STATISTICAL COMPARISON GAME NOTESGusties Take To Gridiron For 97th Season... The Gustavus football team is now in its 97th season in 2013. Over the previous 96-plus years, the Gusties have compiled a record of 468-336-21, including a record of 216-122-8 in St. Peter. With 22 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) championships, Gustavus has claimed the second-most league titles in the 93-year history of the conference. Only Saint John’s (31) has claimed more MIAC championships.

Follow The Gusties On KNUJ... KNUJ AM 860 out of New Ulm, Minnesota will once again broadcast all ten Gustavus regular season football games. The voice of the Golden Gusties Tom Wheeler will handle the play-by-play duties for the eighth consecutive season. Wheeler will once again be joined by 1984 Gustavus graduate and former Gustie football player Ken Ericson on the live call of this year’s games. Fans can listen to the KNUJ broadcasts on the Internet through the Gustavus Athletics website. In addition, Gustavus will once again video stream all home games for viewing on your computer and portable internet device through GameCentral by Stretch Internet. GameCentral is available at: http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/gac.portal#.

Calling All Captains... Of over 5,000 student-athletes who have played football for Gustavus in the 97-year history of the program, only 188 have earned the privilege to serve as team captain. Peter Haugen’s captains this season include seniors Torey Asao, Beau Bachman, Jeffrey Dubose, David Gschneidner, and Lyle Opdahl.

Head Coach Peter Haugen shown with this season’s five captains.

Notes

Senior Leadership... With 22 seniors on this year’s squad, the Gustavus roster features the fourth-most seniors on any Gustie football team in the last 20 years. The 2003 (28), 2002 (26), and 2011 (23) teams are the only three squads during that span to have more seniors wearing Black and Gold. This year’s senior class features four offensive linemen, three wide receivers, two running backs, and two tight ends from the offensive side of the ball, while the defense features five defensive backs, four defensive linemen, and two linebackers.

Gustie Football Around The Globe... The 2013 Gustavus football team features a total of 107 players from nine different states and, for the second time in the last four years, a second country outside the United States. Of those 107 players, 93 claim Minnesota as their native state. A combined four players call Kansas home, while one player each hails from California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Mexico also makes its presence felt on this year’s roster as it is the homeland of three Gusties, all of whom hail from Cancun.

GUSTAVUS RECORD WHEN...

Notes

Game 3 . September 28 . St. Olaf 3

The Series... Saturday’s game marks the 60th meeting between Gustavus and St. Olaf on the gridiron. The Gusties hold the upper hand in the all-time series with a record of 34-25. However, St. Olaf has had Gustavus’ number as of late, rattling off 10 straight victories in the series. The last time the Gusties beat the Oles was on Saturday, Nov. 7th, of the 2002 season in a 24-23 win played at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis. Last season when these two teams met in Northfield, St. Olaf came away with a 17-14 victory. The Oles extended a 7-0 halftime lead to 14-0 on a third quarter touchdown pass from Dan Dobson to Jake Schmiesing before the Gusties pushed back with a four-yard touchdown run by quarterback Muresuk Mena early in the fourth to bring the score to 14-7. St. Olaf responded with a 24-yard field goal by Lucas Wainman to extend its lead to 17-7. Although Gustavus cut the lead to 17-14 on a 58-yard touchdown run by Mena with 2:18 left to play, St. Olaf was able to grind away the remaining minutes and hold on for the three-point win.

Meet the Head Coaches... Gustavus Head Coach Peter Haugen is in his fifth season at the helm of the Gustavus football program. Haugen has a combined record of 14-28 in his first four-plus seasons. A graduate of Bethel University, Haugen was the head coach at Washburn High School in Minneapolis prior to coming to Gustavus. On the other sideline, St. Olaf Head Coach Craig Stern is in his first season at the head of the Ole football program. Stern joined the St. Olaf staff as the recruiting coordinator and defensive backs coach in 2004 before being named assistant head coach in 2010 and ultimately head coach on Feb. 8th of this year.

Scouting The Gusties... The Gustavus football team enters Saturday’s contest coming off a heartbreaking 19-16 loss at the hands of Augsburg College on Saturday, Sept. 21st in Minneapolis. The Gusties led for nearly 44 minutes before surrendering the lead to the Auggies with just 2:37 to play. Trailing 16-12 with 3:28 left in the game, the Auggies drove 78 yards in four plays and 51 seconds to score the go-ahead touchdown. Augsburg capped the game-winning drive with a 46-yard touchdown pass on a screen from quarterback Ayrton Scott to running back Phil Putratz. Gustavus had one final shot with just over two minutes remaining, but a fumble on the first play of its final possession gave the ball back to the Auggies, who were able to drain the

remaining time left on the clock.

Through two games, Jeffrey Dubose has been the workhorse of the Gustavus offense. The senior captain has rushed for four touchdowns and 302 yards on 59 attempts, averaging 151 yards per game and 5.1 yards per carry. Through the air, quarterback Mitch Hendricks has completed 39 of 65 passes (60%) for 322 yards and has yet to throw a touchdown. His favorite target has been Phillip Butler, who has caught 15 passes for 87 yards.

Defensively, Gustavus is allowing an average of 318 total yards per game, 79 yards on the ground and 239 yards through the air. The Gustie defense has five takeaways through the first two games, intercepting three passes and recovering two fumbles. Matt Keller leads the team in total tackles with 15 (5 solo), while Joe Haas and Cameron Cropsey each have 13 (5 solo).

Scouting The Oles... The St. Olaf football team comes into today hungry for a win after consecutive losses to Luther (20-13) and Concordia (33-29). In St. Olaf’s most recent loss, Concordia shot out to an early 13-0 lead in the first quarter and would never look back. Although the Oles responded with a touchdown at the end of the first quarter, the Cobbers would extend their lead to 26-14 heading into halftime. St. Olaf cut that lead to 26-21 midway through the third, but a Concordia touchdown with 6:38 left in the fourth would prove to be enough, as St. Olaf could only score once more in the 33-29 loss.

For the season, Penz has completed 57 of 92 passes (62%) for 787 yards and six touchdowns along with four interceptions. His top two targets, Stephen Asp and Jake Schmiesing, have caught 19 and 14 passes, respectively. Asp has amassed 243 yards and one touchdown, while Schmiesing has racked up 304 yards with five touchdowns.

On defense, St. Olaf is allowing an average of 148.7 yards rushing and 144.7 yards passing for a total of 293.3 yards per game. The Oles lead the league in fumble recoveries with six as Derek Henle, David Jean, and Ethan Lunning each have two. Henle leads the St. Olaf defense with 20 tackles (13 solo), while Colin Brown follows with 18 (9 solo).

Homecoming... Gustavus is celebrating its 89th Homecoming on Saturday, continuing a tradition started on Nov. 8, 1924, when the Gusties defeated Saint John’s 33-0 on Hallander Field. Gustavus has enjoyed a

good deal of success on Homecoming Day, compiling an all-time record of 60-26-2. After suffering a 16-0 loss to Valley City State last season, the Gusties are looking for their first Homecoming victory since a 34-30 win over Pacific Lutheran in 2009. In 88 Homecoming contests, Gustavus has compiled a 54-25-2 record against conference opponents, including a 6-4 mark against St. Olaf. The last meeting between these two teams on Gustavus’ Homecoming came on Saturday, Sept. 25th, of the 2010 season and resulted in a 19-14 win for St. Olaf. The loss was a heartbreaker for the Gusties, as St. Olaf’s Leon Clark scored a touchdown on a two-yard run with just 29 seconds remaining to lift the Oles to victory. The first time these two squads squared off on Homecoming Saturday was just the third-ever Homecoming at Gustavus in 1926. The Gusties narrowly escaped that contest with a 7-0 win.

Dubose Has Career Day... To say that senior running back Jeffrey Dubose had a career day last Saturday at Augsburg would be an understatement. Dubose carried the ball 37 times for 227 yards, both of which were career highs, to go along with two touchdowns on the day. Dubose’s 37 carries ties the Gustavus record for rushing attempts in a game held by Craig Bitter `83 and Hall-of-Famer Brian Brekke `95. Bitter set the record in 1981 against Bethel and Brekke later matched his performance in 1994 against St. Thomas. Dubose’s 227 rushing yards ranks seventh on the Gustavus all-time single game rushing yards list, just 31 yards shy of the record of 258 yards set by Ray Wilson `09 against Augsburg on Oct. 25, 2008. To top it all off, Jeffrey’s 227-yard performance boosted him into the top 10 on the all-time career rushing yards list, surpassing Scott Anderson `92 and Kevin Grussing `96 to take over ninth place with 2,262 yards. He now sits just 17 yards behind Don Housken `56, who stands eighth.

Fourth Quarter Woes... After seeing a 21-point lead shrink to seven points in the fourth quarter of the season-opener and allowing a go-ahead touchdown in the final minutes of last Saturday’s loss to Augsburg, Gustavus has had its fair share of troubles in the fourth quarter so far this season. Through two games, the Gusties have outscored their opponents 44-40, including a 44-19 advantage over the first three quarters. However, Gustavus has been outscored 21-0 in the fourth and final frame, a trend that the Gusties will look to reverse on Saturday afternoon.

Game 3 . September 28 . St. Olaf

Notes

Scoop And Score... In the second quarter of last Saturday’s game at Augsburg, a rare turn of events led to a defensive two-point conversion for the Gusties. Following an Augsburg touchdown, Gustavus cornerback Torey Asao blocked the extra point. Bau Bachman proceeded to scoop the ball up and take it 85 yards to the endzone to give the Gusties a two-point conversion. The last time that the rare play happened in a Gustavus game was on Nov. 13th, 1998, when Adam Laliberte of Saint John’s returned a fumbled two-point conversion try to the house in a Johnnie 36-13 win. The Gusties have not returned a point-after try to the endzone in the last 20 years.

Let It Fly... After gaining 222 yards passing and completing 64.2 percent of its passes in the season-opening win over Simpson, Gustavus threw for just 100 yards with a 50 percent completion rate last weekend in Minneapolis. The Gusties also have yet to throw for a touchdown this season after throwing two interceptions, making the passing game an area in need of improvement. With 2012 All-MIAC running back Jeffrey Dubose commanding attention in the ground game and an Ole defense that is allowing 148.7 rushing yards per game (6th/MIAC), look for throwing lanes to open up for quarterback Mitch Hendricks and the passing game to get going early against the Oles.

Tick Tock... The Gustie offense has shown significant improvement in controlling time of possession through the first two games. Gustavus lost the possession battle by 4:30 over the course of the 2012 season. This year, the Gusties have held on to the ball for 5:22 longer than their opponents, a swing of 9:52 in their favor from last season. This was evidenced in last Saturday’s contest, as the Gusties won the time of possession battle by controlling the clock for 33:25 of the game. Of Gustavus’s 11 drives on the day, four lasted longer than four minutes, two of which lasted 7:53 or more.

Run Stuffers... Allowing just 79 rushing yards per game this season, the Gustavus defense is the top-rated rushing defense in the MIAC. The Gusties have kept each of their first two opponents under the 100-yard rushing mark, holding Simpson to 63 yards and Augsburg to 95 yards. The Gustavus defense also held the MIAC’s third-leading rusher, Augsburg’s Ayrton Scott, to an average of just 2.7 yards per rush after gaining 57 yards on 21 carries. For the season, the Gusties are holding opponents to 2.3 yards per attempt.

The defensive back registered 10 tackles (8 solo) and made a key interception late in the third quarter that would lead to a 34-yard field goal, which would eventually prove to be the game-winning score.

2013 Gustavus Football Game Notes

SEPT. 22, 2012

GUSTAVUS 14ST. OLAF 17

Northfield, Minn. (6,219)Manitou Field51 degrees, Mostly Cloudy

Northfield, Minn. – Despite a gritty fourth quarter comeback, the Gustavus football team fell by the score of 17-14 to St. Olaf on Saturday afternoon at Manitou Field. After Gustavus cut lead to three points late in the fourth quarter, St. Olaf was able to hold on maintain posses-sion of the football until the final gun. Gustavus drops to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the MIAC with the loss, while St. Olaf improves to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC with the win. After forcing a turnover and a punt on St. Olaf’s first two possessions of the game, Gustavus failed to capitalize with the ball deep in St. Olaf territory. An interception by St. Olaf’s Jimmy Gildea at the 19-yard line shut down one drive, and three straight sacks by the Oles led to a turnover on downs on the next drive. St. Olaf capitalized on the ensuing possession when Dan Dobson went deep down the middle of the field to Stephen Asp for a 51-yard completion. Dobson took to the air on third-and-goal later in the drive, finding Jake Schmiesing on an out route from five yards out for the go-ahead touchdown (7-0). The Gustavus offense began to click at the start of the second quarter. Quarterback Muresuk Mena (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) broke free for a 21 and 27-yard run within the same drive to put Gustavus in the red-zone on the eight-yard-line. After running back Jeffrey Dubose (St. Paul, Minn.) took the ball down to the one-yard-line on a seven-yard carry, St. Olaf’s defense responded with a goal-line-stand that proved to be a major momentum shift in the game. The Oles stopped Gustavus on three-straight dives, preserving their 7-0 lead halfway through the second quarter. With a 7-0 edge following halftime, St. Olaf took advantage of another Gustavus miscue. After recovering a Mena fumble to Gustavus’ 26-yard-line, Dobson found Schmiesing once again – this time on a five-yard slant – for a touchdown to extend the lead to 14-0 with 11:08 left in the third quarter. Dobson finished the game 19-for-27 for 183 yards and two touchdowns passing. He found seven different receivers over the course of the day and rushed eight times for 50 yards. Stephen Asp was Dobson’s top target, bringing down three catches for a game-high 75 yards. After the Gustavus offense fumbled for the second-straight possession, the defense came up with big defensive stop on St. Olaf’s next drive when safety Jake Forcier (Watkins, Minn.) picked off Dobson at the Gustavus 27-yard-line. The Gusties used the momentum to cut the lead to 14-7 following an 11-play, 61-yard scoring drive. On third-and-goal from the four-yard-line, Mena was flushed out of the pocket after seeing that his key target was covered in the end zone. The senior eluded one tackle before scrambling free to the far sideline where he flanked the defense with speed and ran untouched across the goal line for the touchdown. Gustavus gashed the Oles with its running game on the drive, throwing only one incomplete pass and picking up all 71 yards on the ground. Just when it looked as if Gustavus had turned a corner in the game, St. Olaf responded with its most important drive of the afternoon. Although the Oles settled for a 24-yard Lucas Walnman field goal (17-7), the 14-play drive lasted 8:32. With 4:58 left to play in the game, Gustavus brought the score to a final at 17-14 after scoring a touchdown with less than three minutes on the clock. Once again, it was Muresuk Mena making a play with his feet. After seeing his hole collapse on a draw play on

fourth-and-one, Mena decided to reverse his field and look for a opening on the far side the field. With eight St. Olaf players in the box selling out on the inside run, Mena found daylight on the outside, hitting a lane with speed and galloping 58 yards for touchdown. The drive would be Gustavus’ last of the game, as the Oles picked up a pair of first downs on the final possession of the game. Although his squad threw for just 77 yards, Coach Haugen has confidence in his team’s running ability early in the season. “We have committed ourselves to keeping it simple and doing a few things exceptional in our rushing game. The guys who have the ball in their hands are dynamic; there is no question about that. With Muresuk near 200 yards and Jeffrey over 100, our ground game is right where it needs to be right now.” The senior quarterback turned in what was a historic day running the football. With 193 yards on 24 carries (8.0 ypc), Mena ranks 15th all-time on Gustavus’ single-game rushing list. He now holds the school record for most single-game rush-ing yards by a quarterback. With Dubose’ 114 yards on 18 carries (6.3 ypc), Gustavus ran for a total of 350 yards. Gustavus went 1-for-3 inside the red-zone, while St. Olaf capitalized on all three of its opportunities. The Black and Gold finished with 392 total yards compared to St. Olaf’ 323 yards.

Peter Haugen, a native of Minneapolis and a 1991 graduate of Bethel University, is entering his fifth year as head football coach at Gustavus Adolphus College.

In his fourth year as head coach, Haugen led the Gusties to a 3-7 record overall and a 2-6 mark within the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, finishing seventh in the league standings. In four-plus seasons at the head of the Gustavus Adolphus football program, Haugen has compiled an overall record of 14-28 and an MIAC record of 10-23. Last season, Gustavus received four all-conference selections in running back Jeffrey Dubose (St. Paul, Minn.), offensive lineman Brian Grundmeyer (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), defensive lineman Donte Green (Minneapolis, Minn.), and linebacker Joe Haas (Mission, Kan.). Dubose earned first team distinction while Grundmeyer, Green, and Haas all earned a spot on the second team.

Haugen, who was the head football coach at Washburn High School for 15 years prior to coming to Gustavus, compiled an overall record of 111-44 during that span, while winning 11 league championships and posting a league record of 76-8. He directed the Millers to the Class AAAA quarterfinals in 2007 finishing with a mark of 9-3. In his last season as the Millers head coach, Haugen’s squad posted a mark of 8-2. While building the program at Washburn, Haugen increased player participation from 35 players in 1994 to 110 players. He also implemented academic monitoring and meal programs for student athletes as well as creating and directing the highly successful Washburn Athletic Leadership Academy. He served as the chair of the Minneapolis Football Conference this past year and he is an active clinician working at many local and regional clinics including the NIKE Coach of the Year clinic. Haugen was also a member of the Metro coaching staff for the Minnesota All-Star game in 1998. He started his coaching career at his alma mater serving as the offensive line coach during the 1992 and 1993 seasons.

A three-sport standout at Bethel, Haugen was a starting tight end on the football team, a starting goaltender on the hockey team, and a starting catcher on the baseball team in the late ‘80s and early 90s. In his senior year, he earned All-Conference honors in football, and was selected Most Valuable Player of the hockey team.

Haugen became the 17th head coach in the 96-year history of Gustavus football. The Golden Gusties have a long and storied football tradition that includes 22 MIAC titles. The program ranks in the top-50 all-time in Division III (out of 235 institutions) with a .580 winning percentage (468-336-21). The Gusties will soon join a very elite group of 37 NCAA Division III institutions whose football teams have won 500 games. Along with great teams, Gustavus has also been blessed with many outstanding individual players, which includes 29 players who have received All-America honors, 12 who have received CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, and five who have received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Most recently in 2012, senior safety Brad Kruckeberg was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

Peter, and his wife, Brenda live in St. Peter with their three children, Zeke (15), Zoe (13), and Zetta (7).

2013 Gustavus Football Game Notes

Game 3 . September 28 . St. Olaf

In the end, however, the Gusties drained the final 2:29 with the final drive of the game to hold on for the 28-21 win.

“We came out and moved the ball the first few drives of the second half and rode the momentum,” added Dubose. “They came back at the end, but we just had to turn the page and get back on track. Sometimes you have lows during a game, but you have to stay steady. I think we did a good job of doing that.”

Gustavus was led offensively by Mitch Hendricks. In his first start as a Gustie, Hendricks completed 27-of-42 passes for 222 yards and also carried the ball nine times for 57 yards and two touchdowns. He was joined in the ground game by Jeffrey Dubose, who carried 22 times for 75 yards and two touchdowns. Phillip Butler (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) led all receivers with 11 catches for 53 yards.

Defensively, Joe Haas recorded seven tackles, while also forcing a fumble and recovering a fumble. Jake Forcier (Jr., Watkins, Minn.) registered five tackles and an interception on the day.

The Gusties will be back in action next Saturday when they travel to Minneapolis to take on Augsburg at 1:00 p.m. Even with the win, Head Coach Peter Haugen knows there is room for improvement heading into next week.

“I think we need to play cleaner,” stated Haugen. “Offensively in the first half, there were plays to be made and we were close to making them but just couldn’t seem to figure it out. We ended up doing that in the second half, but we need to play cleaner from the start.”

SIMPSON 21GUSTAVUS 28

St. Peter, Minn. (2,739)Hollingsworth Field77o, Sunny

St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus football team kicked off its 2013 season with a 28-21 victory over Simpson College Saturday afternoon at Hollingsworth Field. Trailing 7-0 late in the first half, the Gusties rattled off 28 unanswered points heading into the fourth quarter to take a 28-7 lead. Simpson did not go quietly, however, as the Storm scored twice in the final six minutes of the game to pull within seven. In the end, the Gusties drained the remaining 2:29 on the final drive of the afternoon to hang on for the 28-21 win. Gustavus begins the season 1-0, while Simpson drops to 1-1.

“It’s a great feeling to win a football game,” remarked linebacker Joe Haas (Sr., Mission, Kan.). “We have been working towards this since last season, and to come out here and play like we did, it feels amazing.”

After an empty outcome on its first possession, Simpson drove the ball 74 yards in seven plays and 2:44 to take an early 7-0 lead. A pair of big plays on the ground from Ethan Calvert and Tyler Kenny for gains of 17 yards and 23 yards, respectively, highlighted the drive, which was capped off by an eight-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Taylor Nelson to Ryan Olson.

On Simpson’s next possession, Joe Haas recovered a fumbled snap for the first of what would be four straight turnovers between the two teams. The Gusties returned the favor two plays later with a fumble inside the Simpson five-yard line only to get it right back on an athletic interception by Torey Asao (Sr., Chaska, Minn.). Three plays later it was Simpson’s turn to force an interception and the flurry of turnovers was finished.

Gustavus threatened on each of its next two possessions, but could not find a way to put points on the scoreboard until the final :26 seconds of the half. Following a pair of 20-plus-yard completions, Jeffrey Dubose (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) carried off right tackle for a two-yard touchdown run to even the score at 7-7 heading into halftime.

“I think we did a nice job of keeping our composure in the first half when we weren’t playing how we wanted to, especially on the offensive side of the ball,” mentioned Dubose. “We stuck with it and took the momentum when we scored at the end of the half.”

The 15-minute halftime break could do nothing to break the spirit of the newly rejuvenated Gusties. They proceeded to score on each of their first three possessions of the second half to open up a 28-7 lead midway through the third. On its opening drive following the break, Gustavus marched 69 yards down the field in 11 plays to score the half’s opening touchdown on an 11-yard run by Jeffrey Dubose. On the play, Dubose surpassed the 2,000-yard rushing milestone, becoming just the 11th player to do so in the history of the Gustavus football program.

“It means a lot to me,” admitted Dubose of his accomplishment. “A big reason why I have gotten this far is because of the coaches and my teammates. The coaches have kept their faith in me and my teammates have been willing to block for me. From the offensive line out to the receivers, it has really been a team thing. They put the yards in front of me and I just had to grab them.”

The Gusties needed just two plays on the following drive, thanks to a 53-yard touchdown run by quarterback Mitch Hendricks (So., Laporte, Minn.) that extended the Gustavus lead to 21-7. After Xavier Fust (Jr., Columbia Heights, Minn.) recovered a fumble inside the Simpson nine-yard line, Hendricks scored his second touchdown of the day with a four-yard touchdown run.

However, Simpson would not go quietly. In a 28-7 hole, Simpson came back to score two touchdowns in the final six minutes of the game to pull within seven points. The Storm scored on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Nelson to Mike Kuhn to narrow the lead to 28-14 before Taylor fired another touchdown pass to Nate Connealy.

“Simpson has a great offense, we learned that last year, and they showed it today when they scored two touchdowns in two minutes,” said Haas. “We held together as a defense and got the turnover we needed to make a stand on the goal line.”

“We went into the game thinking we had to contain their quarterback and run the ball well. We did both of those today,” commented Head Coach Peter Haugen. “I thought we did a great job of limiting what their quarterback was able to do on the ground. We wanted to make him beat us with his arm, and Augsburg was able to make enough plays in the passing game to do that.”

For the game, Gustavus running back Jeffrey Dubose carried 37 times for a career-high 227 yards. His performance ties the Gustavus record for most carries in a game, while his 227 rushing yards rank seventh on the all-time single-game rushing yards list, 31 yards behind the record of 258 yards set by Ray Wilson `09 against Augsburg in 2008.

Through the air, Gustavus quarterback Mitch Hendricks (So., Laporte, Minn.) completed 12 of 23 passes for 100 yards and was sacked twice on the day. Gustavus’ leading receiver was Phillip Butler (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) for the second week in a row. Butler hauled in four receptions for 34 yards.

“We have to score more points,” Haugen put simply. “Jeffrey did a great job running the ball today and our guys up front were terrific, but we weren’t as effective in our passing game as we needed to be. Augsburg did a good job punting the football, so we played on a long field for a good part of the day, but we just weren’t as sharp as we needed to be.”

Defensively, Cameron Cropsey (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) led the way for the Gusties. Cropsey registered eight total tackles (4 solo) and intercepted a pass on the day. Travis Pepper (Jr., Overland Park, Kan.) came next with 7 tackles (2 solo), while Beau Bachman recorded the lone sack on the day.

Quarterback Ayrton Scott led the way for the Auggies offensively. Scott accounted for 258 yards through the air and 56 more on the ground. He also tallied three passing touchdowns on the day, two of which connected with Joey Sonnenfeld, who caught a total of four passes for 66 yards. Phil Putratz led all receivers in the game with five catches for 104 yards and a touchdown.

Michael Juberian led the Augsburg defense in the game. Juberian registered 18 tackles (5 solo) on the day. Felix Coleman joined him with double-digit tackles, notching 10 total (6 solo) on the afternoon.

The two teams were nearly identical in most offensive categories. Gustavus claimed 21 first downs compared to Augsburg’s 19, while the Auggies outgained the Gusties in total yardage by a single yard. Augsburg gained 353 yards on 68 offensive plays in comparison to 352 yards on 71 plays for Gustavus. However, the key difference proved to be Gustavus’ two turnovers, one of which came on its final drive of the game, compared to just one for Augsburg.

GUSTAVUS 16AUGSUBRG 19

Minneapolis (1,409)Edor Nelson Field55o, Mostly Cloudy

Minneapolis – After leading on the scoreboard for nearly 44 consecutive minutes of game clock on Saturday, the Gustavus football team surrendered its lead to Augsburg late in the fourth quarter and would not get it back as it fell to the Auggies by a final score of 19-16 at Edor Nelson Field. Augsburg’s game-winning drive required four plays to march 78 yards in :51 seconds to score the go-ahead touchdown with just 2:37 remaining. With the loss, Gustavus drops to 1-1 overall and begins Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play 0-1. Augsburg improves to 2-0 and opens its MIAC schedule 1-0.

After receiving the opening kickoff, the Gustavus offense proceeded to control the remainder of the first quarter. The Gusties dominated the time of possession battle, controlling the ball for 11:03 of the opening 15 minutes. Following an interception on its first drive, Gustavus took over at the 12:30 mark and would not give the ball up until there was just 3:47 remaining in the quarter, rattling off a 16-play, 58-yard drive that began at its own 10-yard line. However, the Gusties came up empty-handed when they failed to convert on fourth down in Augsburg territory. Because of the dominance in possession, the Gustie defense was able to hold the Augsburg offense to just 29 total yards in the opening quarter compared to 104 yards for Gustavus.

The Gustavus offense chewed up another 3:30 to begin the second quarter before Jeffrey Dubose (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) got the Gusties on the scoreboard with a two-yard touchdown run. The touchdown capped a nine-play, 91-yard drive that was highlighted by a 45-yard carry from Dubose on the first play of the second frame. The senior’s two-yard score was his third touchdown of the season and gave the Gusties a 7-0 lead following a Tom Schleusener (Jr., Rapid City, S.D.) extra point.

Augsburg answered with a touchdown of its own on the ensuing possession. A 45-yard kickoff return to the Gustavus 49-yard line by Tyrell Martin set up what would be a 12-play, 49-yard drive that was capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass from Auggie quarterback Ayrton Scott, who accounted for all 49 yards on the drive (27 pass, 22 rush), to Joey Sonnenfeld. With the Gusties now leading 7-6, a rare turn of events ensued on the point-after attempt. The extra point try was blocked by Torey Asao (Sr., Chaska, Minn.) and returned all the way to the endzone by Beau Bachman (Sr., St. Peter, Minn.) to give Gustavus two points on what should have been the game-tying extra point. As it stood, the Gusties took a 9-6 lead to halftime, as neither team was able to put any more points on the board before the break.

After forcing a three-and-out on the Augsburg’s first possession of the second half, Gustavus came out to score on its opening drive of the third quarter. Beginning on their own 32-yard line, the Gusties drove 68 yards in nine plays to take a 16-6 lead. Carrying the workload throughout the day, Jeffrey Dubose carried the ball seven times for 48 yards on the drive, 12 of them coming on his second touchdown run of the afternoon.

Just as in the first half, Augsburg again had the answer in the third quarter. The Auggies marched 75 yards in nine plays, highlighted by a 45-yard completion from Ayrton Scott to Phil Putratz that would have spotted the ball inside the Gustavus five-yard line were it not for a personal foul penalty assessed to Augsburg. The Auggies were not to be denied, however, and put the ball in the endzone on the second scoring connection between Scott and Joey Sonnenfeld, this time from 10 yards out.

Augsburg threatened again late in the third and into the fourth on a 15-play, 50-yard drive that stretched over 4:54 of game clock, but the drive stalled at the Gustavus 13-yard line when the Auggies failed to convert on fourth down.

Gustavus could not pass midfield on either of its next two drives, as the Augsburg punting unit pinned the Gusties deep in their own territory in both situations. After eating up 7:53 on its second drive of the quarter, Gustavus was forced to punt on fourth down and 16 yards to go.

Cameron Cropsey led the way for the Gustavus defense with eight tackles and an interception. Cameron Cropsey led the way for the Gustavus defense with eight tackles and an interception.

Augsburg took over on its own 22-yard line and four plays later owned a 19-16 lead. A 21-yard completion to Sonnenfeld, a 12-yard run by Scott set the Auggies up for a 46-yard touchdown on a screen pass to Phil Putratz to give Augsburg its first lead of the game with 2:37 to play. The Gusties began what would be their final possession at their own 41-yard line, but a key fumble on the first play of the drive put the seal on the outcome as the Auggies were able to milk the remaining 2:24 and wrap up the 19-16 victory.
