THE ST. PAUL DAILY GLOBE. WEDNESDAY MORXING, NOVEMBER 12. 1884, s SOUTHERN MINNESOTA. Gleanings of News and Items of Ma- terial Interest A Dally Globe Department at Mankato De- voted to Developing and Advancing the Southern Portion of the State The office of the Southern Minnesota depart cent of Toe Gr.onK -is In charge of Mr. E. F. Barrett, with headquarters at Mjtnkato, the Dusiness and editorial rooms being on the second Boor of the First national bank building formerly upk-d an the telephone exchange. Personal calls or communication addressed to Mr. Barrett in matters pertaining to ibis department will receive prompt attention. E pedal Reports from the Glob* Mankato office November 11 Slanlcato I Jolt. A splendid chrysanthemum adorns the window )f P. K. Wiser* jewelry store, completely jovered with the rich white blossoms. Married, Tuesday Nov. 11, 1884, Herman Balmes to Mine Francis Lamm. The event was tolemnized at the German Catholic church. Man- 1 KUtO. - I . One hundred pair of "Neely's" patent adjust- I able iron bottom roller skates for sale by Carl Dire, Mcagher olock.foot of Walnut street, Man- kato. Edward Machcl, barber, has started a new shop next door to Wagon's old meat market on Front street. Mr. Machel is a graduate from the shop of Mr. Thorns. Some one brought a stray rooster found tied up in a sack on the street, into the police station Monday and yesterday the whole force were electrified by hearing the knowing bird crow when some one hurrahed for Cleveland. R. T. Bell, of C. W. Taylor's jewelry store, and R. F. Billings, the druggist, accomplished the rather laborious feat of a trip^.o St. Peter and return, yesterday, upon their bicycles, a dis- tance of thirteen miles from here. They went down In three, hoars but returned In two, which is much , better time than pedestrians make. S. S. Eaton, of* St. Paul, TisitfJ this city on Monday and adjusted the loss of CrF. Hollmau, of West Mankato, who lout a blacksmith chop by fire recently. The amount of insurance was $250, in the Springfield, of Massachusetts, and as the walls were uninjured, the loss was satis- factorily settled at $150. Messrs. Lamm & Schroeder have just pet up a mnmoth Stewart coal base burner heater In the First National bank. It is pretty sure from Its looks to posses enough heating capacity to keep that institution comfortable shonld the temperature reach even so low as ten degrees below the coming winter as it sometimes does here. A number more of these splendid stores have also en sold about the city. Hon. E. P. Freeman, of the Redwood Falls land office, and W. P. Toony, of this city, made a curious election agreement which, in view of the almost universal tendency to bet on elections now-a*days, Is very sensible. Mr. Freeman, if a Democratic president wes elected, wax to carry a torch in a Democratic procession, while Mr. Toony \vna to carry a torch with the Blalne crowd if he was elected. Mr. Freeman is here waiting for the Democratic procession, elaborate prepara- tions for which are being made. Robert Davidson, who lives at the corner of Main and Second street*, raised quite a ruction Monday evening about 11 o'clock, and his poor wire, with a year and a half old child in her arms, rushed into the street shouting murder! police : etc , dressed in her night clothes. Davidson was at once taken Into custody and lies in tbe cage awaiting examination for the assault upon hi* wife, who says he tried to or threatened to kill his child, heing armed with 11 carpenter's ham- mer. Ills case will be attended to to-day. The lack of enterprise and reliability on the part of tne Pioneer Fret* is well illustrated by its published returns from this congrecflonal dis- trict. For a week both Blame aud Wdtefield have been credited with 1,000 majority in Blue Earth and with 2,000 . majority In Faribauit county. Both made their official canvass some- time ago, and in Blue Earth Wskeflcld's major- ity over Thornton is only 429, and In Faribault 77», a total of 1.208, or 1,792 less than the sleepy old organ accredits to him. Correct your returns and Wuketield's boasted 10,000 majority will bo reduced nearly 2,000 in two counties. At- this rite the remaining eighteen counties ought to cut it down further, if not entirely wipe it out. The statement by the Pioneer Press to the effect that the Hon. J. T. Williams was nomi- nated '-by some Republican" is net quite the fact, and the correction to "the unanimens nom- inee of the Republican county convention is desired by a prominent Republican of this city. Mr. Williams received 2,275 votes at the recent election, which seems to indicate that the major- ty of the people of this county deem the office 'of senator from this district vacant. The same state of affairs which exists here, viz: A state senator fulfilling the duties of some other office, exists in Watouwan county, where the Hon. Geo. Knudson, state senator, discharges the'duties of county auditor; and in Yellow Medicine county, where Senator Blake's legitimate right to the office is sustained. In Watonwan county Hon. W. K. Holms has been elect- d state senator to ' succeed Senator Knudson, while Hon. Thomas McMillan has been elected in Yellow Medicine county to succeed Senator Blake. AlMe (Harrington. The announcement made several days since through the coining of the Globe, that the Abbie Carrington Grand Opera company had been en- gaged for an - appearance at the Opera house, Mankato, has been verified, and upon yesterday the managers, Messrs. George and Ed. Andrews issued their cards of in- - vitation * ' for the \ grand entertainment which is to transpire on Tuesday evening. Nov. 20. The company is an able one and' besides the distinguished prlma donna comprises some interesting talent such as render it one of the finest companies which ever sing to the great cities of the northwest. The taking in of \u25a0 Mankato Into their northwestern circuit by such a company as this means more of the same sort and we can be well pleased with the accomplish- ment. Those who desire favorable location in the house should secure their tickets early. Ar- rangements have been made with all tbe rail- roads leading into Mankato for reduced rates and large delegations are expected from adjoin- leg town. For al^ application for tickets or other information apply to Andrews Bros., Man- kato. Below will be found the programme for the evening. PROGRAMME PART I. - - Duet, "Belesarlo," Donizetti ! Slg. . One hundred pair of "Neely's" patent adjust- Iable iron bottom roller skates for sale by CarlDire, Mcagher olock.foot of Walnut street, Man-kato.

Edward Machcl, barber, has started a newshop next door to Wagon's old meat market onFront street. Mr. Machel is a graduate fromthe shop of Mr. Thorns. •

Some one brought a stray rooster found tiedup in a sack on the street, into the police stationMonday and yesterday the whole force wereelectrified by hearing the knowing bird crowwhen some one hurrahed for Cleveland.

R. T. Bell, ofC. W. Taylor's jewelry store, and R. F. Billings, the druggist, accomplishedthe rather laborious feat of a trip^.o St. Peterand return, yesterday, upon their bicycles, a dis-tance of thirteen miles from here. They wentdown In three, hoars but returned In two, which is much , better time than pedestriansmake.

S. S. Eaton, of* St. Paul, TisitfJ this city onMonday and adjusted the loss of CrF. Hollmau,ofWest Mankato, who lout a blacksmith chopby fire recently. The amount of insurance was$250, in the Springfield, of Massachusetts, andas the walls were uninjured, the loss was satis-factorily settled at $150.

Messrs. Lamm & Schroeder have just pet up amnmoth Stewart coal base burner heater In theFirst National bank. It is pretty sure from Itslooks to posses enough heating capacity tokeep that institution comfortable shonld thetemperature reach even so low as ten degreesbelow the coming winter as it sometimes doeshere. A number more of these splendid storeshave also en sold about the city.

Hon. E. P. Freeman, of the Redwood Fallsland office, and W. P. Toony, of this city, made acurious election agreement which, in view of thealmost universal tendency to bet on electionsnow-a*days, Is very sensible. Mr. Freeman, ifaDemocratic president wes elected, wax to carry atorch in a Democratic procession, while Mr.Toony \vna to carry a torch with the Blalne crowdif he was elected. Mr. Freeman is here waitingfor the Democratic procession, elaborate prepara-tions for which are being made.

Robert Davidson, who lives at the corner ofMain and Second street*, raised quite a ructionMonday evening about 11 o'clock, and his poorwire, with a year and a half old child in her arms, rushed into the street shouting murder! police :etc , dressed in her night clothes. Davidson wasat once taken Into custody and lies in tbe cageawaiting examination for the assault upon hi*wife, who says he tried to or threatened to killhis child, heing armed with 11 carpenter's ham-mer. Illscase will be attended to to-day.

The lack of enterprise and reliability on thepart of tne Pioneer Fret* is well illustrated byits published returns from this congrecflonal dis-trict. For a week both Blame aud Wdtefieldhave been credited with 1,000 majority in BlueEarth and with 2,000 . majority In Faribauitcounty. Both made their official canvass some-time ago, and in Blue Earth Wskeflcld's major-ityover Thornton is only 429, and In Faribault77», a total of 1.208, or 1,792 less than the sleepyold organ accredits to him. Correct your returnsand Wuketield's boasted 10,000 majority will boreduced nearly 2,000 in two counties. At- thisrite the remaining eighteen counties ought tocut it down further, if not entirely wipe it out.

The statement by the Pioneer Press to theeffect that the Hon. J. T. Williams was nomi-nated '-by some Republican" is net quite thefact, and the correction to "the unanimens nom-inee of the Republican county convention isdesired by a prominent Republican of this city.Mr. Williams received 2,275 votes at the recentelection, which seems to indicate that the major-ty of the people of this county deem the office

'of senator from this district vacant. The samestate of affairs which exists here, viz: A statesenator fulfillingthe duties of some other office, exists in Watouwan county, where the Hon. Geo.Knudson, state senator, discharges the'duties ofcounty auditor; and in Yellow Medicine county, where Senator Blake's legitimate right to theoffice is sustained. In Watonwan county Hon.W. K. Holms has been elect- d state senator to

' succeed Senator Knudson, while Hon. ThomasMcMillan has been elected in Yellow Medicinecounty to succeed Senator Blake.

The announcement made several days sincethrough the coining of the Globe, that the AbbieCarrington Grand Opera company had been en-gaged for an - appearance at the Opera house,Mankato, has been verified, and upon yesterdaythe managers, Messrs. George and Ed.Andrews issued their cards of in-

- vitation * ' for the \ grand entertainmentwhich is to transpire on Tuesday evening. Nov.20. The company is an able one and' besidesthe distinguished prlma donna comprises someinteresting talent such as render it one of thefinest companies which ever sing to thegreat cities of the northwest.
