EVANGELIZATION Jesus, in the Father’s plan, has given the task of telling the good-

ness of the Lord (the Good News

of salvation) to the Church. It is,

in fact, the Church’s number one

mandate from the Lord. And this

mission is for all the baptized,

not just for bishops or priests or

deacons to tell. A true soldier

cannot keep to self what fellow

soldiers need to survive.

DISCIPLESHIP I am not only called to be a disci-

ple (student) but also an apostle

(sent) as well.

I not only need to receive Christ

but to bring Him to others.

I am not only to be concerned

with my own salvation but that

of others as well.

MARKS OF TRUE PARISH LIFE Each member of the parish would know God as Father, Jesus

as Saviour and live in the power of the Holy Spirit using the

charisms.

Each member would have a personal prayer life, read the

Scriptures, receive the Sacraments and belong to a fellowship

group.

Each would be involved in some form of service, works of

mercy, paying tithes, fasting and evangelization.

AGONY Alone on that dark night, among the olive trees in the garden of

Gethsemane, the Lord Jesus became fearful and disturbed. He

could have fled, as his disciples would soon flee. But he stayed,

kneeling on the ground, praying to his Father that the cup of suf-

fering pass him by, yet trusting he could drink it if it be God’s will.

Lord may we stand by you even when times are challenging.

TRANSFIGURATION On the way to Jerusalem where he would be crucified, Jesus told

his disciples of his coming sufferings and death. They were deeply

saddened. To raise their spirits, Jesus took them up a mountain and

he was transfigured (glorified) before them to show that God’s

glory endures, even in life saddest moments.

FASTING “Prayer is reaching out after the unseen; fasting is letting go of all

that is seen and temporal. Fasting helps express, deepen, confirm

the resolution that we are ready to sacrifice anything, even our-

selves to attain what we seek for the kingdom of God” (Andrew

Murray)

CHARITY “He who is kind to the poor (in spirit and in fact) lends to the Lord,

and he will reward him for what he has done (Proverbs 19:17)

CORPORAL WORKS OF CHARITY Feed the hungry

Give drink to the thirsty

Clothe the naked

Harbour the harbourless

Visit the sick

Ransom the captive

Bury the dead

St. Thomas Aquinas said that

although mercy is as it were the

spontaneous product of charity,

yet it is to be reckoned a special

VIRTUE adequately distinguish-

able from the latter.

SPIRITUAL WORKS OF

CHARITY To instruct the ignorant

To counsel the doubtful

To admonish sinners

To bear wrongs patiently

To forgive offences willingly

To comfort the afflicted

To pray for the living and

the dead

St. Thomas Aquinas said that

the Works of Mercy practically

coincide with various forms of almsgiving. We are not only to care

about the physical well being of others, but also their spiritual well

being as well.

THE PRAYER OF ST. FRANCIS Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled

as to console;

to be understood as to understand;

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

ALWAYS SAY A PRAYER There is work to do, deadlines to meet, you’ve got no time to

spare, but as you hurry and scurry, always say a prayer.

In the midst of family chaos, “quality time” is rare. Do your

best, let God do the rest; always say a prayer.

It may seem like your worries are more than you can bear, eve-

rything falls out of place. Slow down and take a breath always

say a prayer.

God knows how stressful life is; He wants to ease our cares;

and He will respond ASAP;

Always say a prayer.

THE THINGS THEY SAY “A lot of kneeling will keep you in good standing.”

SACRAMENT OF PENANCE – WALK-IN CLINIC The Scriptures ask that we be reconciled with God and our

neighbor. There’s no better time to do this than

Lent. Join in our Diocesan Day of Reconciliation

on Saturday March 5, 2016, from 10:00am and

2:00pm. There will be Eucharistic Adoration dur-

ing this time. Just walk into our Parish of St. Pat-

rick or any other parish in the diocese, for that

matter, and there will be awaiting you a priest

ready to celebrate with you the Sacrament of Confession welcoming

you into our heavenly Fathers embrace. No matter how long it has

been or the reason, don’t let anything keep you away from the beauty

of reconciliation and healing the Lord offers. It’s totally freely given.

“Sacraments are powers that come forth from the body of Christ

which is ever-living and life-giving” (Catechism of the Catholic

Church).

RESPECT FOR LIFE MASS There is a Respect for Life Mass on April 4 at 7pm at the Cathedral of

St. Catherine of Alexandria in St. Catharines. This Mass, celebrated

by Bishop Bergie, is a special Diocesan Mass to thank God for the

gift of life, to pray for human life in all its stages and to pray for those

wounded by abortion. A Reception will follow in the parish hall

hosted by the Diocesan CWL. For more information please contact

Elise 905-684-7569 or Martina 289-686-6122.

MAN OF THE SHROUD EXHIBIT St. Alfred Church will be hosting the Man of the Shroud Exhibit

during Lent (March 2-8, 2016). The Exhibit illustrates

the history, significance and scientific aspects of the

original Shroud of Turin. There will be a full-size rep-

lica of the Shroud of Turin as well as reconstructed arti-

facts of the Crucifixion. In addition, there are lectures

offered by prominent Shroud scholars. For further in-

formation and schedules see the posters on the church

bulletin boards or og to www.stalfredcatholicchurch.ca.

GOOD FRIDAY WALK Once again First Presbyterian Church is organizing a short Good

Friday Walk. We will leave the parking lot of First Presbyterian

Church on Friday, March 25th at 9:15am. We will be slowly walking

or marching to a drummer and taking turns carrying the cross. The

walk is silent and solemn and in memory of Jesus Christ dying on the

cross for our sins.

Our route will go south from our parking lot to Victoria St. We

will turn left and go east onto Victoria St. to King St. We will turn

left again going north onto King St. and pass St. Patrick's Catholic

Church. At the corner of King and Charlotte, in from of St. James

and St. Brendan’s church, we will turn west and continue down Char-

lotte until we reach the First Presbyterian Church.

All churches and individuals are cordially invited to join us in the

spirit of Lent. Anyone may join us as we start at 9:15am in the church

parking lot, or as has been suggested, those from St. Patrick’s Church

may join the group as we pass by their church and also those from the

Anglican Church may join as we pass their sanctuary also. People

will continue on around a large block until they return to their starting

place.

We estimate the walk may take about 45 minutes. The walk will

take place in rain or shine, warm or cold. Please wear appropriate

clothing and bring an umbrella if needed. For more information call

Peggy White at 905-834-8721 or [email protected].
