The Eucharist is given to us as a challenge and a promise. That’s how Jesus presents it in today’s Gospel.
He doesn’t make it easy for those who hear Him. They are repulsed and offended at His words. Even when they begin to quarrel, He insists on describing the eating and drinking of His flesh and blood in starkly literal terms.
Four times in today’s reading, Jesus uses a Greek word—trogein—that refers to a crude kind of eating, almost a gnawing or chewing (see John 6:54, 56, 57, 58).
He is testing their faith in His Word, as today’s First Reading describes God testing Israel in the desert.
The heavenly manna was not given to satisfy the Israelites’ hunger, as Moses explains. It was given to show them that man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.
In today’s Psalm, too, we see a connection between God’s Word and the bread of life. We sing of God filling us with “finest wheat” and proclaiming his Word to the world. In Jesus, “the living Father” has given us His Word come down from heaven, made flesh for the life of the world.
Yet as the Israelites grumbled in the desert, many in today’s Gospel cannot accept that Word. Even many of Jesus’ own followers abandon Him after this discourse (see John 6:66). But His words are Spirit and life, the words of eternal life (see John 6:63, 67).
In the Eucharist we are made one flesh with Christ. We have His life in us and have our life because of Him. This is what Paul means in today’s Epistle when He calls the Eucharist a “participation” in Christ’s body and blood. We become in this sacrament partakers of the divine nature (see 1 Peter 2:4).
This is the mystery of the faith that Jesus asks us to believe. And He gives us His promise: that by sharing in His flesh and blood that was raised from the dead, we too will be raised up on the last day.

REFLECTION ON TODAY'S LITURGY
Bishop Folda has made some changes to the directives to parishes in response to the
COVID-19 pandemic. Following is a summary of the updated policies. Additionally, they may
be found at: https://www.fargodiocese.org/documents/2020/6/BishopStatementCOVID6-12-20.pdf
Insofar as health officials of the State of North Dakota have changed the risk for transmission of COVID-19 to
low on May 29, it is now possible to reduce the restrictiveness of some of the directives that came into effect
on May 4.
• All parishes must be offering public Masses. There are to be no exceptions to this rule without consulting
the bishop.
• Communion may be given on the tongue. If contact with the tongue or mouth of the communicant occurs,
the minister of communion must sanitize hands before distributing to the next person. It may be helpful to
keep a small table with a corporal, ablution cup, and hand sanitizer close by so that sanitizing may be less
obtrusive, and reverence for the Eucharist maintained.
• Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion may be used, but only insofar as necessary. With smaller
numbers attending Mass, and since communion is not distributed from the chalice, in most places their
service will not yet be necessary.
• Masks are still highly recommended as a measure to protect others, but they may not be required. •
Missalettes, or books with readings in them, may at the discretion of the pastor, be returned to the pews.
• Congregational singing and choir singing is still to be avoided, and hymnals should not be returned to the
pews.
• Social gatherings may be held outside of Mass, but state health recommendations for social distancing
should be maintained.
• It is appropriate to encourage the faithful who are not at higher risk from COVID-19 to return to Mass, even
though the dispensation from the Sunday obligation still remains in effect.
• Based on local conditions, Pastors are given discretion to admit additional persons into the church for Mass.
Social distancing should still be practiced insofar as possible.
• Instructions on Confirmation, sent from the Liturgy Office on 5/29/2020 indicated there was doubt whether
an instrument (cotton ball, or swab) could be validly used for the anointing of Confirmation. The Congregation
for Divine Worship has responded that "The use by the minister of an instrument (gloves, cotton swab...),
does not affect the validity of the Sacrament." This is not to suggest that you must use an instrument at this
time, but to indicate that the doubt has been clarified and should the need arise, you may use an instrument
for the anointing in Confirmation.
