St. Patrick, Kankakee ~ a Viatorian Parish PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 20, 2018

Ordinary People ~ Pentecost People

Lord, life is a mystery, far too deep for us to fathom … far too large for us to grasp.

We are just ordinary people seeking to make each day something special

and hoping that in some way our lives might have meaning, might count.

And so we recognize that we need so much.

We need wisdom and strength. We need compassion and courage.

And we turn to you as the source of what we need.

What a surprise it is to discover that you are within us!

In Jesus, you have stepped into our world.

By your Spirit, you have stepped into our hearts.

How often we have missed this hidden treasure inside us.

Yes, we are just ordinary people,

but we are in your image, and we are filled with your Presence.

Forgive us for our blindness and for our neglect of the gifts

with which you have so generously blessed us.

We pray all this through Christ our Lord. Amen. John van de Laar

ST. PATRICK CHURCH, 428 SOUTH INDIANA AVENUE, KANKAKEE, IL 60901

Let us ask ourselves:

Why do you and I not act

as someone who has God within us?

Well, like anything planted so deep,

the Spirit's presence must have time to make its way

into our actions, our words, our deeds.

Whenever we find patches of charity or joy in ourselves,

or patience and kindness,

or the ability to endure hardships and injuries,

whenever we are drawn toward mildness and modesty,

then we can surely know that the Holy Spirit is at work.

No, it is not heavy winds and tongues of fire, as in former days.

But it is the same Spirit of Jesus and of the Father

that has been bestowed throughout history.

Can we open our minds and hearts to it? John Foley, SJ

For Reflection … “To each individual the manifestation of the

Spirit is given for some benefit.” ⬧ Were Vivaldi

and Michelangelo given gifts solely for their

own pleasure? ⬧ For whose benefit were they

given? ⬧ What are your gifts and for what benefit

are they given to you and those around you? ⬧

Are you confident that the Spirit is with you? ⬧

How important is the Holy Spirit to you?

Please Pray for These Men and Women

Serving in the Military …

Synthia Dorsey, Dustin Foltz, Kelton Gifford,

David Hodak, Nathan Hornback,

Joseph Jordan, Henry Kijewski,

Matthew Lanasa, Troy Martin, Sarah Miller,

Keith Mulholland, Justin Phelps, John T. Raimondo, Scott Riegel,

Daniel Ryan, Andrew Ryan,

Erik Schultz, Gregory Smith, Jessica Smith,

Michael Widhalm, and Brandi Zinnel.

Be with them, Lord, and keep them safe!

PLEASE REMEMBER

THE FOOD PANTRY!

Are we open to God’s surprises?

Or are we closed and fearful

before the newness of the Holy Spirit?

Do we have the courage

to strike out along the new paths

which God sets before us,

or do we resist,

barricaded in transient structures

which have lost their capacity

for openness to what is new?

Pope Francis

A Stewardship Moment … Today we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit, the birth of the Church

and the beginning of its mission in the world. Pentecost Sunday reminds us that our lives are

filled with the Holy Spirit and that God has accomplished creative things in us through this gift.

We have been entrusted with this great gift of the Holy Spirit. Envelope Number 384. Now is a

good time to ask: Are we being good stewards of this gift? What creative things have we done

to glorify God’s accomplishments in us?

MANDALA MEDITATION at One Heart, One Soul

Many civilizations have used mandalas as a focus in meditation and mandala

coloring books have become popular in our own culture. Another form of mandala

meditation is to make a mandala of your own. Through painting and drawing

mandalas, we allow our right brain creative selves to come out. Often the process leads to

constructive healing and insight into our lives. So, come away for a Time of Prayer with

Presenter Alice Sparks, on Thursday, June 7, from 9 a.m. - 12:00 noon. We will gather at the

One Heart, One Soul Spirituality Center’s lower level at 2041 W. State Route 113, Kankakee.

Sponsored by the Servants of the Holy Heart of Mary. A Free Will Offering will be accepted.

To Register or For More Information, please call (815) 935-0800 or just stop by.

On behalf of the faculty, staff, students, alumni, and families of Bishop McNamara Catholic

School, we THANK YOU for your support of our 34th Annual Dinner Auction. Your

generosity positively impacts our students each and every day. When you give to Bishop

McNamara, it has an enormous impact on our ability to enhance our standards of excellence.

This year's paddle raise helped fund STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)

enhancement initiatives for Bishop McNamara students of all ages. STEM offers a cohesive

learning environment based on real-world applications.

We sincerely appreciate your support!

The Annual CCW Banquet was held Tuesday at THE

DEPOT in downtown Kankakee, with the delicious

meal catered by The Longbranch of L’Erable. Margie

Suprenant and Karleen Yohnka co-chaired the event.

Tables were decorated with antique teapots filled with

spring flowers. Woman of the Year Loretto Cowhig

was honored for her parish and civic involvement. In a

light moment, last year’s Woman of the Year, JoAnne

Schwade passed on the tiara! Father Peeters drew the

names of those “Bake-less Food Sale” supporters who

each won a Baker’s Square pie certificate. The winners

were: Thomas Marcotte, Patrick McNeely, Mulholland

Family, Andrea Steinke, Judy Surprenant, and James

Truelove. Father Peeters was presented with a check

from the CCW to use for special projects.

Thank You to everyone who worked to provide such a lovely evening!

here is much emphasis on notoriety and

fame in our society. Our newspapers

and television keep giving us the

message: What counts is to be known, praised,

and admired, whether you are a writer, an

actor, a musician, or a politician. Still, real

greatness is often hidden, humble, simple, and

unobtrusive. It is not easy to trust ourselves

and our actions without public affirmation. We

must have strong self-confidence combined

with deep humility. Some of the greatest

works of art and the most important works of

peace were created by people who had no need

for the limelight. They knew that what they

were doing was their call from God, and they

did it with great patience, perseverance,

and love. Henri Nouwen
