited to A Joy-Filled Christmas music program on Saturday, December 9th at 6:00pm at St. Mary's High School at 5648 N. El Dorado St. in Stockton. This free event celebrates the joy of Christ-mas through music performed by local professional musicians, along with performances by student bands and choir. You don't want to miss this one! Gospel Reflection:
What gifts are ours to multiply?
The talent the gospel parable talks about is an amount of money, not a personal ability or aptitude. One tal-ent is equivalent to 6,000 denarii. One denarius was a day’s wage for the ordinary worker in Jesus’ time.
Anyone who worked six days a week for one denarius each day earned 340 denarii a year. To be entrusted with one talent is to have at one’s disposal the earning of an ordinary laborer for 17 years. The five talents the first servant receives would take 85 years for the ordinary laborer to earn.
What might be a wage today compa-rable to the one denarius per day a laborer earned in the first century? On a $10-an-hour job, a worker to-day earns around $20,000 per year. The equivalent of one talent or 17 years of earnings at $20,000 per year is $340,000. This is the amount the master entrusts to the third servant. The master entrusts the first servant with five times that amount, $1,700,000.
The master in Jesus’ parable is not giving the servants a pittance to test their trustworthiness to handle his affairs. They have received a wind-fall, like winning the lottery. The priceless windfall each of us has re-ceived is life itself.
The word talent, although it refers to an amount of money, is the same word in English that refers to our personal abilities and gifts, to all our
natural endowments and the qualities our families have nurtured in us. All of us have some artistic, athletic, and musical ability; some of us have dis-tinctive gifts in various areas of ca-pability. One can teach, another ad-minister, another inspire others.
Both the first and second servants in the gospel receive amounts of money equal to the earning of one or more lifetimes. This fact and the double meaning of the word talent urge us who hear the parable to identify the money amounts with all that God entrusts to us in giving us life, unique gifts, and family and friends whose lives we share.
We each have life without having caused ourselves to be. Our ancestors have invested themselves in relation-ships and efforts that bring us to be. Jesus invested his life in the human race, identifying with us totally unto death, opening to us all we can be-come in God. How do we use these extravagant down payments on our-selves? Sunday’s parable calls us to multiply the gifts entrusted to us.
The parable of the talents follows the rule of three, which is familiar in folk tales and jokes. This rule for plotting stories sets up a pattern in two events or two characters which a third event or character breaks. The rule of three focuses the point of the story on the exception to the pattern.
In the plot of Sunday’s parable three servants receive huge but different sums of money. The first two serv-
ants set up a pattern; both immedi-ately invest the money and double it. The third servant breaks the pattern by going off and burying the money.
At this halfway point in the parable, the servant who has received the least money, as suited his ability, had done the least with it. None of the three have squandered their money. The parable doesn’t tell us why the third servant buried the talent, nor how the first two so easily doubled theirs.
When the master returns, the first two servants again set up a pattern which the third breaks. Both an-nounce they have double the money entrusted to them. Both receive the same praise and promise of future responsibility. The master welcomes them into his hoy.
However, the parable focuses on the third servant who, when he faces the master, finally articulates his motives for burying the money. His failure to invest the money was not his fault, he says, but the master’s. His mas-ter’s harshness and readiness to take what was not his made the servant too afraid to use the money.
The master in the parable has no sympathy for the third servant’s fear or blaming but condemns his lazi-ness and orders him cast outside the community of joy to which he has welcomed the two other servants. The servant who already has ten tal-ents gets this man’s one.
