Did You Know?

In Jesus’ time, many Jews despised Samaritans so much that they would avoid passing through Samaritan territory by going around or across the Jordan River.

Jesus believed that Samaritans should be accepted as equal to Jews, He bridged the gap of hatred between the Jews and the Samaritans by passing through their towns when he traveled. He also used Samaritans as an example of love when he spoke to the Samaritan women and in the parable of the Good Samaritan.

As if to tell us, the person you hate the most is your neighbor and is deserving of your love and kindness.

“You shall love the Lord, your God, will all your heart, and with all your being...and your neighbor as yourself.”

Luke 10:25-37

From the Desk of Father David

Adam’s Grave The Holy Land includes many holy places, but none so venerable as the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. This favorite place of pilgrimage marks the traditional location of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and of his tomb, the place we call Calvary, (Golgotha in Aramaic, meaning “place of the skull).” It was called that in tradition because of the ancient legend that Christ was crucified on the very spot in which Adam. the first man, was buried, so that the blood of Jesus would pour down its redemptive stream upon humankind’s first guilty head. The skull and crossbones that appear occasionally at the foot of crucifixes or in paintings of the crucifixion (which were popular in the early Church) are a remnant of this legend. Whatever there is to this, Golgotha is a fitting name for this holy hill on which death occurred and the second Adam’s obedience culminated.
