AUGUST 1-31, 2013
FROM FATHER’S DESK
Dear faithful and friends of St. Nicholas,
At the end of June our Diocese held its 50th
Diocesan Conference which was hosted by Sts. Cyril and
Methody Church in Granite City, IL. The parishes of the Diocese were represented by clergy and lay delegates
and we were led in the Conference by Bishop Alexander. This Conference was his first after being our Bishop
for a full year. In his report he told us that he has visited all the parishes of the Diocese at least once (some more
than once) and he has formed some impressions of the Diocese. He noted that the Diocese is very small and while
some parishes are flourishing, others, even most, find themselves often in cities where industries have fled and
the young people have also fled seeking work leaving the communities, in consequence, facing a grim
demographic.
He noted that the Diocesan Treasurer, Steve Timofeev, would point these out regarding sustainability and
the interest on the monies left to the Diocese by Archbishop Kyrill. Even with the interest of $80,000 the budget
for 2013-2014 is in the red. Later in the Conference the Bishop spoke to a point made by one of the delegates
about a budget of $124,000 and parish assessments of $29,000 as not a plan for the future. He asked for further
reflection “What will we do if we lived within a budget? What are we going to do about it, what can we do about
it?” Bishop Alexander noted that Archbishop Kyrill’s parsimony was to a purpose: to support of not only this
Diocese but also his other Diocese, Pittsburgh. The Vladyka spoke of his gratitude for Archbishop Kyrill and his
foresight.
Moving from this the Bishop spoke of the challenge we face as a Diocese: how do we increase? He
continued that on the one hand the increase comes from God’s hand. If God should choose not to increase us, we
will fade and we need to pray Him to assist us. But again along these lines, he had some good news. He asked
that the Conference officially receive into our Diocese a new mission church in Alliance, Ohio. Protodeacon
James Gresh, clergy-in-charge, represented them at the meeting. The Bishop noted that this is a very promising
development. He added that there is a second possibly promising development in western Iowa, in Ames, where
he has already given Fr. Martin Watt an antimension to conduct services. The Bishop stated that he is waiting to
see that he can sufficiently establish himself and his family before formally establish this second mission. (The
mission in Alliance, OH was officially received into the Diocese at this Conference and the Conference delegated
to the Bishop the authority to receive any new missions in accordance with the mission guidelines approved at
the same meeting).
Bishop Alexander continued that at last year’s conference he asked: quo vadis? Where are you going?
Where do you want to go? He said he thinks it has been partially answered with the one new mission and a
second in the offing. He then reflected on the presentation made to the delegates by Eric Shanburn of FOCUS,
an Orthodox charitable organization under the auspices of the Assembly of Orthodox Bishops. The Bishop said
that helping the poor and those in need as noted by Mr. Shanburn is another direction we want to go. The
Bishop spoke of our parishes in depressed cities, suffering towns and cities in the middle of a depression where
the stock market goes up but does not affect Joe Lunchbox who has a declining wage or none at all. The Bishop
made clear that Mr. Shanburn’s presentation is Christianity, the Gospels, the Prophets, the Torah, the will of
God. The Bishop urged that we can assist other efforts for those in need in our troubled cities and, who knows,
this will bring God’s blessing. The Bishop finished by saying even if this good work does not bring a blessing it
must be done.
In his concluding remarks at the Conference the Bishop spoke to clergy matters: Fr. Kirill Antonoff fell
asleep in the Lord and he celebrated his funeral in March. Fr. James Jorgenson retired from St. Paul Cathedral
in Dearborn Heights, MI and moved to Petaluma, CA. Fr. Robert Royer has taken Fr. Jorgenson’s place in
Dearborn Heights. Fr. Deacon John Manutes moved to Colorado in retirement and has been released to the
Diocese of the West. The Bishop said he fulfilled a years’ long desideratum in laying hands on Professor Silviu
Bunta ordaining him as deacon and priest at St. Nicholas Church in Fort Wayne, IN. Fr. Silviu continues to
fulfill his function as professor at the University of Dayton and serves as supply priest and featured speaker at
conferences, retreats and general spiritual upkeep. The Bishop spoke of Fr. Silviu’s value to us regarding
continuing clergy education. He also stated that we lost Presvytera Vera Nickoloff in August of last year. Our
Diocese has gained Protodeacon James Gresh as clergy-in-charge of the new mission in Alliance, OH and also Fr.
Marty Watt who, all things going well, will be at our mission in Ames, IA.
In concluding his report Bishop Alexander left us with that: notes of kind of grimness, notes also of hope
and of challenge that we all must work together and address asking God to help us. May we, as a parish of the
Diocese, work together, asking God’s help, as we seek to help the poor and those in need in imitation of our Lord
Jesus Christ. With love in Christ,

MOLEBEN TO THE THEOTOKOS The fast for the Dormition of the Theotokos begins on August 1. As part
of our preparation for the Dormition of the Theotokos, we will celebrate the Moleben to the Theotokos on
Wednesday, August 7 at 7 pm at the Shrine. Our shrine is dedicated to the Icon of the Mother of God of Iveron
which is venerated on Mount Athos. We will offer up petitions to the Theotokos, praying for the health of the
sick. Please join us in celebration and prayerful petition at these services to the Mother of God. “A mother’s
prayer is a powerful means for obtaining the favor of the Master.” (Theotokion of the Sixth Hour)
SHRINE FEAST The Sunday after the Dormition is the feast of our shrine to the Theotokos. This year the date
will be Sunday, August 18. The Divine Liturgy will begin with the procession with the icon of our Lady of
Iveron at 9:45 am. Comfortable chairs will be available for the Divine Liturgy.
CHURCH LOCATOR When you are traveling this summer and need to find a church to attend, check out
http://orthodoxyinamerica.org and click on the menu bar listed “Church Locator”. Then you can find a church
complete with address and contact information.
SUMMER DAYS we need your help! As we continue the summer months, many parishioners are away on
vacation or unable to attend due to ill health or travel. Attendance at Sunday Liturgy is much lower now.
During the summer, our parish, like many others, experiences a reduction in donations, yet the expenses of the
church continue. Be a good and faithful steward and fill those empty envelopes that are waiting for you to fill
them. Please be sacrificial in your stewardship. And remember: even when you’re away, your parish family
prays at every service for your safe journey and continued health!
SUNDAY DONUT PICK-UP we are in need
of volunteers to help pick up donuts Sunday
mornings on a regular basis. If we do not
have volunteers to help there will be NO
donuts, just coffee and juice. If you are able
to assist please see Debbie so that we can
work out a schedule.
