News & Notes from Sondra Norder, President Inside this issue: After a historic 2016 with the opening of the new St. Paul Manor and Hoffman Memory Care Resource Center, 2017 is here and already going by quickly, and we are up for the challenges and excited for the opportunities that are ahead! This year, we will be engaged in a lot of planning and legwork as we really get into the strategic plan that developed for 2016-18. To shed some light on where we are headed, let me share our five strategic directions: St. Paul Elder Services will be the employer of choice for individuals with a passion for service to others and a desire for professional engagement. With a continuous focus on our mission, vision, and values, we will seek to attract and retain talented professionals by promoting healthy work/life balance and scheduling flexibility, promoting adaptability and innovation in the workplace, offering personal and professional advancement, enrichment, and learning opportunities, providing highly competitive compensation packages, and cultivating a culture of appreciation through associate recognition and engagement programs. St. Paul Elder Services will be the provider of mission-driven centers of excellence in memory care, post-acute care, palliative care, and mental health. Building upon existing programming and high quality outcomes, we will: further develop Passages into the premier portfolio of cutting-edge supportive services and residential care settings for those living with all stages of dementia and their care partners; refine our skilled nursing and rehabilitation capabilities within our Center of Rehabilitation, such that we are recognized as the area’s clear leader in care transition management; establish a palliative care program that ensures patients receive the best end of life care possible, with a distinctive emphasis on pain management, spiritual care, therapeutic music, and collaborative conversations reflecting realistic expectations; and create a positive mental health support service exclusively for the elderly that will focus on creative interventions for improving the health and wellness of those living with depression and/or anxiety. After a historic 2016 with the opening of the new St. To shed some light on where we are headed, let me share our five strategic directions:

St.

St. Paul Elder Services will lead in the development and provision of innovative, sustainable home- and community-based programs to serve individuals, and support their families and care partners, in their preferred residence.

In response to community need, industry trend, and consumer preference, we will Continued on page

MISSION STATEMENT

We are a Catholic, Franciscan

sponsored community dedicated

to enriching the life experience.

VALUES STATEMENT

Our mission and ministry flow

from the gospel values of dignity,

compassion, respect, hospitality

and stewardship.

VISION STATEMENT

We will continue to provide

excellent care and innovative

services through the efforts

of dedicated professionals,

volunteers, and contributors.

work to create a program for all-inclusive care, including a center for healthy aging, for the area’s frail and elderly who are living in their own homes or residential settings; this program’s core focus will be on care management throughout the continuum, as well as the assessment, service provision, and wrap-around care and treatment that will allow for this clientele to remain living safely in the community.

St. Paul Elder Services will transition our brand to reflect the breadth of our services and promote strong, positive community recognition.

To ensure that we are able to fully share our wide range of resources with others in need in the community, we will design a consistent and deliberate marketing and community relations plan and adopt a philosophy of community involvement and presence throughout all entities and layers of the organization, with a goal of being recognized as the thought leader in caring for the frail and elderly.

St. Paul Elder Services will pursue collaboration with like-minded organizations to provide comprehensive services in the changing health care environment.

As a means of solidifying our leadership position in the area’s health care community, we will pursue both joint ventures and informal partnerships with other senior service providers to offer comprehensive care options in home- and community-based settings and will further share knowledge and data with such providers to foster the advancement of the post-acute care and senior living sectors. We will likewise partner and seek to share risk with hospitals, health systems, and physician groups in the exploration of new care and payment models and the improvement of care transitions.

My vision for 2017 is to execute as much of our strategic plan as possible and set ourselves up for executing the rest in the third year of the plan, 2018, which will be here before we know it! Thank you for your continued support as we continue to work hard to make St. Paul Elder Services better and more accessible for all those we serve and employ.

Sondra Norder, President & CEO

Annual Appeal Thank You

The 2016 Annual Appeal was a tremendous success; it was our second highest total amount raised in the history of the Annual Appeal! It is so apparent that you, our generous contributors, believe in our mission, to enrich the life experiences of those we serve. And with your support this year, we have now surpassed our Care Assurance Endowment Fund goal of $1.3 million dollars.

Now that we have hit that goal, we will be able to do more, serve more, reach more. More fairly healthy folks who want to remain independent in their own homes, but have no means to pay for supportive services. More persons living with dementia whose quality of life could improve if they could afford adult day services. More of the sick and vulnerable who need residential care, but have nowhere else to turn. And we are so excited about our ability to carry out the healing ministry of Jesus Christ such ever expanding ways. It would not be possible though without your support and generosity. God Bless all who donated during the 2016 Annual Appeal and throughout the remainder of the year. Together, we are fulfilling our mission!

Tree Lighting Ceremony

A special thank you to the Holy Spirit Catholic School Choir for singing at our Tree Lighting Ceremony!

Farewell, Kitty Peeters and Evie Hartwig

In December, we honored Kitty Peeters and Evie Hartwig, as they finished out their third and final terms on the SPES Board of Directors. We are deeply grateful for their service.

Kitty was first appointed to fill the unexpired term of her husband John, who passed away after serving on our Board for several years. Since then, she has been an effective member on the Board, providing steadfast support to the organization. Through her understanding of the local community, she consistently represented these perspectives well. Her connections and work experience with the school district gave her great insight to the issues we faced. She has been an active member of the Community Advisory Board, giving her time and energy to grow our community programs exponentially over the years. A pillar of the community, we have been blessed by Kitty’s involvement and influence.

Evie has been an inspiration to us all over the past nine years. Fighting and surviving cancer had to be her priority for a while, and she did that with absolute grace, always remaining positive and hopeful and focused on her future. Many prayers were answered when she came through on the other side and returned to lending her keen business sense and deep devotion to God to our Board deliberations. Evie is a truly generous philanthropist as well, and the number of lives she has touched through her charitable giving is countless. We are so grateful for the contributions she has made to growing and improving our organization.

On behalf of the staff, residents, and volunteers of St. Paul Elder Services, its entire Board of Directors, and the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, we thank Kitty and Evie for their service to and belief in our mission and ask God’s blessings upon them and their families!

We always thank God for you…

For we remember how you put

your faith into practice, how

your love made you work so

hard and how your hope in

our Lord Jesus is firm.”

Welcome to St. Paul Elder Services!

Welcome, Lance Goetzman, Kelli Clussman, and Trevor Frank

We are pleased to share that we have three new members of our Board of Directors. Lance Goetzman is a retired business executive whose mother and father have both been residents at St. Paul Elder Services, and he has served on our Finance Committee for many years. Kelli Clussman is the Executive Director of the Heart of the Valley Chamber of Commerce, and is eager to give back to the community in a Board capacity. Trevor Frank is an architect with a firm in Appleton, and is a Kaukauna native who has contributed significantly to the many positive changes happening in this community over the past few years, including leading the Kaukauna Public Library project. We are thrilled to have Lance, Kelli, and Trevor joining us!

Welcome, Krystal Schneider, RN, MSN

We are pleased to welcome Ms. Krystal Schneider as our new Director of Nursing for St. Paul Home. Krystal comes to us from an emergency department setting, but is eager to put her excellent clinical skills to work here in the skilled nursing setting. She has a Masters Degree in Nursing and has served as adjunct faculty at UW-Oshkosh in the nursing program for several years. She will also have a great opportunity here to put her education experience to work as we continue to mentor and grow our nursing staff into the best clinicians they can be. Krystal lives in Kaukauna with her husband and children and is involved in a number of community organizations. She can be reached by email at [email protected] or by phone at (920) 766-6020 ext. 273. Welcome Krystal!

Lent is a holy time for us all. We are called to reflect on the Passion and Death of Jesus. We have “Stations of the Cross” during Lent on Fridays at 3:00pm. Come, pray with us! We meditate and pray for all the suffering in our world and ask the Lord to wrap us with His love and care. We are not

alone, our God chooses to be with us. He is a God-with-us!

God bless you on this very holy time of year!
