Pikes Peak Detachment January 2020 Newsletter 2

Commandant Steve Schwartz Welcome to a new year and new decade. As a Detachment, we have much to accomplish this coming year and I am calling on everyone to jump in and do your part to keep us moving forward. While the next couple of months will bring some quiet time, we need to begin planning for the many parades and community events that will begin shortly. Last month I said that we have several decisions to make regarding not just this year but for future years as well. Do we want to compete for a National Convention? Do we have enough members willing and able to jump aboard the Officer train in November? Can we do what we have done in the past better and more efficiently? The answer to these and many more questions will be determined by the determination of the Detachment to succeed and continue being the best we can be. I have been impressed this past year with the quality of our members and I believe wholeheartedly that we will continue to move forward. I would like to see us grow as a family while sustaining the obligations of the Marine Corps League. Again, it's up to all of use to make that happen. New members must be recruited, newer members must be made to feel a part of the Detachment and always feel welcome. All members must be cultivated and encouraged to take active roles in whatever they feel comfortable doing. Just as we did when we were on Active Duty, we need to depend on each other and have each other's backs. I know that is what all of you want, too. So welcome 2020. I'm looking forward to a great year. Reminder: at our January meeting we will have a presentation of the Honor Bell. Please try to be present for what I think will be an inspiring part of our meeting. Don't forget the WWII Luncheon on the 14th and I'm looking forward to our meeting on the 18th. Semper Fi Marines!! Semper Fi, Steve

Pikes Peak Detachment January 2020 Newsletter 3

Senior Vice Commandant Terry Crum Greetings motivated Marines, dedicated FMF Corpsmen, and outstanding associate members. Welcome to 2020. The year is still very young and the opportunities to serve are many. This newsletter you are reading details many of these chances to get involved. Below this article you will note a table listing the many Detachment members, regular and associates, that volunteered their time and energies to performed the duties of Detachment elected and appointed officers. Perhaps your name will be added to the list in the future. Volunteers will be needed for the 2020 Scholarship committee, please consider being part of this important committee. A minimum of three voting members are required, more are welcome. The amount of time needed on your part will be kept to a minimum. Required is reviewing applications and essays with a vote at the end. I will be discussing this topic at the January Detachment meeting. The Pikes Peak Detachment has had many good years in large part the friendly and positive attitude of the membership. The positive attitude of the Detachment membership is contagious. Respecting the dignity of all of our Detachment members will ensure the good we are doing continues. All of our regular members are honorably discharged Marines, no “Maggots” here. Most of our associate members are spouses of Marines. A difficult job to do in so many cases. Lastly, please remember our members that are sick and distressed. Often we are made aware of their plight and at other times they choose to keep the information to themselves. Regardless their struggle is real and important to us. Take care, God bless, and pray for our troops in harm’s way in Iraq and the Persian Gulf. Semper Fidelis, Terry

Pikes Peak Detachment January 2020 Newsletter 6

Toys for Tots Coordinator Russ Miller

Another successful Toys for Tots Campaign is complete. Thank you to all of the detachment members, friends, and family that came out and contributed so many hours volunteering at the warehouse, delivering boxes, collecting toys, manning toy drive events, sorting and delivering toys to recipients in the four counties that we served in. I wish to give another huge thank you to Roger and Terry Baty for the refurbishing of our old Toys for Tots train that was looking pretty haggard. Marine Baty also built a new train that we took down to the new Toys for Tots coordinator in Alamosa for use in their Christmas Parade and at the Cumbres & Toltec Railway’s 4th Annual Santa Train. By having the second train in the valley, it allowed us more opportunities to use “Old No. 1” here in the Pikes Peak area.

In 2018 we delivered toys to 18,143 children in nine counties. In 2019, we relinquished the four counties in the San

Luis Valley (Alamosa) to a new coordinator, Rowena Martinez (wife of MCL PPD member, Marine Chris Martinez), that has been helping us these past few years. She has done a fantastic job of taking charge and moving the mission forward to new heights in their area of responsibility. You would think that our numbers would have gone down from 2018 to 2019 with the transfer of these counties and one county no longer participating in the program. However, for the 2019 campaign we were able to distribute toys to 20,411 less fortunate children through 62 agencies, schools, churches and non-profit organizations. Part of the reason for the continued growth is the founding of the “Stop Competing – Start Completing” initiative. We were able to strengthen our relationship with Christmas Unlimited and supplement their toy needs when they saw their numbers for Individual Family toy give-aways rise from 3,000 children in 2018 to over 8,000 children this campaign. We also had a very fruitful new partnering with all of the local law enforcement agencies. From Monument down to Fountain, we were able to help them free up officers and resources from collecting and storing toys and concentrate more on distribution of toys to families hit by hardship. Thank you to Richard Hamilton of 7 Eleven for facilitating these new and hopefully continuing partnerships.

Lastly, in addition to the charity football games that Marine “Bear” Barrera (aka Coach Bear) and his players played

to bring awareness to our efforts and raise money, toys and food for less fortunate families all over Colorado. I was also deeply honored to go with Bear, some of his players as well as the coach and a few players from the Colorado Springs Flames to deliver toys and some very special stuffed bears to patients and staff at the new Children’s Hospital at Memorial North. Thank you “Team Bear” for all you continue to do for less fortunate children.

“Every Child deserves a little Christmas!” Semper Fi and Happy New Year!!! Russ Miller

MCL membership cards news update. “We used to print the cards on a dot-matrix printer, in-house and on paper. This year we decided to move to a plastic card instead of paper as the paper one can easily get destroyed. We have a list of thousands of names that are at a company that is to print the membership cards, stick them to a letter, and mail them to our members. They are having an issue getting it to work. Once they get it squared away, the new cards will be sent and the new process will be better than the old one. I cannot provide a timeline.” Regards, COO Borka
