General Informa on From the desk of Father Barnes Many of our students will receive Jesus truly present in the Most Holy Eucharist this weekend for the first me! Congratula ons! Just as we need food to sustain our bodies and stay healthy, we need this spiritual food in order to be able to walk the spiritual journey. Hence, fast forward many years to the end of our lives. When we visit people who are preparing to go before the Lord, we offer them Communion as Via cum, spiritual food for the journey through death. We again need this spiritual food to strengthen us through the dying process and it is a great consola on for people at this point in life to know that God is journeying with them and in them. So brothers and sisters, remember that First Holy Communion is just the first of many, many Communions! We are too weak to try to walk this journey on our own strength. We need God’s help and the weekly recep on of Holy Communion is cri cal for our spiritual well being. Parents, your role in raising your children in the faith will con nue to be of upmost importance, especially your witness and your frequent recep on of Holy Communion, which demonstrates that you understand how important it is to journey with God through all of the ups and downs of real life. Thank you parents for fulfilling your duty of raising your children in the faith, and congratula ons to all of our first communicants. God loves you so much that He shares Himself with you!

Q & A What is the best age for first Communion? When we were kids, we received it in first grade. Many Catholics remember their first Communion and all the special things that surrounded that day-the special clothes, the rela ves, the excitement, the nuns who directed every-thing, and feeling so important and grown-up. Most of all they remember the special joy of receiving Jesus for the first
me. It is touching to see the sincerity and intensity of the children's prayers and sense of holiness. They are so solemn and serious as they prepare for and receive the sacrament for the first me. The discussion about the best age for Communion, like confir-ma on, is ongoing and valid arguments are given for each opinion. Overall, the agreement is that children should re-ceive their first Communion when they reach the "age of rea-son," i. e., the ability to dis nguish right from wrong and when they can understand the difference between bread and the Eucharist. Most parishes have first Communion in the second or third grade. In any event, a good prepara on pro-gram, a posi ve experience of the church community, and a strong sense of belonging are important steps in helping chil-dren appreciate the importance of the sacrament in their lives and the life of the church. Everyday Stewardship Parents of young children spend a lot of me teaching them manners. It is part of the socializa on process in which three-, four-, and five-year-olds learn to come outside of themselves. They begin to recognize that there are others in the world, and that unlike in their infancy when all a en on was focused on them, they now discover that they must interact with others who also have a claim on the social order. By teaching young children not only the words, but also the concepts of "please" and "thank you," parents assist their youngsters in finding a place in society. Children learn that they need to share, that not everything belongs to them. They discover that they must interact with others to get things to work properly. "Please" and "thank you" acknowledges that outsiders also have rights. All this brings us to Sunday's Gospel. There are only a few plac-es in the New Testament in which we actually hear Jesus pray. The Gospel today is one of those. As he addresses the Father he prays not only for the disciples gathered with him at the Last Supper, but he also prays for us. He asks that we may be one and that we may be brought to perfec on. Across two thousand years of me, Jesus is asking his Father to take care of us today! "Please" and "thank you" are key words in prayer. They are actually part of three of the four tradi onal forms of prayer. Pe on (asking for ourselves) and Intercession (asking on be-half of others) are "please." A prayer of thanksgiving is, of course, "thank you." The fourth type of prayer is adora on or praise. In his prayer, Jesus is interceding for us with his Father. It is the kind of prayer we can emulate, ge ng us out of our-selves as we ask God to be a en ve to the needs of so many others in this world. Liturgical Publica ons, Inc.

The Chicken Cookout and Raffle held every year on Fathers’ Day is one of the largest fundraisers for St. Nicholas parish and provides a day of fellowship and fun for everyone!
Some of you who may be new to our parish might be wonder-ing, "why should we donate to the Big Ticket Raffle"? Every cash gi for the raffle is donated. So everything we make on
cket sales is all profit. Please consider dona ng either as a dona on from your family or business and anything works. Cash dona ons are needed. Please mail your cash dona ons to the parish office, put into the drop box outside the parish office, or put into the Sunday collec on. Dona ons will be ac-cepted through Wednesday, May 4th. Dead Theologians Society: Grades 9-12 are invited to a end the mee ng of the Dead Theologians Society. The next mee ng is Sunday, May. 15, from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at the St. Nicholas Campus. (Confirma on students, this will count for one Faith Enrichment event.)
Dear parishioners of St. Nicholas, Immaculate Concep on, & Holy Trinity, First, thank you so very much for your ongoing support; be-cause of your efforts and sacrifice the debt is down to $867,193. We have an addi onal $155,000 on reserve for fu-ture payments. It is with enthusiasm that we, the LNMV CEC board, kick off what we are hoping will be our FINAL capital campaign to pay off the debt owed on our Catholic Educa on Center. True to this enthusiasm, we have decided to start our fundraising efforts with a steak fry dinner. Please join us on Saturday, May 7, at 6 p.m. in celebra on of how far we’ve come as we prayerfully look to the goals that remain. We hope to burn the mortgage, not the steaks. Join us for entertainment, drinks, fellowship, and to hear our plans to pay off our mortgage. A generous donor has paid for the event expenses. All proceeds from the event will go directly to the principle of our loan. We are going to run this campaign without hiring a consultant which allows all dona-
ons to be applied to the mortgage. Advance cket prices are $10 per person and $25 at the door. This covers the steak dinner, 2 drinks, and entertainment. Mu-sic donated by The Charlie S cha Band. Guests will be given the opportunity to make their pledges at this, the first opportunity of our campaign, or to prayerfully consider it over the coming weeks. Those who offer pledges on May 7th will not be contacted personally again in this cam-paign. Come and join the party, for food, fellowship, entertainment, and help us with our plan to burn the mortgage. For further informa on, please contact Tom Streefland at 952-652-2349.
The St. Nicholas Pro-Life Commi ee will be offering flowering plants next weekend, Mothers' Day, in honor of all mothers, grandmothers, wives, aunts, sisters, & friends, as we celebrate and thank those in our lives who have shown us the love and care of a mom. There will be an African violet plant package (fresh violet plant in a four-inch decorated pot with "Thanks Mom for Life" bu on--suggested dona on $5.00), and a mini Rose bush package (Mini Rose bush in a four-inch pot with "Thanks Mom for Life" bu on--suggested dona on $7.00).
Help spread this posi ve, life-affirming message by thanking the mothers in our church community. You will bring a smile to their face!
