Fr. Tom’s Message

A woman received a letter from a friend and a crisp ten dollar bill fell out. She was pleasantly surprised but as she read the letter her eyes were distracted by the movement of a shabbily dressed stranger. She could not get him out of her mind. Thinking he must be in greater financial distress than she was she slipped the bill into an envelope on which she quickly penned the words, “Don’t Despair.” She threw it out the window and the stranger picked it up – read it, looked up and smiled and he tipped his hat. The next day she was about to leave the house when a knock came to her door. It was the shabbily dressed man smiling as he handed her a roll of bills. When she asked what they were for, he replied, “That’s the sixty sixty bucks you won. “Don’t Despair” paid five to one.

So why do good for others who may or may not reward you for your efforts? There is obviously only one motivation and that is because you are a full lover of Jesus Christ. You see there are three characteristics that Jesus had that you and I desperately need. The first of these is compassion. More than anything else Jesus was motivated by compassion for human beings. That’s why He came to earth – to experience what it means to be a human and to demonstrate God’s love for the “Least and the Lost.” The overarching attitude to almost everyone He encountered was compassion. If we are going to take up our cross and walk in His footsteps we too will need to see the world through eyes of compassion. But there was a second characteristic which Jesus had which allowed Him to take up His cross and give His life for us. Jesus had courage. It takes compassion to be His follower and courage to put it into practice. Life can have some strange twists and turns. We cannot choose the situations we will be thrown into. Sometimes we have to be very brave to follow Jesus. However there is one more characteristic of Jesus that we need in order to follow Him: we need calmness of Spirit. It is a calmness that comes when you know in God’s world life conquers death, love conquers hate, and courage conquers cowardice. These then are three characteristics in Christ that you and I desperately need: compassion for others, courage to live out that compassion and calmness of spirit because we believe Jesus’ words that “Whoever loses their life for Me and for the gospel will save it!” My prayers that we will all be emulators of Jesus! God Love and Bless You all!

Heather Devaney’s winning essay on “How your Catholic Faith has prepared you for your future.”

As a young child, I was brought to church without the understanding of how one day my Catholic Faith would not only provide me a meaning but truly define who I am, what I believe and how I choose to live my life and plan my future.

My family moved to Jackson when I was just 3 months old. We did not have any family local or friends in town. My parents both traveled to work weekdays with over an hour commute each direction. Weekends were spent traveling back to our home town to gather with friends and family. On a weekly basis this visit always included attending Sunday mass with my grandparents, aunt, uncle and cousins. We attended mass not only in the church where my brother and I were baptized but this was also where my parents were married a few years earlier and also where my mom grew up and made each of her sacraments. After mass we would all go to my grandparents where my grandpa would always have a special craft project for us and the day would end with some of my grandma’s delicious meals. I have some of my greatest memories as a child getting to spend time with my family as often as we did. As time passed our family grew with the addition of my younger brother and sister. As much as we enjoyed our trips to visit family my parents realized we needed to transition to our new community and decided to join St. Monica’s Church.

I’m sure there was uncertainty to be in a new community but from my memories my parents seemed to make friends quite quickly. I recall them telling family that St. Monica’s was just the right fit for us and had many of the small parish activities that we enjoyed. Some of these memories include singing at the Christmas Eve Children’s mass, listening to the homily while getting to sit up at the alter and of course donut Sunday!

As I write these memories I realize how much my Catholic Faith has had such a positive influence on my childhood. My years in CCD have taught me my prayers, and the teachings of Jesus but the community and my family have instilled in me the true meaning of living as a Christian. Being a Christian is so much more than attending mass. I now know through all I have learned and witnessed from my family and church community what it means to be a Christian. A Christian loves their family unconditionally, takes time to help others and gives back to the community. I have volunteered in many different activities in my community but one I am most proud of is being a coach for our local youth lacrosse program. I have also taken time to visit seniors at the nursing home, been an ear to friends that just need to talk, helped stock the food panty and prepared and served food to those in need.

I have chosen to continue my education at Georgian Court University. While visiting many colleges around GCU stood out as it is a catholic school that offers many great volunteer opportunities for its students. They also have students log the hours and provide recognition to those that dedicate their time to others. Choosing a school that offers this type of positive influence was very important for me as this is what being a Christian is all about.

Although I am still young I feel that my Catholicfidsoiefieowoiwefiiowiefiowiefioweifowiefiewfiwoeife Faith has been instilled in who I havefwsefioowiefiwefiweifoiwefwefefwekfkewfkwefkwfke grown to be and will continue for my lifetime.ffffdssefjwjefwkejfkwjefkwjefkwjefkwjefkwefkwefkwfkwefkwkwkwwfejjjjjj

REBOOT! Presented by Chris

Stefanick, is a high-energy, two-hour renewal event designed to bring a brand new energy and vitality to your parish community. The event has two parts:

(1) It begins with an inspirational, high-energy unpacking of the genius of the heart of the Gospel, revealing its power and real beauty. The experience is fresh and compelling, and is like hearing the Gospel for the first time all over again! People commonly say: “THAT reminded me – all over again – why I ever wanted to be a Christian, to be a Catholic!” There is a lot of laughter, and there are some real tears. And

(2) It finishes strong with real-life, practical, “can-do” ways of applying the genius of the Gospel in everyday life. From prayer and spirituality, to work, dating, marriage, parenting, health and more: there is no part of a person’s life that will be left untouched.

Family of the Month Chris & Eleanore Althaver

Our family of the month is the Althaver Family. Chris, Eleanore, Emma, Ashley & James were a huge part of the vacation bible school week, which was a great success. I know personally since both of my kids attended this camp and were super excited to tell me what they did each day. They are already looking forward to next year’s camp. Again keep up the good work for everything your family does for St. Monica's church.

God Bless Your Grand Knight, Lane Morell
