Act of Spiritual Communion

The Church encourages frequent, even daily, Holy Communion, but if at any time we cannot go to Mass in or out of this season of the coronavirus, we can still unite ourselves to the Eucharist through making a spiritual Communion. By making an Act of Spiritual Communion, we express our faith in Christ’s Real Presence in the Eucharist and ask him to unite himself with us. Here is the Act of Spiritual Communion written by St. Alphonsus de Liguori:

My Jesus,

I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

Catholic Home Missions Appeal Strengthening the Church at Home

Next week, we will take up the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. Today, over 40 % of dioceses in the United States are considered mission territories because they are unable to fund the essential pastoral work their communities need. Your support of this appeal helps ease the struggle of these dioceses. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this appeal. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/home-missions.

The Hour of Great Mercy

In His revelations to St. Faustina, Our Lord asked for a special prayer and meditation on His Passion each afternoon at the three o’clock hour, the hour that recalls His death on the cross. At three o’clock, implore My mercy, especially for sinners; and, if only for a brief moment, immerse yourself in My Passion, particularly in My abandonment at the moment of agony. This is the hour of great mercy. In this hour, I will refuse nothing to the soul that makes a request of Me in virtue of My Passion (Diary, 1320). As often as you hear the clock strike the third hour, immerse yourself completely in My mercy, adoring and glorifying it; invoke its omnipotence for the whole world, and particularly for poor sinners; for at that moment mercy was opened wide for every soul. In this hour you can obtain everything for yourself and for others for the asking; it was the hour of grace for the whole world — mercy triumphed over justice. (1572) — thedivinemercy.org

Dear St. Patrick’s Parishioners, You really are amazing. We were very concerned over missing the Fifth Sunday collection for St. Vincent de Paul because of Mass being celebrated only online. We were wonderfully surprised, though, to see how many of you brought envelopes to the rectory, and we were able to deposit a good amount of money into our account.

As you can well imagine, we are beginning to be overwhelmed with the numbers of recent requests for help from many very frightened people. Many of those we work with have lost their job due to the need to shelter in place. A singular characteristic of many people we help is that they are alone; they do not have other people they can rely on.

The new ordinance banning evictions for 90 days and grants procured by the San Rafael office to pay some April rents have provided some relief and enabled the conferences to pay the other bills now made impossible for so many who have been laid off. Each day we see requests for assistance with rent and other necessities growing in number and amount. (God bless the person in charge of our phone during this time.)

Food has become a real problem. Of the 272 food banks in Marin, 100 had to close because of safety concerns. Some of our clients rely completely on them for all of their food. And so, we’ve been both shopping for food and delivering Safeway and Lucky cards to our clients.

As you know, one of the distinguishing marks of our SVdeP work is that, going in pairs, we visit the clients in their homes. Since we cannot do that now, many hours are being spent on the phone, not only determining need but also bringing reassurance to people whose lives are completely turned around.

The mission of SVdeP is to grow in spirituality, friendship, and service. This week, we added one more quality: technology. Moving very quickly into the 21st Century, we met for the first time by Zoom. That meeting lasted three hours because of the greatly increased case load.

And so, the work continues, and there is a real sense of being cared for. You are the “life boats” God is sending, and we are climbing in. Thank you very much for your wonderful help. May you and your family be filled with the blessings of this Easter season.

Sincerely,

Your St. Patrick’s Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society

“ Why are you afraid? Have you no faith”? Faith begins when we realize we are in need of salvation. We are not self-sufficient; by ourselves we founder: we need the Lord, like

ancient navigators needed the stars. Let us invite Jesus into the boats of our lives. Let us hand over our fears to him so that he can conquer them. Like the disciples, we will experience that with him on board there will be no shipwreck. Because this is God’s strength: turning to the good everything that happens to us, even the bad things. He brings serenity into our storms, because with God life never dies. — Pope Francis, Moment of Prayer, 27 March 2020

Offering a Mass for a dearly departed one or for a special intention for a friend or family member is a wonderful gift.

Masses can bring comfort for those physically or emotionally ill and in need of healing and prayers. Masses are also a thoughtful gift to celebrate a birthday or special milestone.

You are welcome to stop by the rectory office between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and we will be most happy to assist you with your request.

HE IS RISEN! ALLELUIA! ALLELUIA! This year, celebrating Easter, the highlight of our liturgical year and crux of our faith, was certainly a unique experience. I could never have imagined in all my years of priesthood celebrating the Sacred Triduum and Easter Sunday Mass in an empty church. Moreover, I never imagined having to celebrate Mass in an empty church for literally weeks on end, with no end in sight. As disconcerting as this is, I do feel connected to each of you, my dear parishioners, through the gift of the Holy Spirit which we share.

It has been nearly six weeks since we have been able to gather as a faith community for holy Mass and it appears it will be at least another six to eight weeks before we can even begin to consider gathering in our parish church to celebrate the holy Mass! With that said, there has been a dramatic decrease in our parish income, amounting to close to 80%! I do want to sincerely thank the few parishioners who have remembered the parish during these strange times. Several of you continue to mail in your weekly donation or drop them off at the parish office. Some of you have signed up on our parish website for electronic giving which is the best and surest way for your donation to reach the parish each week. Please know that I am extremely grateful for your remembrance.

For those who have not had the opportunity to remember your parish during these times, I ask you to please consider doing so. The simplest and best way to do this is by going to our parish website and registering for automatic weekly giving. Simply click on the following link (www.stpatricksparish.com) and look for the GIVING button on our webpage. It is a quick and easy process.

Thank you for considering this request and for sacrificing by making a generous donation to help your church continue its mission. As Saint John Paul II once said: “Be not afraid.” We must never be afraid to trust in our God who promises to be with his holy church until the end of time. Belief in this is one of the things we celebrate at this holy time of year. Be well, healthy and happy and be reassured that you are in my fond thoughts and daily prayers and I ask for yours.

Sincerely yours in Christ, Monsignor Michael Padazinski
