1ST Singapore Piano Competition

Message

We are proud to present the 1st Kawai Singapore Piano Competition, a preliminary selection competition for the 4th Kawai Asia Piano Competition to be held in Wuhan, China, in July this year.

Over the next two days, we will be hearing aspiring pianists from Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, performing not only solo works, but piano duets and two-piano pieces as well. Contestants will compete only with those from their own countries.

This year, we are honoured to have three very distinguished pianists on our adjudicating panel: Prof. Andrew Ma from Hong Kong, Prof. Iswargia Sudarno from Indonesia, and Prof. Jinho Kim from South Korea/U.S.A.

We will be awarding Gold, Silver, Bronze and Encouragement Prizes, and those who win the Gold Prize will proceed to the final round in Wuhan.

We are also grateful to have the support and sponsorship of MS Works and Kawai Singapore. Mr. Michael Thien, Director of MS Works, and his team have worked tirelessly to make this event run smoothly.

Finally, I wish each and every competitor the very best, and I hope we can all forge new friendships through this event.

Benjamin Loh

Jinho Kim, an Korean American, was born in Seoul. He moved with his family to the US at the age of 16 as his parents sought better education for him and his three siblings.

Subsequently he received his Bachelor and Master degrees from the Juilliard.

Jinho had always shown great love and close affinity toward the piano since he was a young boy. His passion for piano only grows and deepens. He started piano lessons at 8 unlike many of his peers at a much younger age of 4 or 5 years old.

He found learning piano challenging, intriguing, and most satisfying. He also finds solace listening to recordings of various musicians.

Prior to embarking on this highly demanding career as performing pianist, Jinho studied with teachers from the last few great Russian pianists of the 20th Century. These mentors, Nadia Reisenberg, Alexander Edelman, Daniel Pollak, and Oxana Yablonskaya inspired him, gave him solid training and most importantly imparted the musicianship which he treasures and carries it with him to this day.

Currently he is an Artist in Residence at the LaSalle College of the Arts. Jinho performed with SSO in 2000 the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto and in 2005, Chopin Concertos No.1 & 2.
