AWAKENINGS

On Saturday, February 12, 2011, for the tenth year, I wasproud to assist many young students from Partners and FXW inthe Sacrament of Reconciliation. Adults will remember this asConfession. An eerie ritual if there ever was one, completewith red and green lights, closed doors, shades, and whispers.It has evolved, but the true Sacrament is to reconcile yourselfwith, and return to, God. When we adults think of any kind ofreconciliation, it is usually to find the mistakes we made in ourcheckbook, and identify the expenses that were unnecessary,and perhaps a little selfish. This is no different with God. Thegood we do is our income. The expenses that are necessaryamount to our living expenses. The selfishness and mistakesare entries that we either reconcile in a timely fashion, or paythe larger price later.

Of course, this explanation of basic accounting principles islost on children. They are just getting around to the concept ofright and wrong as it affects others. Usually it takes the formof not pleasing a parent, or doing something against the familynorm. Those are easy rules to follow and to figure out how therule was broken. The effect of our misdeeds on our neighbor isa concept the children are trying to grasp in our class.

To that end, on the first day of preparation for Reconciliation,the assignment is to identify someone you hate. Many kids“hate” someone at school. With kids, “hate” is a broad brushthat paints anyone they do not really know. Their mission then,is to “make friends” with that person. It is a tall order incourage, but it is an exercise we as parents should teach them.Break down the borders of hate by getting to understand ourneighbor and embrace the differences.

From that exercise, we speak of “the rules” as handed down inthe Ten Commandments. Kids can understand most of those,but we explain the Ten Commandments as hypotheticalexamples: You and several thousand of your friends arebuilding a city in the middle of the desert. Things are gettingout of control because everyone is just doing what they want todo. What rules would you make? The first rule the studentsidentify every time is “do not steal,” then “do not kill.” Funnyhow they never come up with “honor your mother and father!”When I brought this up one year, one of my more precociousstudents simply said “Well, Duh!” From there, we distill theCommandments to Love One Another and “the golden rule” oftreating others the way you want to be treated.

We then examine the Jewish concept of Reconciliation calledT'shuvah (ti-SHOO-vah) which means, Repent and Return.

We read “Gershon's Monster” that tells about a man who justsweeps his misdeeds into the cellar every week before theSabbath. Once a year on Rosh Hashana, he casts them into thesea, a ceremony called Tashlik (TAHJ-leek). The legend ofTashlik is if you throw crumbs that symbolize your sins into thewater, the birds and fish will take them away as God'sforgiveness. But Gershon's sins are not so easily forgivenbecause he has not followed the path to forgiveness, whichtypically follows this pattern:

1) Admit you are wrong;

2) Feel remorse;

3) Resolve to change;

4) Right the wrong;

5) Apologize and ask forgiveness;

6) Repair the damage.

We all recognize this pattern. Many of us ask God's forgivenessfor our failings in a general context. We never identify what weconsider to be the misdeed. Further, how many of us resolve tochange and take steps to right the wrong? Finally, what are wedoing to repair the damage? Hail Marys and Our Fathers alonedon't cut it as penance. As youngsters, we used to rip thoseprayers off in short order and do nothing else. We need to dosomething proactive to make it up to those we hurt. Now, thatis hard work.

This year, as we approach Lent, identify how you missed themark, apologize and ask forgiveness. Resolve to change thatbehavior and take steps to make things right. Then add to thecircle. Give of yourself. That's Penance.

Thank you to Father Tom Hurley who compiled a baseball teamof priests to handle all the children. Special thanks to BeaCunningham, who always lets us add our own creativity to theeducation of your children. Finally, thank you to thecommunity of Old St. Patrick's where I have truly found God's work.

COMMUNITY FAITH FORMATION

One of my favorite parts of the “job” at Old St. Pat’s is standing in front of the Church on aSunday morning. Though it may not seem likemuch, I believe deeply in being present to you,the people of Old St. Pat’s, as you come forthfrom worship and enter the excitement andchallenge of your worlds, wherever life takesyou. Though our encounters may be brief, I appreciate very much even the small chance ofconnecting with someone I do not know but yetthey have blessed this Church with theirpresence. I have coined the act of being outside

on Sunday’s as “Des Plaines Street Ministry.” In a Church like ours,where members come from all over the city, suburbs, and northwestIndiana, trying to connect with you before you hit the byways andhighways is really important.

Last week, I had another one of those great moments of meeting notonly someone I did not know, but more importantly someone who was atOld St. Pat’s for the first time. Regretfully, I have forgotten the person’sname, but I was totally humbled by their gracious feedback and thepositive experience this person had at Old St. Pat’s on a Sundaymorning. But what thrilled me most of all after meeting this “firsttimer” on Des Plaines Street was what he told me when I asked himhow he found his way here: a friend invited me. That may not seemlike much, but I think invitation is so key not only to our success, butmost importantly to what the mission of Jesus is all about.

It begins with an act of invitation. Jesus was about inviting hisfollowers, his disciples, and the culture of his time to think in new ways.In keeping with the continuation of The Sermon on the Mount fromMatthew’s Gospel that we consider again today, Jesus invited andchallenged his friends to consider new ways of living life. Imagine,according to Jesus, if you considered yourself Blessed and Salt andLight in the midst of a world that may not think much of you! Imagineif we actually went the extra mile, turned cheeks, offered cloaks, andeven loved our enemies?! Jesus was about an invitation to live life differently.

I hope that what we are always about at Old St. Pat’s is Invitation.I hope and pray we always will find ourselves not only as the Invited Ones but also as the ones doing the inviting to our friends and to the strangers looking for ways to live life differently in the spiritof the Gospel. The life of Church is so different today in the 21stcentury. We are treading some new waters with respect to Church life.The Gospel message of Jesus is that we can always search for new waysto make it better, exciting, relevant, and more meaningful for us and forthe world. We have to! Instead of “the invitation is always there”(which it is) and just wait for the guests to arrive, our greater challenge today is that we must be more animated and direct in our act of invitation.

In addition to the Sunday experience of Liturgy, there’s a lot going on at Old St. Pat’s. Keep inviting so we can keep our Church alive and strong.

See you on Des Plaines Street! Have a great week!

SHARING THE MISSION

Second Collection – 2011 Annual Catholic AppealSunday, February 20The Annual Catholic Appeal in support of the work of the Archdiocese willtake place on Sunday, February 20, 2011. This is the one time during theyear all Catholics are asked to make a pledge, payable in installments tothe Archdiocese so that it can meet the spiritual, educational and temporalneeds of parishes, schools, and the people throughout our Archdiocese.

The theme of the 2011 Annual Catholic Appeal is “…seek first thekingdom of God…” (Matthew 6:33). Jesus taught that we are not to worryabout the things of this world. Rather, we are to seek the kingdom of Godand the Father will reward us. God provides all that we have and all thatwe are. Stewardship, in part, is the recognition of God’s gifts and theobligation to return a significant portion of our gifts to assist in his work.Our gifts to our parish, to our Archdiocese and the Church throughout theworld are given in gratitude for what God has given us. A gift to theAnnual Catholic Appeal helps to provide education, services, and ministryto thousands within and outside of our Archdiocese.

The Appeal supports parish ministries that provide religious education tochildren, youth and adults in economically disadvantaged communities. Itis also one of the largest philanthropic sources of financial support forCatholic schools in the Archdiocese.

If you have received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it andbring it to Mass next Sunday, February 20, or you can mail it back to OldSt. Pat’s. For those who did not receive a mailing, envelopes will be in thepews for your convenience .

Edward Foley, Capuchin is the Duns Scotus Professor of Spirituality and Professor of Liturgy and Music at the Catholic TheologicalUnion in Chicago. With 19 books to his credit, he is currently serving as general editor for a scholarly commentary on the new Order ofMass to be published by the Liturgical Press. We at Old St. Patrick’s Church are delighted Fr. Foley is a regular guest presider andpreacher at our Sunday Liturgies.

During the course of the coming year, you will hear more about the Church’s Liturgy, commonly known to us as the Sunday Mass. Whatyou will be hearing, if you have not heard already, is that the Church has made some pretty significant alterations to the language andwords of the English translation to the Mass. While the “rites” will stay the same, the words we say at Mass are going to change,beginning with Advent, 2011. There are many questions being raised as to why and what does this all mean for us as a Catholiccommunity. Well, one of the many blessings we have at Old St. Pat’s is found in the person of Fr. Edward Foley, who is a professor ofliturgical theology at Catholic Theological Union in Hyde Park. Besides being a former teacher of mine, Ed is a weekend presider at Old St. Pat’s and one of the best preachers in town and has agreed to host a three-part series of presentations related to the new Mass. I am most grateful to Ed for offering this informative and relevant series at Old St. Pat’s. Please join us!

Operating Revenue and Expenses • July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010It is our pleasure to share with you the financial report from this past fiscal year. If you review theCrossroads Bulletin with any regularity, you know this faith community is committed to creatinggreat Church! Not just good, but great Church demands we host programs and ministries thatreally move the spirit within each of us, while ultimately calling us to go out into the world andserve others. It is one thing to say this is who Old St. Patrick’s Church is; it is another thing to liveit out! Hosting great Church in the heart of a major metropolis is not inexpensive.

Although the operating revenues this fiscal year turned out to be lighter than originally forecasted,the staff and leadership at Old St. Patrick’s Church were able to similarly hold expenses to a levelwhich allowed us to still finish the year with a modest reserve.

We hope you share this passion and will continue to co-host one of the best urban expressions ofa dynamic Catholic Church experience in 2011!

Capital Revenue & Expense • July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010

On the other hand, capital revenue exceeded expectations this past fiscal year which allows Old St. Pat’s the opportunity to break ground thisspring for a new Church elevator and Phase I of the courtyard renovation.

When Old St. Patrick’s Church was restored in the mid 1990’s, a personal lift was added to the Church to assist those individuals who had difficulty navigating the stairs. At first this appeared to be an ample solution; however, over time and increased usage, it hasbeen proven that the personal lift is no longer sufficient to meet theneeds of this community, nor its guests. The Old St. Pat’s communityseeks to install a commercial elevator that will more appropriatelymeet the needs of all those individuals who wish to worship andcelebrate in the Church, as well as the Hall where countless programs and events are hosted.

Meanwhile, the courtyard, adjacent to the oldest public building in thecity of Chicago, has great potential to be an oasis in the city. Theprospect of a place for peace, reflection and prayer, while also being apractical space for a variety of gatherings such as receptions, concertsand liturgies are the things of dreams. Thanks to several major giftswhich have been committed and received to date, Old St. Pat’s is in afiscal position to enhance the sacredness of the campus creating notonly a place, but an experience of welcome for the many seekers andsearchers who find their way into the city.

Fr. Tom Hurley looks forward to sharing a more detailed plan with youin the coming weeks, and invites your participation in this most excitingendeavor. In the meantime, if you have any questions regarding thefinancial report for FY2010, please contact Kate Rhodes, Director ofAdvancement at 312-798-2338, or [email protected].

Violence in our neighborhoods and homes is everyone’s issue —so what is a faith-filled response? How can we cultivate hope andbuild a more peaceful future together?

Some years ago, Fr. Bruce Wellems, Pastor of the combined HolyCross/Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in the Back of the Yards

Neighborhood, took a group of at-risk inner-city Chicago youth, ages 14 - 17, for a hike high in the Colorado Rockies. At the end ofthe five day trek through some very difficult wilderness, heinterviewed each of the youth, asking them, “What is your dream?”One of the youth, Jaime, said matter-of-factly, “I don’t have adream.” Fr. Bruce responded, “Everyone has to have a dream.” And he replied, “My dream is to have a dream.”

As the realities of violence continue to plague our city, youth such as Jaime grow up in the midst of communities and families whohave experienced generations of domestic and neighborhoodviolence. Hope and the ability to dream of a better life are squeezedout of them and given little opportunity to even begin to grow and berealized. Today, through the intervention and support of a parish andneighborhood community working together, Jaime is now dreamingof college and is safely learning and growing through the Boys Town program in Omaha, Nebraska.

Fr. Bruce will focus on how his parish community has discovered,through reflection and networking, some of the root causes ofneighborhood violence, and how they have found effective ways torespond and to make peace possible every day for hundreds of youthand families. Fr. Bruce Wellems is a Claretian Missionary, ordainedin 1986. He has been serving as Pastor since 1999, and is also theExecutive Director of Boys Town Chicago, founded in 2007. Fr. Wellems helped create a Public Alternative High School and thePeace and Education Coalition to accompany youth who dropped outof high school and were at-risk of violence. He graduated fromCatholic Theological Union with his M.Div. degree in 1984, andreceived a D.Min. from St. Mary of the Lake University in 1993.

February 25Feast Day of BlessedSebastian of Aparicio (1502 - 1600)

Sebastian was born in Spain into a peasant family.He was deeply religious and changed employmentseveral times before the age of 30 to avoid thetemptations opened to him. At the age of 31, hesailed to Mexico where he settled in the town ofPuebla de los Angeles and began working in thefields. However, he noticed a business opportunitythere. Puebla was an important crossroads and henoted the goods transported were carried on thebacks of pack animals or, more disturbingly, on the overloaded backs of the native people. At first, Sebastian made and sold wheeled cartsfor the transport of goods. He then expanded intothe improvement and building of roads and bridgesto improve the transport for goods, agriculturaltrading and the people of the community. He was responsible for building a 466-mile road from Mexico City to Zacatecas that took 10 yearsto build, but was of enormous benefit to the local economy.By the age of 50, Sebastian was a wealthy man.He lived very simply and gave his earnings toothers, he bought food for the poor, made loans henever reclaimed to poor farmers too proud toaccept charity, he paid the dowries for poor bridesand gave free training to Indians in skills thatwould assist them in earning a living. In addition,people brought him their problems, as he had areputation for his wisdom. Sebastian’s generosityand charity to all earned him the nickname “Angel of Mexico.” At 70 years of age, he decided to give everythinghe had to the poor, and became a lay Franciscanbrother. His job was to go out and beg for food forhis fellow brothers and for the poor in their care.This formerly rich man loved his job and was lovedby his fellow Franciscans, the townspeople andthe poor the brothers helped. Sebastian ofAparicio was beatified in 1787 and is known as apatron of travelers. His remains were never buriedbut, at the request of the local people, exposed ina prominent place for veneration. Several hundredclaims of miracles attributed to his intercessionwere made even before his death and such claimscontinue to this day.Adapted from the “Saint of the Day” Web sitehttp://www.americancatholic.org/.
