GOSPEL REFLECTION

Throughout Jewish history it was traditional for Jews to demonstrate repentance through washing ceremonies. John the Baptist was preaching repentance for the coming of God's reign. His baptism may have been related to the purifying washings of the Essenes at Qumran near the

was God's anointed one. John answered that his baptism was only a preparation for "one mightier" who would

baptize with "the Holy Spirit and fire" (v 16). Although Jesus had no need of repentance, he entered the murky waters where the people had been baptized, thereby uniting himself with sinful humanity. The baptism of Jesus was another "epiphany," or manifestation of the divine presence. While Jesus was praying, the Spirit descended upon him, and God's voice was heard confirming Jesus as the "beloved Son" (v.22). On Calvary, Jesus would undergo a baptism of fire that would bring salvation to the whole world (Lk 12:49-50). This transforming fire would be poured out on the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

PARISH MINISTRY “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10

LIFE’S LITTLE INSTRUCTION BOOK

The book of Zechariah is considered a composite work written over several centuries. Today’s text is thought to have been written in the fifth century B.C. Writing to a nation that has returned from exile and rebuilt its Temple, the prophet focuses on future promise rather than current political structures. Using language from earlier prophets he speaks of the “Day of the Lord” when God will right all

wrongs. God “will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of mercy and supplication” (v10). Jerusalem will be renewed. This shift in focus helped develop the expectation of a messiah who would renew God’s people. Writing to the Galatians Paul reminds us that “through faith” we have become “children of God in Christ Jesus” (3:26). Through this union we have become “Abraham’s descendant(s), heirs according to the promise.” (v.29). There is no need for distinctions of race, gender or class for we are “one in Christ” (v.28). This breaks down all barriers and unites us in Christ as one family. God’s Son has made us children of God. Peter’s “confession” concerning Jesus’ identity is immediately followed by the first passion prediction. This is meant to clarify the meaning of messiah. It shows us that for Jesus, being messiah (God’s “anointed one”) means suffering and death along with future glory. The crowds see in Jesus “John the Baptist…Elijah (or)…’One of the ancient prophets’” (9:19) but their understanding is inadequate. Peter, speaking on behalf of the disciples, declares Jesus to be “the Messiah of God” (v.20). This is an improvement but it is still inadequate and so Jesus clarifies it with the prediction of passion death and resurrection. To follow Jesus we must first “lose” our life before we “save it” (v.24). For Reflection: Does my life contribute to bringing about the “Day of the Lord” by righting the wrongs I see around me? Am I willing to “take up my cross” daily to follow Jesus?

CATHOLIC HUMOR

A father was at the beach with his children when the four-year-old son ran up to him, grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore where a seagull lay dead in the sand. “Daddy, what happened to him?” the son asked. “He died and went to Heaven,” the Dad replied. The boy thought for a moment and then said, “Did God throw him back down?”

IS NOW OPEN

MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR:

“The Lord is the strength of his people, a saving refuge for the one he has anointed. Save your people, Lord, and bless your heritage, and govern them forever.” Psalm 27, 8-9 We were all in shock to hear about the devastating shooting in an Orlando nightclub where 50 people died and scores more were injured. Violence of this magnitude belongs to no religious, racial or ethnic group.

As St. Paul said to the Galatians in today’s Second Reading, we are all children of God in Christ Jesus. “Through faith you are all children of God in Christ Jesus. For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourself with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:26-29

We, St. Paul’s Community, feel enormous sympathy for the victims, their families, their friends, and all those that love them. We can take this opportunity to ask God to use us to help those who suffer and bring change where it is needed. Let us simply do what we do best. Pray. Pray for God’s peace, mercy, compassion, tolerance, forgiveness, and His presence in Orlando. Not just think or talk about doing so.

May the Lord give you His peace and blessings always, Father Leonardo Jaramillo, Ph.D., Pastor
