Likewise, with his empty fishing nets dramatically filled at Jesus’ instruction, Peter fell to his knees and cried out, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” Next, Peter got up. He docked his boats then left to follow Jesus. Isaiah also had a dramatic change of heart. When he heard the Lord say, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” Isaiah answered, “Here I am, send me.” We are summoned daily by the Risen Lord. We are reminded of the saving power of the gospel and know in our heart of hearts that, as St. Paul wrote, believing in anything else won’t lead to anything. What will it take for you to move past your sinfulness? What will it take for you to get off your knees? What will it take for you to bring to dock what is unimportant and to accept your call to be God’s messenger? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

MARRIAGE PREPARATION It is necessary to contact a priest 6 months before intended date of marriage. Pre-marriage preparation is also required for the Sacrament of Marriage.

GOD’S SUMMONS Confronted with God’s power and majesty, the first response of the prophet Isaiah was to acknowledge his sinful-ness. “Woe is me, I am doomed! Likewise, with his empty fishing nets dramatically filled at Jesus’ instruction, Peter fell to his knees and cried out, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.”

THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE SIX

“RESILIENCE”

Dr. Anthony F. Merante

There are many similar definitions for resilience. Some are more detailed than others. But basically, I like to define resilience as the ability to cope with adversity. Resilience is also the ability to “bounce back” from such adversity. Now, I am not going to talk about any major catastrophe, tragedy, or severe trauma. That is beyond the scope of this message. Such situations in life are difficult for all of us.

Actually, my focus is going to be on the opposite. It is the small things in life, which provide opportunities for children to build up their resilience. Parents need to help their children develop the skills to become resilient in every day life, not try to rescue them every time something happens that they don’t like. When some children become teenagers and adults, they often cannot deal with what they face because they were not given enough of these opportunities when they were growing up. Their parents were overprotective by not letting them take minor risks, calling the neighbor or school every time something happened that they didn’t like, or ran around the house making sure their son or daughter wouldn’t get upset.

Okay, think back to when you were in elementary school. Do you remember Christmas – your birthday – a summer vacation? Did you always get what you wanted…did you go where you wanted if you went any-where? Can’t remember? Not sure? Like most of us, for some of those times you didn’t get everything you wanted for Christmas, everything you wanted for your birthday, or went where you wanted for vacation. Have you survived? Yes, and though you may not remember specifics, when this took place, a little bit of you learned to cope. There are of course many other examples.

Do you remember when you were young and had a terrible cold and couldn’t go out and play? Do you remem-ber when you weren’t invited to that birthday party? It wasn’t fun and you weren’t happy, but I think you han-dled it and it didn’t damage you, though at that time it was very disappointing. You see, everything our chil-dren go through (again discounting tragedies as I mentioned above) really isn’t going to negatively change their life that much at that time. When things like this do happen, they need to learn to cope. They can’t cope if you don’t let your children experience these small natural consequences in life.

When parents try to FIX EVERYTHING so their children aren’t sad, so their children don’t have to deal with disap-pointment, or so the parents themselves don’t have to feel the pain of watching their children being upset, they are doing their children a disservice. It isn’t easy being a parent. It is painful at times and no one enjoys pain! But we have to remember that as our children go through life, they are going to have many disappointments. Our task is to help them cope with the disappointments when they are young…by talking with them, explaining to them that this is part of life, and yes, giving them that phrase we all use, life isn’t fair. If we do this now, we better prepare them as they get older. No, parenting isn’t easy, but no one said it was supposed to be!

REMEMBER, AT ST. PATRICK SCHOOL, WE EDUCATE THE WHOLE CHILD!
