THE BREAD OF LIFE

Today’s Gospel has the crowd asking Jesus three questions.

First, “When did you get here,” to which Jesus responds by

rebuking them for their failure to grasp his miracle as a “sign,” an

occasion to put faith in him. Their second question about

accomplishing the “works of God” has Jesus respond that faith is

the “work” that God wishes. Many scholars believe this is John’s

answer to the faith-works dichotomy emerging in the early

Christian community. Faith is the work of God in the believer, John

would have us understand. The third question asked by the crowd is

a request for a “sign” that would allow them to put faith in Jesus, as

the manna in the desert allowed the Israelites to put faith in the

Lord God. Jesus answers by revealing himself as the “bread of life”

that “comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Weekend of August 4/5 In today’s Gospel we hear Jesus proclaiming that he is “the bread

of life.” He then offers an invitation to come to him. For us, the

invitation is to live the Eucharistic life in Christ. What does it

mean for our parish family to live together in the Eucharist? What

does it mean for us to share the Eucharist together, to participate in

the “bread of life” together? Does it mean we love each other,

support our community of faith, work together? Do we carry each

other’s burdens? Celebrate our joys? What are the practical

implications of being good stewards of our Eucharistic life

together?

This week we would like help with

the following items:

Peanut Butter, Canned Beans

& Ramen Noodles

Thank you for your generosity.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

The Faith Formation Program is in need of

volunteers for the upcoming year. If you feel called to

share your faith with the young people of the parish,

please consider joining the program. Please be advised

that the Diocese of Monterey requires that all volunteers

be fingerprinted before being allowed to volunteer. If

you are interested, please contact Stacy Huck, 481-2990,

for more information.

FAITH FORMATION REGISTRATION

Registration for Faith Formation Classes, grades 1 through

6, will be held outside the vestibule of the church.

continuing through the weekend of September 1-2. Please

are registering your child for the first Communion Class,

or if your child is new to the program. Religious Education

classes are held at St. Patrick’s School every

Tuesday afternoon from 4:00 - 5:15. This year

classes are set to begin on Tuesday, September 4.

St. Patrick Catholic Preschool /Jr. High School

Registration is ongoing for the 2012-2013

Academic Year. We are accepting applications

for Preschool through Gr. 8. Call Gail Johnson @

click on Documents/Forms

The 6:00 pm Mass will be cancelled on Sunday,

August 19th for the Fiesta Latina.

Everyone is invited to the Fiesta so we hope you will plan on attending an earlier Mass that

day & then come join the fun. The Fiesta begins right after the 12:15 pm Mass and continues until 8:00 pm. There will be a Raffle, Music, Prizes, Mexican Food & much more…..

Sanctuary Remodel A few months ago we had a town-hall meeting to

discuss possibly relocating the Rising Christ statue

from the altar area to the vestibule and placing a

crucifix in its place. It became evident that the

participants were evenly split: half of those present

wanted to keep the statue in its present

location,

the other half wanted it moved. After prayerful

consideration it was determined that more

discernment is needed.

Thank you for your patience. Cristina Curzi

THE ASSUMPTIN OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Early in the celebration of this Marian

solemnity, when we hear the reading from the Book of Revelation, we can’t help but feel awe for the majesty of the universe. Our

Gospel lesson resonates with the words of freedom proclaimed in Mary’s Magnificat.

This Holy Day of obligation is a celebration of victory for her, for the saints, for the Church , for us all. Mary led a simple

but graced life, gave birth while homeless, lived part of her life as a refugee, and

watched her only Son die. How can she not be a symbol of faith, courage, grace, compassion, strength, and blessing for us all?

HOLY DAY— MASS TIMES

Does a higher GDP increase happiness? The Gallup World Poll shows that higher income, better

health, and trust in one's community contribute to high life

satisfaction while poverty, ill health, and deep divisions in the

community all contribute to low life satisfaction. But a higher

income does not guarantee more happiness; other things

matter more: community trust, mental and physical health,

and good governance. Policies that focus on increasing

economic growth may decrease happiness by contributing to

new crises of obesity, smoking, diabetes, depression, and

other ills of modern life. Better goals include high

employment and high-quality work, support of family life,

and a decent education for all. Perhaps the question for both

individuals and governments is, what will we do with all the

wealth we create? [Source: July-Aug. NewsNotes at http://
